It may have taken a while but Tom Cruise finally got the man he wanted for the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 villain. Today it was announced that Philip Seymour Hoffman has joined the cast, which includes Michelle Monaghan and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, as the film's main villain. Hoffman was Cruise's top choice for the baddie in the previous Joe Carnahan version of the film that was to have starred Carrie-Anne Moss and Scarlett Johansson but because of scheduling reasons, they were unable to work out a deal. Instead, Cruise and Carnahan went with Kenneth Branagh to play the nemesis of IMF's Ethan Hunt. But then, as you all know by now, Carnahan left the film, Cruise went on to film WAR OF THE WORLDS and Hoffman became available as the production was delayed. M:I3 would mark a reunion of sorts for Cruise and Hoffman who worked together briefly on Paul Thomas Anderson's MAGNOLIA. As previously announced the film was given the official greenlight yesterday with filming set to begin on July 18th. Paramount CEO Brad Grey said in a statement, "We're thrilled to be
embarking on this exciting third MISSION with the amazing talents of Tom
Cruise, J. J. Abrams, and the whole M:I 3 team. Hoffman can be seen next as Truman Capote in the upcoming film CAPOTE.
