82nd Oscar nominations announced!

The Oscars were announced earlier this morning in Los Angeles by Anne Hathaway and Academy President Tom Sherak. As expected, AVATAR got a ton of kudos with 9 total nominations but in a pleasant surprise it was tied with THE HURT LOCKER which also had 9 noms. This was the first year that 10 nominees were announced for Best Picture allowing movies like DISTRICT 9, THE BLIND SIDE and UP to make their way into the top category. UP becomes the first animated film since BEAUTY AND THE BEAST to be nominated for Best Picture.

Of course, everyone wants to know surprises and snubs. Some obvious surprises include THE BLIND SIDE for Best Picture, which I know I didn't see coming. Sandra Bullock was an obvious choice for Best Actress but Best Picture? Maggie Gyllenhaal also snuck in a surprise Best Supporting Actress nomination for CRAZY HEART. Matt Damon was nominated for an acting trophy this year but sadly it wasn't for his best performance, which was in THE INFORMANT! Instead he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for INVICTUS.

As far as snubs, you'll see that STAR TREK didn't make the cut for Best Picture though I think it had more of an outside chance to be nominated anyway. The biggest snub I noticed was the absence of Melanie Laurent in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. I'm guessing she was bounced in favor of Maggie Gyllenhaal and how you could watch those two films and say that CRAZY HEART sported the Best Supporting Actress performance is beyond me. I also thought 500 DAYS OF SUMMER should've gotten a nomination for Best Editing and BRUNO should've gotten a Best Costume Design nod for its whacked out garb.

I'll step aside now and let you peruse the entire list yourself to decide what you like, what you love and what you hate. The Oscars, which will be hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, will be presented on March 7.

the only i don'T understand is how i lame movie like district 9 is able to get a best picture nomination and movie like Star Trek, Crazy Heart and 500 days of summer cannot. Most critics hate district 9 yet the academy decides to give it a best picture nomination. I guess it got the nomination based on the money it made.

avatar deserves every nomination. sure, the story may not be original. But this is simply James interpretation of a classic story. He deserves a nomination for best director as well because of the realism he brought and the technology HE created to make this. He changed the way he see movies and created an experience like no other. People who say AVATAR was overrated and it sucked obviously are...

sure Avatar was fun but why should it get all this oscar attention when something like The Dark Knight was a much better movie but got nothing. Sure James Cameron makes fun stuff but that doesnt mean the entire movie industry should be his bitch

I am not entirely impressed by the list, but I am somewhat surprised Blindside is on the Best Picture category. I just hope Sherlock Holmes receives best original score. Hans Zimmer did a fantastic job on it.

Sharlto Copley was the best performance of the year bar none. Snub. Bigelow for director and Waltz for supporting actor.

I hope that at least Hurt Locker or District 9 take best picture. They both did something new in their respective genres and deserve it.

Nominations for score are pretty lame, none of them really blew me away...Avatar was particularly mediocre. ...

james cameron does not deserve that nomination for that movie and that movie does not deserve a nomination. They mine as well have given one to final destination in 3D. And if sandra bullock wins obviously it shows that the bar has been lowered for acting. As long as you have a fake southern accent and some powerful lines about family you are a good actor despite the piles of shit you take part...

I was on the Box Office Mojo page and realised.

In the Oscar ceremonies from 1978 to 2008 (31 editions), the lowest-grossing best picture winner is The Last Emperor with... 44 M$.

To this day, The Hurt Locker has grossed 12.6M$

As much as I'd love it to win, it seems unlikely.

Mike, I would like to disagree with you. I found Damon's "Informant" performance to be flat and forced, much like the movie in general.

Overall, I enjoy this list, but as always, some things on there suck (anything for "Precious") and some snubs suck ("Moon", "HP6")

I get it! You loved the special effects, but there's a category for that. Best Pics need to have good scripts last time I checked...

Trek would have been much more deserving. It had special effects AND a script.

Ain't no heart in Avatar's uncanny valley.

And this Trek was so good partially because it saved a lifeless franchise. I'm no Trekkie, just a fan of this year's Trek.

And I did mispeak. Avatar is the 2ND least deserving nom ever. Blind Side is a much worse choice.

To bad Avatar had SOOO much more going on for it than special effects.

Avatar had something Star Trek did not, it had heart. And as history has proven, it takes heart for a blockbuster film to achieve the phenomenal success Avatar has.

That's because best picture is reserved for the non-popular, pretentious films that are really only loved by the few movie snobs. Those people who like to keep their idea of a great movie separate from that of the mainstream so they can keep their idyllic sense of superiority.

No matter how much people loved AVATAR and no matter how much it should be praised for its success, it does NOT deserve even a mention for Best Picture. Or Screenplay. That just stole the nom from someone more deserving.

Someone more deserving? There are ten nominations; there's going to be filler coming out the wazoo. Even when there is normally 5 or so nominations there are stinkers on the lists.

And "UP" is nominated for essentially the same thing twice.

no love for 2012 ?
best visual effects listed above didnt show 2012, i would have thought that would be a strong contender for sure, while admittedly cheesy in parts, dialogue wise, i dont think anyone who saw it in theatres was less than blown away by the awesome visual f/x, they were really something on the big screen.

I'm pretty excited about this...loving the fact that District 9 and Up are in the running for Best Picture...and I LOVE Inglorious Basterds. I may be the only one but I'm also digging the fact that Half Blood Prince got a nom for Best Cinematography. I think if The Blind Side can get a Best Picture nom, then Harry Potter most definitely should have. Maybe that's just me!

I can't believe Clint Mansell's score for Moon wasn't nominated. Half of the reason that flick was so effective was because of the music.

If James Horner gets an award for recycling Willow, Glory and the rest of his score for Avatar, I'm gonna punch my wife in the throat.

Well I say only Up, Inglourious Basterds and District 9 deserve to win Best Picture but Star Trek was my favorite movie of the year.

Totally agree. Apparently one Academy member was so stuck on what to put for his top 10, he put Drag Me to Hell. It'd would've been great to see it show up over The Blind Side.

I know I'll get a lot of hate for this, but I'm glad The Messenger for screenplay over 500 Days of Summer. I just didn't think it was that well-written, but apparently a lot of people are upset over that. Then again, I'll take 500 Days of Summer in Best Picture over The Blind Side anyday. I agree with both your mention of Roth and Waltz... Spot on... I disagree however about Pitts performance... He was more there for comic relief, and I think he provided it perfectly. I'd like to hear your thoughts on Laurent... Personally I think her and Waltz gave the movie the edge it needed to be a nominee.

I must strongly disagree. Brad Pitt and Eli Roth were the worst things about "Inglourous Basterds" (next to the hideous, non-existent ending).

Christoph Waltz completely owns that movie.

Actually, Moon was in contention. Sony just didn't back it. Which is unfortunate cause I feel like Sam Rockwell will never get the recognition he deserves. Ok, Hurt Locker will win best picture because for all the prettiness that was Avatar, only Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver held up. Inglorious Basterds, for all its sheer awesomeness, will probably win for one of the cinematography awards. Christopher Waltz will win for best supporting actor and I honestly don't care about anything else.

Funny how Avatar gets all those nominations and it wasn't even the best Science Fiction movie of the year let alone anywhere close to being Best Picture material. The only category for it to win would be Best Visual Effects which it would rightly deserve.

District 9
I'm glad to see that District 9 got some love. I had heard the rumors that it would get nominated for best picture, but I still didn't think the Academy would do it with a stretched 10. Congrats to the every man! It will obviously not win, but for once I think I will care about the films nominated and discussed.

Some noms no one saw coming :

Blind Side for Best Pic
Loin De Panama for Best Song ?!
The Secret of Kells for Best Animated film ?!!!!

Also nice to note that Tarantino hit a home run with 8 nominations with an even split between technical and non-technical (film,director,supporting actor,screenplay) noms ! Way to go.

I hope the Academy ...

Only the third woman to ever get the Best Director nod and for a really damn awesome movie, not some sympathy vote. I wanna see her win just so she can get up on stage and hopefully talk smack about her ex-husband, Cameron. ("See! You can win without a shite load of CGI!")

2009 was a great year in movies. Ten nominations for Best Picture is crazy! I'd like to see Hurt Locker beat out Avatar for best picture. Also, the Oscars are to be televised on March 7th not February 22nd.

I feel like Where the Wild Things Are should have at least gotten a nod for costumes/makeup and original song/score.

It's also more deserving of a Best Pic nod than Avatar, District 9, and Blind Side at least from a storytelling perspective.

Wow, I haven't seen Oscar noms with lots of "market" movie in a big big while and that's a good thing! Nominate movies that people enjoy. For Best Director, let Miss Bigelow win. Cameron had his share of Oscar. Just let her win - it's due time. Jeff Bridges too. The Dude is awesome and his recent roles have been really great. This is one Oscar that I'm really looking for.

I really hope Jeff Bridges wins...but I am surprised to see that Michael Stuhlbarg didn't get a Best Actor nod for A Serious Man.

Still very happy!
Despite a few bad calls, I think this will be the best Oscars ceremony in years based on the nominees. A great year for sci-fi!

The nominations were ok. I feel bad for Star Trek, since the only thing they will probably win is best makeup. I just hope The Hurt Locker or District 9 wins best picture over the obvious other choices.

Overall.....very happy.
Yeah, MOON didn't get nominated but you can't win them all. It wouldn't have won anything either way and the studio was too cheap to help it out.

"The Blind Side" sucks ass but it won't win Best Picture so it doesn't matter.

I'm still very happy with the other categories and "District 9" getting a "Best Picture" nod is amazing.

I am not happy reading about the nominations. (500) Days of Summer should be in the Best Picture category and Star Trek should be a best picture instead of Avatar and Sam Rockwell GOT ROBBED of another oscar nomination. I would have easily thought (500) Days of Summer would have been nominated for Best Picture.
