Aronofsky on GTA?

So with THE WRESTLER making the rounds and ROBOCOP still in early development, could Darren Aronofsky be playing with GRAND THEFT AUTO? Well if you mean literally playing "Grand Theft Auto IV" on his Xbox 360, then yeah. If you mean directing a GRAND THEFT AUTO movie, then probably not. But just that a director as heady as Aronofsky is into GTA is pretty cool to hear. The director, as part of the New York Times' 2008 "Moments That Mattered" retrospective, Aronofsky chose to wax poetic on GTA IV:

Looking over Niko’s shoulder up at the virtual parachute jump in Grand Theft Auto IV’s version of Coney Island, grabbing a dollar hot dog off the boardwalk to get my health back, then leaping into a bullet-hole-riddled Hummer and smashing through my childhood neighborhood, flying over sand dunes on Manhattan Beach and finally drowning in the sea off Brighton Beach. Thinking, Man, I wish they made this game when I was a teenager.

Seriously! I think that all the time! Although it's probably a good thing they didn't because I almost flunked out of school playing "Mega Man." The thought of playing GTA on a huge flat screen just makes my teenage self get weak in the knees. You can head here to read more "Moments That Mattered" including "SNL's" Andy Samberg who asks, "How long till I can get a decent robot?"

Source: NY Times

Extra Tidbit: I have a sinking feeling that we'll never see Aronofsky's ROBOCOP.

just say no to videogame movies
Isn't a GTA movie something Uwe Boll would lose his load over?

(Aronofsky cannot improve Verhoeven's RoboCop.)

WTF?
I don't know what is up with all of the bitching about Aronofsky remaking Robocop. Mark my words, it will be amazing. All these people hating on it right now will all say how great it is once it hits theaters (granted it does). And even if it is a slow news day, who cares? This was a good article. I don't care who directs it...
...remaking RoboCop is like messing with Jaws! It's a prefect classic that cannot be improved upon. To waste a great director like Aronofsky's talents on a remake/reboot is even worse.

Wow! A whole story about a director who plays a video game! You guys are really out of ideas for articles aren't you? And we complain about Hollywood being out of fresh ideas...

Leave Robocop be
I feel like Aronofsky shouldn't remake Robocop. I dislike remakes, and Robocop doesn't need one.

GTA 4 came out a week before I had 3 major college papers due. How the fuck I didn't fail those classes is beyond me.

But, a GTA movie would be totally redundant. As would a Metal Gear Solid movie. As would a Bioshock movie. As would a Gears of War movie. As would a God of War movie.... Fuck it, you see where I'm going with this.

Ditch Robocop
and focus on GTA instead. I think Darren can make this a great video game movie. the last decent one i saw was hitman. Grand theft auto has all the elements to be a great film. Just don't let Paul W.S. Anderson touch it.

Movie
I actually think this and "Fallout 3" are two of the only games that would make good movies. I think it'd be kind of a "Wire"-esque thing. I mean, how many movies have been made about criminals? And a lot of them are great. You wouldn't take it plot point for plot point, but if you took the characters and some of the major plot points, I think GTAIV could make a good film.

Regardless of whoever is attached to make a Grand Theft Auto movie, it sounds about as enticing as Ecks Vs Sever...

I'm with you Sampson. I have a lot of faith in Aronofsky and his vision, but I'm afraid that whatever studio is backing Robocop will not have faith.

I don't know what this news really is, but if it has anything to do with a GTA movie -- which is what I thought I was about to read when I clicked the headline -- then I just want to put my vote out there: No.

Awesome game series; unnecessary movie.
