Cloverfield sequel Jan. 24, 2008

Cloverfield It seems our favorite little seen but exceptionally destructive CLOVERFIELD monster isn't quite done decimating New York. While director Matt Reeves has talked about the possibility of a sequel in the last few days, he also apparently left a little sequel hint within the film itself. If you're weary of spoilers, this is where you should stop reading. If not, carry on. Apparently, there's two lines said at the tail end of the movie that suggest this shit ain't over. In the first, which you can find HERE, some unsuspecting monster victim cries "Help us!" and HERE, you can hear someone say "It's still alive!" You mean there's more viral marketing goodness to come? Neato! Thanks to Manny and Not_tragedi for the heads up!

Extra Tidbit: Let's hope this time there's DOUBLE the viral marketing campaign! Bigger and better for the sequel, right?

Finally saw 'Cloverfield' today, and I liked it. A lot. But I was very glad when it was over--it's not a movie world I would want to inhabit for anymore than the movie's 90 min runtime. Also--the city's decimated--where could they possibly go from here? To explain things to death would be to detract from the first film. Are they going to do the camcorder gimmick again or will it be a straight up shot film like the shitty Blair Witch sequel? Nowhere to go but down--can we just have one movie not be a franchise for once?

I think a sequel would be cool, but it would be better to see it from someone else's perspective... Hud and the gang got a bit annoying. Following someone intelligent would be nice. The two clips you listed in the article are the same clip.. in the first one they aren't saying "help us"-- it's just the reversed version of him saying "it's still alive."

Why do people think that the we a backstory? I think the lack of one is what made this movie brilliant. If a similar real-life situation like this were to happen do you think you would know all the answers as its happening? Of course you wouldn't. Half the stuff reported on the news thats "Happening Now" is people giving their opinion of whats going on, no real facts. I don't want to know what happened before, I don't even really care what happens afterward. I loved being thrust into the middle of that situation not knowing anything. Not every movie, or even real life, is full of sunshine and happy endings. I say bring on another point of view for a sequel. I'm hooked. Plus that monster was bad a$$.

Yes more is better, can't wait for that. Should definetly continue since everyone else is dead and the monster is still roaming around

I liked Cloverfield and was lucky to be someone that doesn't get motion sickness from films. My wife and I both commented that it was left open to a sequel/different POV. Of course, the handheld cannot be done again, since it was the whole gimmick of this movie. We kinda felt that this would lead into the summer blockbuster with higher quality, stationary cameras (all of this could have been filmed at the same time as the current film), except told from more of a military/government POV (especially since Cloverfield is from found footage now in the hands of the military). This could also tie up a lot of the loose ends that are dangling from Cloverfield and create an entirely different experience from the first film. It could give more backstory on the monster, a different ending and have the Cloverfield kids tie in at various spots.

I liked the approach to the monster movie theme but I didn't care about the characters one bit.

If I hear/read/see one more goddamn thing about anything to do with "Cloverfield", I'm going to fucking scream.

Don't get me wrong, this flick had some good scenes, and great ideas. But, following around those moronic yuppies the whole movie was painful. I think the best bet would be to do a follow up with a television series, JJ Abrams style. A lot of people that I talked to felt jerked off with with no climax. Bringing a sequel theatrically would be disastrous. If so, bring some characters with some smarts, and some balls! I couldn't wait for those annoying idiots to die.

i'm ok with the idea of a sequel, I trust the team to come up with something good, but I'd prefer them to just do another original film. Cloverfield was very different and was very good, so why not keep that as it is, and do the same to another genre/idea.
Although I did like what Matt Reeves said about the "interacting stories" of Hud and the other guy with a camera (on the bridge) filming each other.

I agree with shoe. I loved the movie as it was, and I think a sequel might serve only to hurt this film. Also, I don't think the "help us" is what everyone is making it out to be. Considering the clarity of "it's still alive," i'd have to say that was the audio they wanted us to hear. "help us" seems like a bit of a stretch, but that's just my opinion.
