Dark Knight Returns Sep. 11, 2008

Source: THR

It looks as though Warner Bros. is planning on rereleasing THE DARK KNIGHT in theatres come January, the heart of Academy award voting season. Apparently the studio wants to remind voters that their little-movie-that-could deserves an Oscar or ten. This is a brilliant move by the studio on so many levels. Voters definitely need to be reminded of THE DARK KNIGHT, seeing as how this was totally the summer of THE LOVE GURU, and TDK went virtually unnoticed, saddled by the brilliance that is Mike Myers. Also, by rereleasing the film, they might be able to actually make some profit, seeing as how TDK only surpassed the 500 million dollar mark in like it's fifth week. Pathetic by comic book movie standards. Finally by rereleasing the film, I get a chance to see it for a fourteenth time, enabling me to finally learn the colour of the African American reporter's tie in the press conference scene. At last, victory will be mine.

Extra Tidbit: It is not yet clear whether TDK will be rereleased only on IMAX screens, or on regular screens as well.

Also, Joel, you're a moron. If he said anything but "White" news reporter, there's always going to be one idiot without a sense of humor that would make light of it. Anyone can make jokes about anyone, just like Dave Chappelle can make jokes about white people. Chill out.

On your article:

Your "comedy" leaves much to be desired.

Now, if you actually did see "TDK" for the fourteenth time, and just noticing the tie on the "African-American" reporter...you're coming off as a sad case.

[Not too mention, out of all characters why are you noticing the tie on the "African-American" male? Most guys would be looking at Maggie Gyllenhaal...]

Now, as for the film itself. I thought it was pretty good. (I saw it a couple of weeks back; as a piece of filmmaking and expanding the Batman character, it does it's job).

I think it is possible to earn a couple oscars. For those who did not like the movie, that sucks. Now you know how us Juno haters felt last year. However The Dark Knight is an amazing movie and Juno was irritating.

I think it's a good idea, and I'll probably go and see it again, just to experience on the big big screen another time. However, apparently the DVD is coming out at the end of this year, so I'm not sure if the general movie going public will shell out money for a film that they can watch on their home theater set up. Sure, the movie geeks like us will go, but will anyone else?
I guess it depends how wide the release is, I live in Australia and they may not even re-release it here anyway.

To truly beat Titanic, DK needs Billy Crystal to do a comedic musical opening to the Oscars based around the movie.

Billy doesn't do the Oscars anymore? Well... he should.

I liked TDK, but Oscar bait, it is not. Maybe for Ledger's performance, but that's about it.

It'd be nice to finally see Titanic dethroned, though.

No surprises here and it'll probably add another 20 or 30 millions to it's box office.

Beating Titanic in the box office is turning from possible to probable. If Nolan makes a third movie TDK will have a re-rerelease before the opening of the third adding another few millions

I hoping for some oscar love heading the dark knight's way. In a financial mindset, I wouldn't be surprised if the DVD release date got pushed back to give those who are maybe on the fence about seeing dark knight in theaters again a reason to go (if they already have the DVD). But most likely it'll stay the same to attract all those holiday shoppers.

I really loved The Dark Knight, it was the Batman movie I wanted to see and I did not think Batman Begins could have been beaten. When they rerelease it, I'll go see it again because even though I will have the DVD, the big screen is never beaten.

I think it's a smart move on WB's part. Rereleasing does remind voters of a pretty good movie, which actually may be necessary since it could be forgotten with the upcoming slate of movies between Now and December.

Not to mention there really isn't much coming out in January and I think there's still a decent amount of people that would rather watch TDK again than some piece of junk.

What is funny here is how many people will hail this as a good "business" move but will still say "Fuck Fox" when it comes to Watchmen. Both situations come down to the same common denominator: dough, moolah, clams, bucks!

How often we give studios a "by" when it suits us!

But, hey, more power to them for trying to rake in more dough. My feeling is still that the film will not be overly recognized at Oscar time and that I'd HATE to see Ledger get a nod for this role. It was not his best, by far, and the academy has only awarded one posthumous award, and that one WAS well-deserved.
