This was probably inevitable, but it's pretty significant nonetheless. It's official, NEW MOON has now sold more pre-release tickets than any film in Fandango's ten year history. Here's how the new ranking order breaks down:

1. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)

2. Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith (2005)

3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

4. The Dark Knight (2008)

5. Twilight (2008)

If you’re like me, you may have now started fearing that NEW MOON might actually have a shot at upsetting other, more meaningful box office records due to the fact that every teenage girl in the country is likely going to see it at least five times this weekend. However, if you look at the numbers for the other films on that list, the opening weekend totals have rather large swings to them.

Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith (2005) - $108.4M

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) - $77.8M

The Dark Knight (2008) - $158.4M

Twilight (2008) - $69.6M

So yes, I’m guessing that with all it's hype (which is significantly more than the original TWILIGHT had), NEW MOON will end up breaking $100M its opening weekend, but I don’’t think we need to be worried about it getting close to THE DARK KNIGHT. It’s a phenomenon to be sure, but in no way posseses the mass appeal of Batman and the legendary hype that surrounded Health Ledger’s (almost) final performance.

But either way, expect big numbers from the vegan vampires, whether you like it or not.

Twilight wasn't that bad...
I'm married with 2 kids, so my wife forced me to watch the Blu-Ray of it, and it was not the worst film I've ever seen, but I won't watch it twice. But the second doesn't look too bad, there looks like there is action.

They interviewed some of the "Twihards" that have been camping in line since Thursday. The reported asked if they were crazy to which they responded "no more like enthusiastic"....sorry no...you are insane. Apparently on top of that the first four in line had also travelled to Italy in order to see it being filmed.

I mean, yeah Twilight is lame, but come on.... You people bashing on it, just because it is not your cup of tea doesn't mean it sucks. It may suck to you, but to teenage girls it's freaking awesome. Hey D-rex we do, thats who says it. Because they grow up and think that movie represent good acting, writing, directing, storytelling and that is where people find their inspiration and now they will find theirs in utter crap. Also they will end up thinking the Godfather is boring and sucks. We need to educate people not smart enough so they can discern hype from actual quality.

Thank you for the totally sexist remark from the peanut gallery....Thank god we live in a country when it is 100% my business if I want to see good, bad, or other....I love that I am stereo-typed by virtue of genetics....Yeah, I'm typical in that I like a good rom-com but I love seeing shit blown up as much as any of you testosterone-laden men...Possession of a certain combination of cromosomes...

I wonder if Twilight had turned out to be a pretty decent flick (which is obviously not the case), if it'd still get all that hate just because the target audience is made of teenage girls.

I agree with antickpix about the box-office when he says that pretty much every record is powered by some group or the other. And Im no Twilight apologist either.

I saw this article yesterday and we gotta endure an entire week (and then some) of all the broads fiending for this movie. Then again, I would say that it's almost fair that us dudes couldn't stop talking about Modern Warfare 2... but fuck it, they're not the same.
