Newman in the final BUTCH CASSIDY scene

While we're still wondering if news of Travolta wanting to play Butch Cassidy will be just a bad dream, Spain's Arcadia Motion Pictures is gearing up their own story on the famed outlaw, and they had an inspired casting choice for him.

BLACKTHORNE to be directed by ABRES LOS OJOS scribe Mateo Gil will follow a Sundance-less Cassidy around 1910, after he survived the shoot-out with the Bolivian army, and looking for one final score in America to secure his retirement. The man himself will be played by the great Sam Shepard, with Stephen Rea playing a man hunter who wants to prove the bank robber is still alive.

The independent film, with a $7.5M budget, will be in production this coming March in Bolivia and Spain. Anybody feel Shepard can't cut it? Let's hear your thoughts!

Just watched the original the other day
I hadn't seen it since I was a kid. Needless to say this won't touch the first one. Even though Sam Shepard is awesome, I don't think he'll elevate this to some unknown next level.

No thank you. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid is perfect enough as it is, without the lame sequels and remakes.

I like Sam Shepard, but I don't think he has much in common with Paul Newman.
Harrison Ford might've been a more interesting choice. James Caan or Robert Duvall

Logic says they died. However, you can choose to believe that they jumped and landed into the water then made it to safety.
This film sounds interesting. The whole Travolta and Cruise thing was a freakin awful idea though.

Of course he survived. 150 soilders could only hope to kill Robert Redford, but Paul Newman? No sir... takes Tom Hanks to do that.
