Brolin Escapes to NY? Jun. 23, 2008

Source: Spileberg News

Josh Brolin When the remake of John Carpenter's classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK was first announced, Gerard Butler initially signed on to slap on the eye patch to portray Snake Plissken. He quickly came to his senses and dropped out of the project and now the folks over at Spielberg News are saying that Josh Brolin is in the running to portray the role made iconic by Kurt Russell. Of course, they didn't say that he's signed or that he's been approached, merely that he's "in the running", meaning that he's likely one of many who are being considered. Either way, what do you guys think about Brolin taking on this role? Good? Bad? Meh? Strike back a little sumtin' sumtin' below, why dontcha?

Extra Tidbit: Brolin is following in his father's footsteps by playing W in Olvier Stone's biopic as James Brolin portrayed Ronald Reagan in THE REAGANS.

So I guess we're never gonna get that proposed third Escape movie, Escape from Earth. Too bad. I was looking forward to it. Its not fair to compare a third Escape movie to Indiana Jones 4. What made Indiana Jones 4 horrible was not Harrison Ford's old age but George Lucas's creative control over the project.

No matter how good the actor, and Brolin is an incredible actor, he just can't replace Kurt Russell. I don't know if John Carpenter is in desperate need of mone or has just totally out of ideas but he needs to stop allowing his movies to be remade. If they remake this, expect a remake of 'Big Trouble in Little China' and (another remake of) 'The Thing' not far behind.

You know, after the instant cult classic Planet Terror and two excellent performances in American Gangster and No Country For Old Men, I sort of saw Brolin falling in a similar category as Kurt. Very similar rugged but handsome looks, and equal awesomeness overall. He was the first actor to come to mind after I heard about the proposed remake. This guy has a very promising career ahead of him. I'm very excited for W.

I think the remake of such a classic cult fav as EFNY is a bad idea. If it HAS to be done again, I think Brolin would make a worthy Snake. I just don't see Josh taking a role like that at this point in his career. Here's a guy that had one of the best years for an actor in decades and is on everyone's radar now. He's right up there with Robert Downey Jr.

BTW - I love Kurt too, but bringing him back for a sequel might be as bad as Indy 4! This whole sequel/remake thing has gone a little crazy. Death Race 2000?! C'mon! What's next Jaws, The Exorcist, Shawshank, The Godfather, Chinatown, [link]

They should really just bring back Kurt Russell and call it another sequel. C'mon, I had to suffer through Harrison Ford grunting around and getting chased by Russians for another go but I can't do the same with Russell?

I'm gunna keep a close eye on this project, mostly because I liked the original but there are parts I think could have been better and that's why studios make remakes, right?

I still think Gerard would've been the shit in Escape, but if i can't have Butler then I'll take Brolin. His level of kick-assery in No Country was more than enough to warrant my respect

Brolin would be a good choice to play Snake. He certainly got the look. But then again, Escape from NY is a classic in its own right and should be left on the shelf of classic. If the soon-to-be-named director think he/she can pull it off, go ahead but don't screw up. And I think the reimagine of Halloween is better than the reimagine of The Fog. I'll stay neutral on Escape from NY for now.

Brolin does have that very macho Americanness and quirky showbiz background that Kurt Russell had. And that's a rarity among actors in Hollywood. (They also both have proven their ability with shining in b-grade material) If they sign him then they've done one better than their previous front-runner.

I really liked "Escape from New York," but there's a big flaw in the argument against remaking it. "Escape from New York" is not a classic. It is a CULT classic. When people say they like the movie it's because of the exact combination of talents and budget f/x that made the film what it is. After all, what did they say when Carpenter went Bigger and Better with "Escape from L.A."?

I think that Brolin is a good choice! Although, I also think that remakes often suck! ie. Halloween.

Not really a huge fan of Gerard Butler. All his movies suck it big. I thought that "300" was crap!
