Here's a project we've heard practically nothing about so far. Ralph Fiennes is shooting a modern day remake of William Shakespeare's CORIOLANUS, and for his directorial debut, he’s recruited Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox to star alongside him.

The original play follows an exiled general's march on Rome, and as you can see from these photos from the set, Fiennes has thrust the film into present day, though how exactly the story conforms to the original remains to be seen. I can't really imagine a general serving in Iraq marching on Washington DC. I am kind of getting a Colonel Kurtz APOCALYPSE NOW kind of vibe though, which I like.

Most of these shots are of Fiennes or Butler, who looks more badass than he has recently, though I don’t think he’ll ever be 300 ripped again.

Extra Tidbit: Modern historians believe Coriolanus is more of a Roman tall tale than actual historical fact.

Finally. I was starting to think that "300 Butler" had been ubducted by aliens and replaced by "RomCom Butler"

Coriolanus marches on Rome with a Right Said Fred clone army? You don't see that every day.

I can't WAIT to see this. Ralph Fiennes is one hell of a badass, and this latest juxtaposition of an old Shakespeare play to a modern setting - this time, with the whole wartime setting and look and everything - just looks really, really awesome.

Not what you think.
It's not uncommon to place Shakespeare productions on the stage in time and place settings that aren't particularly accurate to the original text. But, that does NOT mean they get "transported" to any particular place or situation (like Luhrman's ROMEO+JULIET); in other words Fiennes doesn't have to place this production in Iraq, Afghanistan, or anywhere other than Italy. They're just in...

"I can't really imagine a general serving in Iraq marching on Washington DC." That could make an interesting movie.
