It's been a quiet couple of years since we heard that animator Genndy Tartakovsky's unique and insane 'toon SAMURAI JACK was coming to theaters from indie studio Frederator Films.

The property is apparently still slicing its way forward, and according to a blog post at Frederator, it has JACK fan JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot company on board as co-producers, and is set up at Paramount.

Alas, the movie's progress is reportedly "glacial", and the script for the "2D/stereoscopic 3D production" is still being written by Tartakovsky himself.

The former Cartoon Network series followed a future-flung swordsman battling the armies of demon lord Aku (RIP Mako). The pop-culture packed samurai tale referenced everything from Kurosawa to 'Lone Wolf and Cub' to Frank Miller's 300 to STAR WARS (which Tartakovsky already captured with his CLONE WARS series).

Source: Frederator

Extra Tidbit: Jack was voiced by former MadTV comic (and PULP FICTION gunshot accident) Phil LaMarr.

Samurai Jack
Genndy Tartakovsky's said in the commentary on the final season, that he didn't want to end the show on a 20 minute episode, but wanted a full movie to do it. Me being a die hard samurai jack fan, this is fantastic news. Considering Genndy's work on the newer star wars movies was the best thing to come out of all that new Star Wars Stuff. Truly Great News. Also knowing that JJ Abrams, is a fan and and a artist as a director can spot a great show as this, only proves that this is one of the greatest Cartoons of all time.

just hope they improve on the dialogue sequences. dont get me wrong I loved this cartoon but 3-4 lines of words preceeded or followed by silence was a bit too much.

Tartatovsky is deeply involved in this project, so I doubt it will be a Dragonball fiasco. Yes, Mako is irreplacable, but fans deserve the ending to the story, and they can't leave Aku out of it, so they really don't have much of a choice.

Having watched many a Samurai Jack cartoon and loving every minute of it I can say that this will be an extremely difficult project to recreate as a live motion picture. Perhaps more in the 300 style it'd work better.

There's a visceral quality to the presentation of the show that's so important to what the show is. The long stints of silence, or just hearing Jack's steps in the snow. The sound effects and editing etc.

This could be extremely cool, or waste of celluloid such as Dragonball. Creators, you've gotta watch the shows to understand the shows!

I've been waiting for this for soooooo LONG!
though I do agree with Spraragen88 that it's going to be next to impossible to recast Aku...but i must know how the story ENDS! I hope the powers at be don't fuck this up :/

It makes me sad to think that Mako would ever be replaced, but I really do want to see a Samurai Jack film. This news makes me happy, especially since JJ Abrams is now involved.

No Mako! No Go!
They will never be able to replace Mako as Aku. I don't care who they hire, it will fail.

I was really looking forward to this film back then but after Mako's demise, I wish they would have lost interest.
