WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

Cheer
up, you're #1, you scrooge!

Despite many of our readers admitting to not
being particularly impressed with Robert Zemeckis' "mo-cap
animation" style (see the results of our recent poll HERE),
the film still managed to snag the #1 spot, despite 3 other new
movies being released at the same time. The studio is hoping that
A CHRISTMAS CAROL continues to pull in the bucks through the
Thanksgiving holidays and in anticipation of that whole
"Christmas season" thing...kinda like Zemeckis' POLAR
EXPRESS did a few years ago.
JoBlo.com actually had a nice weekend of our own,
as we were quoted in respect to 2 new films that opened this
weekend. Firstly, the Milla Jovovich thriller, THE FOURTH KIND,
which managed a decent 4th place launch with about $13M (check out
Mike Sampson's quote for the film HERE),
as well as THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS, for which we got a nice
quote on their TV SPOT, which I didn't even know about, until I
saw it running during the hockey game on Saturday night (check out
that TV spot HERE).
THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS managed about $13M of its own, along
with a 3rd place finish.
The only new film that didn't open particularly
well was Richard Kelly's THE BOX starring Cameron Diaz (has her
time passed?), which managed only $8M and a 6th place finish.
Surprisingly, the biggest story of the weekend was for a movie
that didn't even finish in the top 10. The film is called PRECIOUS
(based on a book) and despite only opening in 18 theaters, it
managed to make $1.8M, which is a stupendous average of $100,000
per theater!! In comparison, the #1 movie of the week only managed
a $8,000 average and opened in 3,600 theaters. I get the feeling
that PRECIOUS will go wider sometime very soon. Seems whatever
Oprah touches, goes gold (check out a make-up-less Mariah
Carey from the film HERE).
In the meantime, Michael Jackson's concert film
held on pretty strong in 2nd place, adding another $14M to its
bank account, while closing in on the $60M mark domestically (the
film has grossed an additional $130M around the rest of the
world). Both COUPLES RETREAT and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY are close to
crossing the impressive $100M mark although the former cost $70M
to make, while PARANORMAL only cost about $15,000. Nice profit
margin. The 4 films to drop out of the top 10 this week included 4
disappointments in AMELIA ($11M), CIRQUE DU FREAK ($13M), THE
STEPFATHER ($27M) and SAW VI ($26M), the last of which may
finally slow that franchise down a tad.
Next weekend sees the release of the latest Roland
Emmerich "destruction of the world movie" entitled 2012
(previous entries include INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA and THE DAY
AFTER TOMORROW), as well as a limited release of PIRATE
RADIO, from the writer of FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, LOVE
ACTUALLY, NOTTING HILL and BRIDGET JONES' DIARY, amongst others.
