Warhammer book art

I remember watching my fellow geeks play Warhammer 40K years ago and thinking it would make for a kick-ass sci-fi/action film, and that I should play it too. I never did, but the movie is finally about to happen.

Rookie director Martyn Pick has been given directorial duties for ULTRAMARINES, based on the table-top game and many subsequent books and whatnots. Screenplay is already being banged out by Dan Abnett, known in the industry for his work with Marvel and DC as well as having written a number of 40K books already, so the dude knows that stuff.

The original 40K table-top game had super-charged Space Marines and the Human Imperial Guard try to save mankind of the 41st Millennium against hordes of alien forces. The film, planned to be live-action mixed with boatloads of CG, is brought forth by Codex Pictures whom I'm pretty sure I almost never entirely heard of. No matter, just the idea of such a movie rocks. Right?

Thanks to the Quiet Earth bunch for the heads-up.

Extra Tidbit: It'll probably give us an idea of what STARSHIP TROOPERS would've looked like if it had featured the book's power suits.

I have very high hopes and not so high expectations for this project. Its certainly possible to create the most brilliant, disturbingly sinister, dark, gritty and gruesome sci-fi movie on this awesome universe.

If this movie is not NC-17 rated, its a clear message to all the fans: This is a dimmed down borderline silly portrayal of the 40K universe, brace yourself for disappointment. There isnīt much non NC-17 action going on in this universe, except maybe some hover skull interaction, noble banquets and astropath deliberations.

Its great that Abnett is on board, but I cant help being worried about the executives, slicing off everything relevant to the core of 40K, to make it more family oriented. The best news IMHO,is that its a rookie director working with London based Codex, who have a huge challenge in the shader and texture department alone (as so little in this universe has shine and specularity), never mind visualizing the warp! We need a fresh and gritty take on this, for them not to create another polished monster for the forgettable ranks. Some of the mindset, talent and work ethic, of the Alien production could be beneficial to a project with this sort of character.

Abnett helped completely rebuild Marvel's Cosmic titles, I am sure this will be good.

The Arrow
I could easily see The Arrow casted as a lead role. He just fits this type of movie.

Black Templar's and Grey Knights are clearly the best chapters in the Imperium.

Yeah i've heard that of the armor from the book that they look a lot like the Marine armor from 40K.

I will be cool if they get a couple of the races in but i'm sure it will jsut be a Marines vs Chaos story like it's been in pretty much every video game adaption of this universe.

Down with the False Emperor!

It needs to be R. If its not R...it is shit. Never played any tabletop games. Closest I got is the Dawn of War PC game which was kick ass. Just by playing that I know this film needs to be ultra crazy go nuts violent.

Its Hollywood. If they want to make something PG-13 they will do it. Damn the consequences!

It will have to be R, there's no possible way to do it otherwise, imo anyways. It's a rather bloody universe.
