... There’s no “R” in Smoking!
by Sturdy

There are some rumblings that have been quietly making their way around the net in which certain groups are pushing hard for Hollywood to reduce the number of smokers in their films. The answer, according to these groups, is to make images of smoking enough to give a movie an “R” rating. I don’t want to belittle anyone’s feelings about cigarettes or preach to you about how insane certain groups are with forcing their beliefs on others, but I think giving a movie an “R” rating because someone lights up a cigarette is preposterous.

Of course, I understand that smoking cigarettes is bad for you. Is there really anyone out there that doesn’t understand that? We have to suffer through those “truth” commercials in the theater and on our DVD’s and we see/read the warning labels everywhere. It’s not really a secret, and hasn’t been for the past 20 years or so. But when it comes down to it; anyone that chooses to partake in a known, life-threatening activity is accepting a certain amount of risk. Stupid kids will always try to imitate things they see in movies. Should SUPERMAN be rated “R” because some dumbass jumped off a roof, thinking he could fly? No. Although stupid, smoking isn’t illegal and Hollywood shouldn’t burden the responsibility of shielding anyone from an unsafe act.

Is this really why your grandpa smokes?

I also think it has to be taken into context. I don’t think Hollywood has an excessive number of people smoking in movies. I’d love to hear some examples where there’s been a character smoking a cigarette and the act of smoking didn’t fit the character. It’s not like Zac Effron is lighting up between dance numbers in HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL. And in a movie like GREASE, would you try to tell me the Thunderbirds wouldn’t be smoking? I’m clearly not a pro-smoker, but even I have to accept that certain characters, at certain periods in time, smoked.

Slutty Sandy wouldn’t have been the same without a cigarette

I also find it odd that the act of smoking is still such a hot topic that there are people that are pushing Hollywood to change the way they make movies to accommodate it. With nuclear war, terrorist attacks, incurable and fatal diseases, and countless other life-threatening possibilities, why is smoking still a relevant conversation? If someone is still smoking, or starts to smoke at this point in time, there’s really nothing more you can do to stop them, short of making cigarettes illegal.

These commercials get old.

I’m not the MPAA’s biggest fan and I don’t think they act on the best interest of anyone. All of their “rules” and “guidelines” are ambiguous and inconsistent. Although I’d like to see them have some sort of set guidelines, smoking cigarettes shouldn’t be considered. This sets a bad precedent and I wonder where it would stop. Maybe every time a character drives five miles over the speed limit, that should give the movie an “R” rating. Or every time a character drinks a beer, instant “R”. Mandating Hollywood to alter the way they write or film characters in order to push the beliefs of a particular group is bad news for everyone.

Not only is an automatic R rating for scenes of smoking an unnecessary restriction on free speech, but it sends exactly the opposite message that it intends to. Rather than telling kids that smoking is bad, it tells them that it's "cool" and "adult" because it can only be shown in R-rated movies, like boobies or F-bombs or people getting their intestines ripped out.

For a case in point, just look at the so-called "anti-smoking" ads that the cigarette companies were forced to make after they lost their court case. They made them so that, while they superficially appeared to be against smoking, they made the act look cool and sexy - to say nothing about the forbidden fruit factor that was now involved. Plus, they made the anti-smoking position look bad in the minds of young people by having what appeared to be parents espousing it (because we all know how teenagers love to listen to any advice that their parents give them). As a result, these anti-smoking ads became stealth tobacco commercials targeted at young people - exactly what the court rulings had tried to outlaw. Making smoking into an R-rated activity will have the same effect.

To cite a recent example of smoking in movies, Son of Rambow should not be rated-R.

That said, this isn't a freedom of speech issue. People have the freedom to speak out against smoking, the MPAA has the right to rate movies as if they are chimps at typewriters, and filmmakers have rights to release films unrated.

The issue is that 2 dimensional characters in the media have more influence than parents.

Oh, and that cap of Olivia Newton-John is pretty much the best thing ever.

I hate smoking. It is stupid and has taken the lives of 6 of my family members. Smoking in films should have NO affect on the rating at all. People themselves take the chance to try smoking without the help of their favorite actor. Hollywood needs to relax and let things be. America is becoming less and less a free country. This is our concern dude!

If they succeed, they might just decide they don't wanna see people drinking alcohol in films, since that does really bad things to your liver. What about people shooting guns on film. Bullets ripping into vital organs does tend to end lives, which is bad, I guess. Slippery slope.
These people shoot smoke some weed and chill the hell out.

A life time of smoking is said to decrease your life by 10 years.
I say great, wearing diapers once in your life is enough.

We're losing fucking focus, life is nothing without freedom and this another dumb restriction.

But whats next? Guns can only be in movies if they arent being used? I mean really, everything else that are in movies and they want to jump on Cigs. Only thing that will get kids to start smoking, is other kids. And thats where this lil thing called......parents would come in to play. yes i know..Parenting is such a taboo word these days.. whaaa?? i have to raise my own kids? the nerve! the nerve i say!

Agree with you, but this issue has been around for while. One case most recently, Hugh Jackman said in an interview Wolverine was allowed to have a cigar in the X-men Origins movie, but it couldn't be lit due to all the political pressure.

Even if they make showing smoking rated R, it'll just mean they can have characters say "Man, i wish we had some cigarettes" to get around it.

the truth videos on our dvds are ridiculous. im buying a movie to go watch at home to enjoy myself. i dont need to skip through commercials i see daily on tv that tell me to stop smoking. i do smoke on occasion but its not because i just my favorite character in a movie light up. and to even play these truth ads in the theater now it gets really annoying to see over and over when really they serve no purpose but to make others really angry, and myself.

second, what happened to parenting? if theres any lack of responsibility from keeping kids from smoking, its their parents. and parenting has seemingly become a lost art. thats their responsibility as a parent is showing their kids what they should and shouldnt do. and now rules for kids just dont seem to exist and its allowing for a lot of youth to pick up smoking as a habit through high school. if not earlier than that. as for people who want to pick up smoking randomly, well they know better, theyve seen the ads! haha.

Agreed 100% Sturdy. I was a smoker for about a year or two, and it was never because of the movies, it just tasted so damn good and made me feel better. I appreciate anyone trying to get it out there that smoking is something you don't want to get hooked on, but X-Men movies shouldn't be rated R just because Wolverine lights up a cigar, the same goes to Lord of the Rings with all the pipe smoking. And, hell, what if a film features a character that's suffering the negative effects of smoking and is trying to kick his habit? Does that still warrant an R rating?

Also, I don't see why everyone's pointing fingers at the right because of this. The left has had it's fair share of censorship bullshit. Tipper Gore anyone?

First off, I think this is the best C'Mon Hollywood to date, and would like to applaud Sturdy for it.

Now, the main course, I smoked for a summer when I was 10 or so (while livng in Germany), and did not do it because my favorite movie characters were smoking, I did it because it was taboo/forbidden and all that jazz. I have not smoked anything since than and have lost an uncle to lung cancer, caused by smoking. Everyone knows it's bad for them, but they still do to calm nerves, or because they think it makes them cool (it doesn't) or for various other reasons. To make a movie "R" simply because it has a scene or two of smoking is te dumbest idea of all time.

Dessert. To all the Schmoe posters that have cited this as the MPAA's idea, it's not. This is being spearheaded by the American Medical Associatation Alliance, which despite being made up of doctors and the like, is full of retards. Please, do not get me wrong the MPAA is in sevre need of an over-haul and mostly sucks balls, but this one time, they did the right thing, and have not caved in.

I get so sick & tired of right-winged morons still believeing that any form of entertainment whether music TV or movies will influence a child to wanna smoke or drink or prone them to violence. It was bad when I was younger but now in the new media of the internet & such it just gets worse & worse. People will never learn & sometimes take the rights to free speech, expression & press for granted. Now to try to govern movies is even more ridiculous & shows how ignorant people can be.

While I do feel that smoking is a relevant issue, and I'm not entirely against the MPAA putting a warning that there is smoking in a movie, as they have started to do in recent years, I more or less agree with you, Sturdy.

There are times when various ati-smoking producers and the like have kept cigarettes out of movies (see "The Devil Wears Prada," Paris sans cigarettes), it's best done as a personal choice.

"Tom & Jerry" might seem a perfect example of old-fashioned use of cigarettes in kids' fare, but they were made well before the risks were fully realized. then again, they aren't people, either.

We should never hope to return to the glory days of the 1940s when EVERYONE smoked. And while I did grow up thinking smoking looked cool, I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. If my parents smoked, it might be different, and therein lies a more basic problem. But it's still a free country, and as long as it is I think the MPAA ought to do what they're supposed to do, and recognize that (I know their record isn't that great).

I actually agree with the MPAA on this, and wrote a paper about it a year or two ago.

Yes, parents should be responsible for teaching their kids not to smoke, unfortunately this isn’t a perfect world and some kids grow up with crappy parents. These kids also have poor role models and they may look to the big screen for a role model. A 13 year old kid seeing Christian Bale smoking will have a MUCH larger effect than seeing a random stranger smoke.

It’s not really relevant to bring up smoking in older movies and cartoons like Grease and Tom and Jerry. Back then it was an accepted way of life and people did not realize the extent of the damage that cigarettes caused. We now know how deadly they are so why still show them in movies, what’s the point? Unless the movie is a period piece, there’s no need for it.

I also think that smoking is in a way more dangerous than nuclear attacks and terrorism (in the States anyway). Cigarettes are legal, cheap, you can buy them anywhere, and most importantly they are deadly. How often does a nuclear attack happen in the US? Never. A terrorist attack? VERY rarely. Cigarettes kill thousands of people every year and someone like Bale, Depp, or Pitt smoking on the big screen is the BEST advertisement a smoking company could ask for.

I don’t necessarily think it should warrant an automatic R if it is an otherwise harmless movie, but filmmakers should not use smoking carelessly because it is an issue.

This is one of your best articles Sturdy. I feel much the same way as drexxell, in that it's the parents responsibility to teach their children about the dangers of smoking. Heck, when I was a kid I used to pretend smoke because I saw it in a movie, but my dad always made it a point to tell me that pretend smoking is okay and real smoking is bad for you. And I don't smoke. Well, not for real.

Groups like these that always try to shove their beliefs down our throats and change things to better their "cause" really piss me off. Because what it all boils down to is they're severely lacking in their responsibility as parents, and instead of stepping up and doing a better job they have to point their annoying little fingers and blame someone else.

As both a father of young children and someone who watched his own father die from cigarette-induced lung cancer, I feel uniquely qualified to chime in on this:

I totally agree with Sturdy. It is preposterous to make smoking an automatic "R" rating. Unlike sex and violence, both of which happen in either privacy or rarity (or both), smoking happens in common public appearances. My children have seen smokers all around them (on the street, in restaurants that still allow it - thanks Glory Days, in the smoking room at the airport). They know why their grandfather isn't alive. They know why they shouldn't smoke because I'm doing my job as a parent and talking to them. Even for those parents out there who aren't taking their responsibilities seriously, the MPAA isn't going to protect young eyes and young minds by removing the sight of smoking from G, PG and PG-13 movies. It's just too pervasive in the world for this decision to make a difference.

Smoking = Rated R? One of the stupidest ideas to come out of the MPAA yet.

Ok i agree with you but i do see in certain films where smoking is just completely stupid and gratuitous.

Action hero takes down a helicopter and they relax and celebrate with a cigarette. If a writer wants to make a character appear mysterious they have him smoke a cigarette sometimes. It's particularly popular in more independent films.

Yes this might not be intentional. It's advertising for the incredibly suggestive but i personally think it should be done away with because it's an overused writing tool.

Lazy writers use this as a prop sometimes ad i think they could do something else besides using a cigarette.

Also smoking kills thousands worldwide each year due to respiratory disease. when smokers do it they not only endanger themselves but everyone close to them. I think it is just as important to talk about as terrorist attacks or nuclear war. As soon as we stop seeing it as a problem it stops becoming one.

So i'm kind of on both sides of the fence. I don't think smoking should be in only r rated films but i would go one step further and say yes maybe they should be illeagal.

People will complain about choice and free will but i'd like to hear what a generation of people who hadn't grown up with smoking around them would say.

Would they choose to do it?

I remember watching a recent WW2 history film called "IKE: Countdown to D-Day" with Tom Selleck and I've never seen so much smoking in one film in my entire life as everyone smoked back in those days. And it was only rated PG for "mild language". Funny how the MPAA missed that one huh? ;-)
