As mentioned in our earlier X-MEN 3 teaser trailer story, our man Thomas Leupp was lucky enough to take part in a set visit to the film, and was able to catch the teaser before any of us movie nerds. Tom was good enough to send us his thoughts and description of the trailer though. Check it out below!

Hey folks. Got a nice little treat at the end of the X-Men 3 set visit in Vancouver . After shooting a scene with Ian McKellan (the details of which I am not yet at liberty to provide), Hugh Jackman walked over to us excitedly and asked if we (me and the other genre journalists that were on hand) had seen the teaser trailer. (We hadn’t, of course; it premieres on Apple.com on December 5th). The folks at Fox graciously agreed to allow us a special “sneak peak,” and Hugh (still clad in his Wolverine outfit) led us over to a mini screening room set up in a nearby trailer.

The trailer begins with Patrick Stewart narrating: “Since the dawn of existence, there have always been moments when the course of history shifted. Such a turning point is upon us now.”

Cut to Magneto addressing a group of mutants (flanked by Juggernaut, among others): “They wish to cure us. But I say WE are the cure.” The group cheers.

Stewart’s narration continues: “The conflict between the better and worse angels of our very nature. The outcome will change our world so greatly, there will be no going back. I do not know if victory is possible. I only know that great sacrifice will be required. And because the fate of many will depend on a few, we must make a last stand.”

Being a teaser trailer, it’s shot in a very quick-cut, fast-paced format. Here are some of the visuals I could make out:

  • Shots of all the new characters, including Angel, Beast and (very briefly) Juggernaut and Kitty Pryde.

  • Shots of Halle lookin’ hot with silver hair.

  • Shots of a frustrated, angry Cyclops.

  • A saddened Wolverine holding what appear to be Cyclops’ glasses.

  • Jean Grey smashing through a door psionically.

  • Angel spreading his wings in what appear to be a laboratory.

  • Shots of a funeral attended by several morose X-Men. (Couldn’t see Cyclops or Xavier in the shot. Hmmmmm…)

  • Lots of explosions, cars flipping over, etc.

My thoughts? Looks like the franchise is in safe hands with Brett Ratner. Hugh Jackman was certainly excited about it. Oh – and my gut tells me (and this is STRICTLY my opinion) that Cyclops is the one who gets killed off.

Questions? Comments? Manifestos? Send them to me at thomasleupp@joblo.com.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't kill off Cyclops, it would divert so much from the comics that Ratner would be a marked man from the fans. Much more likely that the funeral is for Jean Grey (possibly a memorial as I doubt they would have found her body)

Goddammit, they better not kill off Cyclops. That plus the decision to not include Gambit would pretty much ruin the experience for me. Well, okay, "ruin" is kind of a harsh word to use. But I'd be pretty f*ckin' pissed off!

Wow
It's not really hard to believe people are getting behind the buffoon known as Brett Ratner.

More comedy and action, less story? Sounds exactly what modern audiences like these days. I can't wait to skip this in theaters.

Hmm... there was a story arc in the X-men comic a while back in which Cyclops 'died' in the effort to stop Apocalypse. Perhaps if the scoopers suspicion that Cyclops is getting knocked off, that could mean they could lead into a fourth film with Apocalypse as the villain.

awesome i cannot wait to see this trailer on monday, it would make sense that cyclops would die due to the fact that he went to shoot Superman and stay with Bryan Singer rather than stay and act during the entire shooting of X3
