Four for Ga'hoole

Four awesome male actors are lending their voices to Zack Snyder's animated film, GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE.

Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham are bringing their wonderful accents into a movie about owls. Okay, there's more to it than that. The story is about an owl named Soren, who is captivated by his Dad's epic stories about a mythic group of warriors with wings called the GUARDIANS OF GA'HOOLE. The guardians fought valiantly to save all owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. Of course, this will be in 3D.

The film is in production in Sydney and already has a massive cast: Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten, Helen Mirren and Jim Sturgess. I like the idea of a movie about owls, especially with everyone that's involved. It's pretty cool seeing Ryan Kwanten in something else besides TRUE BLOOD, even if it's just his voice. The guy is great on the show as Sookie's brother, Jason Stackhouse.

This is the first animated movie Snyder is directing. He was executive producer and screenplay writer for TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER. GA'HOOLE is set to be released in Australia on December 9, 2010.

Extra Tidbit: Unrelated but still animated, DAVID THE GNOME should have been a movie.

This sounds awesome. Snyder has great visual taste and I can't help but recall imagery from The Secret of NIMH: The Great Owl! Given Snyder's penchant for film-geekery, hopefully this will be more like the talking animal movies NIMH, Watership Down, Rescuers, some Pixar, etc., and less like Over The Hedge, Open Season, Space Monkeys (or whatever the fuck else hollywood comes up with)

Bummer...
Watchmen may as well be considered an animated feature. I was hoping Ga'hoole would get picked up, but not with Zack Snyder and certainly not 3D.

That's a great voice cast. This is one I'm keeping an eye on when it hits. Snyder has a great visual style so it's going to be really neat to see him go into animation.

Man, I haven't heard David the Gnome mentioned in over a decade. Great idea for a movie!

David the Gnome should still be a movie. No past tense.

It's past tense because the series was canceled, and not very likely that it will ever see the light of day. It's more or less a dead project. If anyone makes a David the Gnome movie, I'll take back what I said.

Just finished watching True Blood season 1. It's fantastic! Ryan Kwanten is one of the highlights of the show. It's like if they made Twilight good, and for the enjoyment of actual audiences.

Sam Neill is one of the great New Zealander actors to go mainstream-ish. He's also unsurprisingly well suited to do voice work. Remember his Simpsons appearance? Molloy the Cat burglar is on...
