Cap America plot! Oct. 6, 2008

Marvel appears to have revealed a plot synopsis of sorts for THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA. While it could still ultimately deviate from this, it's nice to see that at least at this point, it looks like they're staying pretty close to the original mythos.

"Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the ‘Super-Soldier Serum’ and bombarded by ‘vita-rays.’ Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers."

So now the question is who will play ol' Cap. I still like Matt McConaughey but what the hell do I know. I lost a sizeable amount of my savings on the Oscars and Amy Ryan. I also bet on WALL-E to be the biggest earner this Summer. I am not the person for film-related predictions. What do I look like a freaking psychic??

Extra Tidbit: And don't even trouble yourself with those Will Smith rumors.

It was actually deadshot that originally suggested Hirsch for Bucky, I just happened to agree with him. I've thought that Duhamel would make an excellent Captain America for a while now, and after looking around here it's nice to know I'm not alone.

The trouble with Bay as a director is that although he nails the visual aspects his films tend to seriously lack substance, which is exactly what has made most recent superhero films so good. Martin Campbell would be good though, and although it's tough to be certain with Blomkamp since he hasn't done a feature yet, if Peter Jackson trusts him enough to hand him Halo, then I'd probably trust him too.

Other Directors I'd Trust:
1. Nick Cassavettes
2. Marc Forster
3. James Mangold
4. Gary Ross
5. Joe Wright

Ross especially needs to be handed a big budget comic or fantasy flick, and since he seems to gravitate toward period pieces, this seems like an especially nice fit.

Hey this is for the Moron that said race doesnt matter for Captain America. You know what i want to see, Seth Rogen play Luke Cage. thats what i want, a Fat jewish guy playing a Bad Ass Mother Fucking Black man. I cant believe you said race doesnt matter. Obiviously you are not a comic reader. Hey, Heres a news flash: Captain America has been a blued eyed, blonde hair White guy for over 65 years. I do not want to see Will Smith playin Cap. Hello its set in 1940's The American Civil Rights Movement takes places 15 years later. So if we really want to believe this movie is set during WWII then they should show how Blacks were treated in the 40's. Is that what we want to see? Will Smith fighting in a war and whites are okay with that? SHUT UP, do your History homework. Ryan Reynolds as Black Panther? What the fuck are you smoking? Read a comic for over 30 years and say "Yea i think he should be a White guy." NEXT!

Im still suprised no one mentioned Leo. I think there are a lot of disbelievers.

i would really want someone who is used to directing inventive fast and kinetic action. i hope more detail and consideration is given to the cap's fight choreography as well, atleast more than TDK. I could imagine some CG enhanced Bourne style fights. it would be nice to see more elaboration on how they've portrayed the super soldier abilities so far in Incredible Hulk. From watching Kung Fu Hustle, I'm sure fights can be subtly enhanced with CG to that same degree but in a more serious context for cap, and be just as affecting. Oh man, and the shield, can't wait to see how they handle that thing being thrown.

Wouldn't that be kind of weird having Steve Rogers be in his early twenties when he took the Super Soldier serum and then all of the sudden look like some forty year old movie star afterwards? I mean WWII only lasted six years (four for the U.S.) you wouldn't even have time to realistically age him. That's why I like the idea of someone in their early 30's (read: Josh Duhamel, Matt Damon) they could look young enough to play Steve and old enough to play Cap. Stan Lee seems to have a similar idea since he suggested Jensen Ackles.

Ben Foster, Rebecca Romjin, James Marsden and Ryan Reynolds already have/will appeared in multiple superhero franchises so it's not that unheard of.

But they need to get a director, a writer and an actor attached. I keep hearing the names being thrown around and I can't see any of them really cutting it. I still really think that this is a role that is tailor-made for Matt Damon. He's the kind of actor who is Bale-esque in his regimen for prepping a role. He could conceivably drop to around 130 lbs. for the pre-Rebirth stuff and bulk up again. He's still young enough (as opposed to Pitt) who's now in his forties. He's got the chops and he's definitely got the skills for the fight scenes. I see someone like Baron Zemo for the main villain with the Red Skull somewhere in the background orchestrating things. Matt Mc is just not the right type, actor-wise... and there's no way in hell that I'd be able to get around a southern accent for a kid from Brooklyn. Also, Bucky would need to be a part of this. Please, no Shia. Someone like Emile Hirsch would work. As for a director, I'm still not really sure.

And how about this for the ending... Cap and Bucky are trying to disarm the bomb headed for London and it blows up over the Atlantic and Cap sinks into the water... and post-credits, Stark and Fury find his frozen body.

According to Dave Davis in his article for Joblo: "Dragonball Trailer" he didn't think it was a problem that the main character was white instead of Asian, sooo...race shouldn't matter here.

However, aside from Smith? I say go with an actor who could be cast against type...i.e. Michael Keaton, a comedian, was in Batman (and even Bill Murray was considered for the part)...

Agree... Deadshot pretty much nailed the ending. That'd be the perfect segue into an Avengers movie.

Proyas is an awesome director, but his films tend to be pretty dark whereas Capt. America would need to be relatively uplifting. Proyas would be better suited for the Daredevil reboot. Eastwood would be an absolute dream choice to direct, but I'm not sure he'd go for a comic flick. But who knows, I never would've expected Kenneth Branagh to either.

For what it's worth:

Captain America - Josh Duhamel
Bucky Barnes - Emile Hirsch
Red Skull - Jim Caviezel
Peggy Carter - Anne Hathaway
General Phillips - David Schofield
Dr. Abraham Erskine - John Hurt

I think casting well known female lead like Hathaway would help offset the fact hat Duhamel's not a big name leading man.

Also nickula11, you realize Nick Nolte is 67, right?

You guys are not paying attention to the times, man. Ridley Scott has an action flick out this week with Leo. Go watch it and then think it through. LEO being cap. If Ridley directs this with a lot of good action, Im kidding im not really saying this, Of Course the film will be well done. Then i nominated Leo as Cap and Ridley Scott directs. If this movie does well then Mark my words now! It will be a Leo/Ridley The First Avnger: Captain America movie. If it does shitty then fuck what i said.

DeadShot: Great ending, man. Dead on. Amazing film.

Call me Indiana: Im sorry i think that was your name. Im glad someone agrees with that and understands how amazing that movie would be with Eastwood directing it.

We need big names in this flick not some frickin dude from BattleStar Galatica. Wow dude stop with that. This film is going to need some Heavy Hitters. Leo (If his new film does well), Matt Damon, Brad Pitt even. If Kate Hudson is in Captain then im ok with Mcconahey or however you want to spell it.

Dont forget this film has to have a great Action Director behind the lens. That is Key.

I still think Matt Damon would just own as Cap, but I'm not too keen on the whole movie being set around WWII.

I thought Iron Man worked so well as a movie because they updated the story to fit modern times. If anyone remembers, in the comics Tony Stark was injured during the Vietnam War and captured. But of course they changed it around so Tony would be injured and captured in the Middle East.

I just don't want to see a whole Captain America movie set in WWII because it would then limit the film to where, in the end, he would be frozen in a block of ice.

Much of the Avengers movie would then deal with Cap being found and awoken, and I would rather see that dealt with alone in a Cap flick.

besides matt damon, i dont think pitt, dicaprio or mcconaughey have that IT to make me believe they can be the greatest patriot & american soldier. i agree with what was said earlier, out of all of those guys i can only see damon prepping properly for the role. i would actually be excited about a damon as the cap, cuz i can imagine him alongside downey and norton and having great chemistry onscreen as avengers... yeah, that would be great. though, if marvel mount were to decide to go with some new blood or a budding star, i'd pick...

...josh duhamel. dude has the voice, looks, jawline, presence, and no celebrity baggage or big star price tag (yet) either - and you know how much that can possibly detract from the role for alot of viewers, fans and casual movie goers alike. duhamel would be a practical choice and just an all around suitable casting for steve rogers. at no time in transformers did i feel like that guy was a lousy actor, he did his part well being a convincing platoon leader. and thats the key word right there, LEADER.

now all they need is the LOTR/pathfinder dude as THOR and the Avengers movie would be the tits. im sure they can't fuck up the casting of wasp and hank pym.

As for a director, someone below mentioned Clint Eastwood. If he'd be willing to do it I say go with him. An Eastwood directed Captain America flick would be a damn good movie. Actually, I just read an article in the paper today about Eastwood and he said he's at a stage in his life where he doesn't want to repeat himself. Well, Clint, you haven't done a comic book movie, so how's about maybe directing Captain America for us?

I like that they will be hopefully keeping the film set in WW2 at least for the first film. I think it is a unique angle for this character that other characters can't approach, a superhero story actually based around real world events of the 40's. I met Avi Arad a couple of years ago at a con and we dished about it for a few minutes and I was like "It's like Spider man meets Saving Private Ryan" and he's like "With a little Forrest Gump..." He was big on the man out of time angle but I say save that for a sequel. If your audience doesn't feel some grounding to an environment they won't care. Keep it in the 40's.

For a director Proyas is a nice choice, Liman is good with action but bad with plot holes soooo...go with the Baymiester...I know he wouldn't do it after doing transformers but seriously his eye for action would spice up this whole flick into a rockin' shabang of goodness. I love Bad Boys...
If not he then hand it over to Joe Wright the director of Atonement...I liked his period piece stuff in that film who knows he might be good with all the action.
Oh and for a star...I nominate...myself! When I was 8 I had a Cap costume made for halloween. I might be able to squeeze into it still plus I'm willing to lose 20lbs (as part of my contract of course) and I have an affinity for shielding myself from attacks (more in a metaphorical way but it still applies...)

he just seems to be a bad omen for most of the big budget movies he stars in (artistically speaking, not monetarily). "Hancock" was alright, I guess, but "I, Robot" and "I Am Legend" could have been classics yet where dumbed down and thematically altered for mainstream audiences. Now, I don't blame Smith for the failure of those two films to capture their potential, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't grind my teeth when I see Smith advertising Converse in "I, Robot".

Smith has enough offers on his slate; Marvel should find someone else for the role. Besides, McConaughey needs a "reboot" in his career and this would be it.
