WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

New Moon rising!

We all knew that NEW MOON was going to be the #1 movie this weekend at the box-office but the question was just how much it would earn and what records it would break. Well the teen-powered vampire/werewolf saga brought in an estimated $140.7 million this weekend to make it the second best opening weekend in history (behind THE DARK KNIGHT, which brought in $158.4 million back in the summer of 2008). The movie also set records for the best midnight gross ever ($26.3 million) and the best first day gross (a total of $72.7 million on Friday).

So with all the frantic Twihards flooding the movie theaters this weekend, you might think that everyone else would stay home and not want to fight the crowds, but it was a surprisingly strong week. The Sandra Bullock drama THE BLIND SIDE surprised with a $34.5 million performance, the biggest ever opening for the actress (and this is after THE PROPOSAL opened to $33.7 million earlier this year). And while it sported a decent sized drop of 59% off last week's numbers, 2012 still did decent business in third place with $26.5 million.

While things were rosy for those films, it wasn't quite so nice for the animated film PLANET 51. It opened in fourth place to $12.6 million, less than half of what this year's other Sony animated release, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, was able to bring in earlier this fall.

The Lionsgate release PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE expanded slightly this weekend and was able to bring in another $11 million for a sixth place finish and a strong $21.4 million total in a mostly limited release up until this point.

Congratulations are in order for COUPLES RETREAT, which crossed the $100 million mark this week and still sits at the #8 place with a total so far of $105 million. LAW ABIDING CITIZEN, which closed out the Top 10, also has proved to be a solid hit for Overture with an additional $1.7 million bringing it to just over $70 million total.d

Next weekend sees the release of two big movies, NINJA ASSASSIN and the Robin Williams/John Travolta comedy OLD DOGS plus the Wes Anderson stop-motion animated film will finally expand into a full release. While none of those films will likely be able to unseat NEW MOON in the #1 spot, which one of those do you think will perform the best?VOTE HERE.

1. Twilight: New Moon $ 140 Million
NEW
2. The Blind Side $ 34.5 Million
NEW
3. 2012 $ 26.5 Million $ 108.2 Million
4. Planet 51 $ 12.6 Million
NEW
5. A Christmas Carol $ 12.2 Million $ 79.8 Million
6. Precious $ 11 Million $ 21.4 Million
7. Men Who Stare at Goats $ 2.8 Million $ 27.6 Million
8. Couples Retreat $ 1.9 Million $ 105 Million
9. The Fourth Kind $ 1.7 Million $ 23.3 Million
10. Law Abiding Citizen $ 1.6 Million $ 70 Million

New Moon could make more bank than Titanic for all I care...it'll never come close to the quality of films like The Dark Knight. And seriously, saying it's a fangirl's Star Wars? That's just insulting. I'm not a big Wars fan but that shit was GOOD! Twilight's just....*sigh*.....

At least there's still some justice in this world since The Dark Knight still holds the 3-day record. After seeing the first Twilight, I refused to waste anymore of my money on that crap. God help us next year when the 3rd one comes out...

People are quite mistaken when the Twilight bashers say only tween girls enjoy these movies. When I went to see it, I saw males and females, half split, from the ages between 2 months and 65 years old.

Twilight bashing is the new trend, clearly.

But I'd just like to put forth that, being among the minority of readers here that actually like the saga, the fans are not just the little teenage girls everyone loves to belittle. I work at a theater, and the crowd this weekend was extremely diverse. And I myself am a 21 year old female who started reading the books when I was 17 - I ...

People of all ages like this - that's how it made $140 million opening weekening. Tween girls don't make that all on their own.

Entertaining
I've read the books and enjoyed them and the movies are quite entertaining. Movies are an escape for people to take. Yes I realize that not everybody likes the same thing. The Twilight Saga is just another escape with a loyal fanbase. You don't have to like it but you don't have to bash on it either. Give it a chance. That's what I did last year and I ended up liking it.

Money Vs Seats
I don't care how much money a movie makes over another. It's always going to change and grow. What I am interested in is seat sales. I wish they were keeping track of tickets sold. How many people seen the movie.

Even if it drops 65 percent, that's still be about another 50 mil, and then coupled with whatever it makes during the week, it' will be well over 200 mil domestic after next weekend, and you know the twombies will have to see it multiple times, i hate to type it but it may cross 300 mil.

I'd rather see the film with the ridiculously long and unnecessary name instead of this claptrap.

Just FYI, New Moon actually experienced the third largest-grossing opening weekend (not second); Spider-Man 3 also has it beat.

Kind of lame, but it'll be really frontloaded and won't have the legs that The Dark Knight did. It'll never get anywhere near $1 bil and will probably taper off somewhere around $500 mil.

The highest grossing film so far this year is transformers 2, which was crap, easily the worst film I have seen all year. Like most people here, as a fan of transformers I was going to see it no matter what. It's popular, it makes a lot of money. Twilight is the same way, except for different genders (vampire boy instead of megan fox). As much as I hate to admit, there really isn't all that...

if garbage makes a lot of money it guarantees more garbage will be on the way.

When movies like Moon and The Hurt Locker get lost in the shuffle, that makes it harder to make thoughtful, powerful movies...

for those reasons alone you should care. And shame on anyone who paid for transformers 2, 2012, and the forthcoming Expendables.

No, it's made Hollywood realize that you are not only perfectly fine with mediocrity, you welcome it. If you're so passionate about movies then you should be demanding more quality material.

Sorry but hating bad movies doing well is fine in my book. The acting in these stories is terrible and so is the dialogue. JohnLocke is right, it is not women it is 10 to 20 year olds seeing this. The numbers will drop big time because parents will get sick of driving and giving their daughters money to see it.

By your flawed logic, if "supporting" those movies (that have been called some of the best of their decade) makes you a film snob, then good luck with your mindless crusade against the majority of the Schmoes (i.e. why are you even registered on this site?) or anyone with good film taste for that matter. It seems like you counter "the popular" because it's the fashionable thing to do.

Now THAT is worse than being a film snob. So dude: a plain and simple, STFU already.

Mark.. it's not that people are bothered by teenage girls and their love for movies, it's that a movie making money like this is a horrible sign to the rest of Hollywood. This means were gonna get a bunch more leading roles thrown to hot men/women over talented men/women. Why do you think we have so many unwanted shitty sequels of movies that made money? Everyone likes what they like and you can't change that fact...

It's just a bad sign to movie fans when flicks like this break box office records.

While I'm not a fan of the Twilight franchise, there are definitely aspects I appreciate. In particular, Kristen Stewart is a phenomenal actress. And again, if you disagree, go watch whatever overacted bug eyed performance the Academy tells you is supposed to be good and bask in whatever false superiority that gives you.

So, I'll definitely root for a series like this to do well at the box office because I have at least some affection for it.

Do you think if the next Batman movie breaks Twilight's opening day record, that the teenage girls will be on here complaining? No, because they have a genuine love for the movies whereas some of you people are more fans of your own fandom and the supposed status that gives you than the actual object that you are a fan of.

I say, let the teenage girls and other Twilight fans have their moment and stop with the judgmental attitude that they have inferior taste than you. Or be immature assholes. Your call.

It's nice to see you question the integrity of other Shmoes although you are going to cheer for a film franchise you admit you aren't even a fan of just out of spite. By the way Kristen Stewart may be good in other projects, but her performance in Twilight was horrible.

I also agree Mark. I am a fan of the Twilight Saga though but I agree with you 100%.

Lol, did some pitiful tween Twi-hard invite all of her fellow Twi-hard forum sisters over to this article to vote down every anti-Twilight post (which, happens to be every post - and for good reason)?

I'm not even going to refer to them as Twihards anymore, Twicks is more appropriate.

"Twilight:New Moon"-made $90 Mil more than I had expected it would! "2012" not too bad in earnings thus far(but $200 mil. approx. to make!)-"A Christmas Carol" holding it's own this past week, stronger than expected I would think. Planet 51 and its weak start = enough with the kiddie crowd anime/ CGI for awhile.

I am not Twilight fan, but what is with all this hate? A good box office is a good thing for everyone. don't like it, don't see it, but telling people to die and calling them "retards"? Good God, I didn't lose faith in humanity from people ENJOYING a movie and book. I lose faith for blind hatred. Like on here.

As bad as it is let's be thankful it wasn't worse. Think about it.. a lot of the crazy twilight fans saw this movie 2 or 3 times already, and it made over half of it's intake in ONE DAY, and 1/5 of it at midnight alone.

That means it'll have a huge drop off next week and an even bigger one the week after that.. this won't come close to beating TDK or Titanic in the long run.

Most the fans don't even have drivers licenses to see this movie again and most of them probably went with their parents to see it and their parents will not want to see it again so yeah, I definitely think this film will drop big. Titanic and Dark Knight banked big because both sexes enjoyed them. I was surprised how many women actually liked TDK. So I think you are making an accurate prediction.

Dammit is it worth working at a movie theatre...
...when a Twilight movie opens, only to make it to that part of an evening shift where the late shows come around, and instead of serving annoying tweens, you get a sea of broads as far as the eye can see.

That, and Ashley Greene seem to be the only good things to have come out of Twilight.

Old Dogs will take spot #2 next weekend, not saying that's a good thing. I...
