New Serenity poster
Update 2 - I swapped the poster with a slightly revised one.
Update - A reader just pointed out that the hottie is, in fact, Summer Glau, who plays River Tam.
Reader Andrew was cool enough to send us a link to this fabulous new poster for Joss Whedon's upcoming sci fi extravaganza SERENITY. As my SERENITY knowledge is painfully limited, I can only assume that the hottie in the poster is Morena Baccarin, who plays Inara Serra in the flick. I also want to mention that reader Jeffrey was cool enough to send quite the comprehensive email updating us on things we've missed regarding the marketing campaign for SERENITY. The email was considerably longer but here's an edited excerpt of what he said:
To give you a sense of its *very* unorthodox (but so far successful) marketing plan, in early May, Joss and Universal held special advance preview screenings of an unfinished cut of the film in 10 select US cities; they all sold out within 1 day. Three weeks later, 'Versal held another round of pre-screenings, this time in 20 US cities (the original 10 plus 10 new cities); these sold out within 6 hours. Finally, a 3rd (and likely final, at least in North America) round of pre-screenings were held on 23 June, Joss' birthday, in 35 cities, including 2 in Canada, Vancouver and Toronto; this round sold out in less than 4 hours.
I should also mention this: each round of preview screenings sold out before the official announcements were made. At each round of screenings, select cities were treated to special appearances by various cast members, Joss himself, the executive producer, even the visual FX supervisor (an Emmy winner for his work on Firefly). I was lucky enough to see the 23 June preview screening here in Vancouver, local castmember Jewel Staite - "Kaylee" - was there and for about 45-50 minutes after the screening she stood onstage answering fans' questions (including 2 of mine!).
The film as screened was incomplete, full of temporary placeholder music in the absence of a completed score, some unfinished special FX and more work to be done with color timing and correction (he also mentioned that the completed film was screened at Comic Con). In addition to the preview screenings, Dark Horse Comics is releasing a special 3-issue Serenity comic book, to bridge the gap between the end of the television series and the new film. Issue #1 was released 2 weeks ago, on 13 July, Issue #2 is due early next month and the final issue comes out in September. Also, the USA's Sci-Fi Channel is now airing all 15 episodes of Firefly, beginning last Friday night.
Hopefully everyone is now sufficiently up-to-date on the most important events in the SERENITY universe. It opens September 30th.
