Battleship spoilers? Nov. 7, 2009

WARNING: As the headline implies, there are potential and substantial spoilers below.

When we first heard that Universal was making a movie based on the classic game BATTLESHIP, it led to some head-scratching.

How did they figure out a way to transform random guesses and the insertion of plastic pegs into a compelling and family-friendly movie about naval combat?

What was it that lured filmmaker Peter Berg (THE KINGDOM, THE RUNDOWN, HANCOCK), and made the studio confident enough to slot it for July 1st, 2011?

The project was initially described as "a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle." But who would they be fighting?

According to Latino Review (and corroborated by CHUD), the answer to these questions is... aliens. Yes, the floating forces will apparently be pointing their cannons at some kind of water-based extraterrestrials. I guess that explains a lot... just not with any sort of obvious logic, unless these are something like evil ABYSS beings.

Either way, a couple of candidates have already thrown their hats into the ring for consideration:

Extra Tidbit: I still don't understand why this premise needs to be based on a board game.

...is the only board game that needs a movie adaption. It would be about a group of cavemen trying to survive attacks by a dinosaur. They end up drugging him, and break for it when the dino is dizzy dizzy.

This just doesn't seem like a good idea at all! Hollywood is getting desperate! The video was funny though.

"I still don't understand why this premise needs to be based on a board game."

To sell lots and lots of copies of the board-game when the film is eventually released, I should imagine?

Yeah it kind of doesn't make any sense because the game is about fighting other ships. Not aliens, not you sank my alien.

who will be fought in movies when robots and aliens are offended? hell, i even heard that the wind got a bit pissy for being depicted in such a negative light in "the happening".
