Bateman extracts Judge Apr. 28, 2008

Or should it be Bateman judges Extract? Either or. After the success (and genius of OFFICE SPACE), hopes were high for Mike Judge’s return to the live-action game, IDIOCRACY. After the studio somehow botched the distribution, it got a direct-to-DVD release. After watching it, or at least some of it, it was easy to see why. OFFICE SPACE it ain’t. Now Judge is trying to redeem himself with a project called EXTRACT, which Miramax will distribute and which will be produced by Judge’s new production house, Ternion. Judge has also gone ahead and landed him the perfect leading man in Jason Bateman, who fits right into that Judge mold of the relatable, sympathetic everyman perfectly. The film “explores what it's like to be the boss when everything seems to be shifting around you.” I have no idea what that means so can someone help me out here please? Explain what kind of plot this could possibly be, because I'm stumped. Bateman will be seen next in the summer tentpole HANCOCK.

Extra Tidbit: Jason Bateman's sister is FAMILY TIES star Justine Bateman.

I think Idiocracy wasn't as good as it could have been because he never had the full support of the studio even when filming. If they had fully been behind the movie it could have been great.

Office Space on the other hand I think is a lot like Full Metal Jacket. The first half is a classic the second is only ok.

This site bags on Christian Slater as a mob boss (which he already did by the way in mobsters whatever that's worth) and Stallone (who also played a mob boss in Oscar whatever that's worth) and now Mike Judge. There's nothing wrong with Idiocracy. Now mention something as brain damaged as Lost Boys 2 and the writers here go apeshit in love. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but there are probably a fair number of viewers who did not appreciate Idiocracy because it was at their expense. A little more news and a little less "clever" comments would be nice and less revealing about the writers for this site.

While I wasn't 100% on IDIOCRACY, I will say that I've ended up referring to it several times after receiving such charming Net Speak emails as: "U Sux teh bals."

Because the movie, poorly executed and even more poorly cast, still had an important point. That the ignorance of an entire nation will occur, beyond our wildest dreams. And that we're actually in the middle of it right now.

Seriously, of all the people that criticize the movie no one seems to say what they disliked about it. Its probably the funniest thing that Luke Wilson did without the help of Wes Anderson.

Mike Judge does two types of comedy, one is low key satire (think Office Space or King of the Hill). While Idiocracy doesn't fit under this umbrella its more typical of Mike Judge's early work (like Beavis & Butthead) and remains funny despite how unsubtle the jokes are.

I'm glad to see Jason Bateman back to doing good movies again. Seeing him in the ads for Hancock and that awful Dustin Hoffman toy store movie have kind of depressed me as of late. Still, he was in (before that) Smokin' Aces and The Kingdom. Two of the better movies of the last two years.

I'm with Neon, I rather liked Idiocracy. It was a hell of a lot better than Date/Epic/Scary Movie! Not that I've seen many of them, but I can imagine, from the trailers.

"Redeem" himself? I like Idiocracy and I'll defend it to the very end, I say!!! What is wrong with it? It's better than the majority of the comedies out there.
