And the sad part is I'm not even joking.

I'm refusing to believe this is actually happening, but all evidence would seem to point to this story being true: S. DARKO, a sequel to DONNIE DARKO is about to start shooting, focusing on Donnie's little sister. The story picks up seven years after the first film when little Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions. Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Samantha Darko, with Justin Chatwin (WAR OF THE WORLDS) and Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) joining the cast. And the of course, the icing on the cake: Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.

Wow, these guys sure know how to please movie fans. Maybe the prologue will feature a fifteen minute segment assaulting religion? Or Michael Bay banging my ex-girlfriend? I don't even know what else to say about this. I'm sure you guys will take care of that, though: Bring on the hate!

Extra Tidbit: Realistically, is there any chance this thing won't be a total disaster? Is there anyone that actually wants this? Please, step forward!

Why didn't I check the red box? I guess cuz in all honesty I feel it is so irrelevant what I actually feel that I'd rather not broadcast my emotional reaction to this thing.

I did see some link earlier about this, but being as I'm one of the minority who neither loved nor hated the original, and only saw it once, I can't feel passionate.

Still, because I did kinda like the original, I'd just like to point out some things that, judging by the 6 or so pages of complaints(I'm assuming), has already been covered:

If two Darko kids have issues stemming from mental illness and the strange ability to time-warp, how come their parents seem like such average folks?

And how do you market this thing without the signature Frank the Rabbit?

And in my opinion Los Angeles has to be maybe the most boring place to take this whole story, since everyone in L.A. is a little nutty (strike that, any city).

And finally, whether or not Richard Kelly is directly involved with this has nothing to do with whether this will be directly involved with Richard. The man made his career on "Donnie Darko," which has a cool ring to it by the way. And between his failed follow-up and whatever semblance of credibility he has left for "The Box," it feels like the exact wrong time to try and make an extra buck off of a sequel.

P.S.

Ever since Chatwin did the impossible and survived obliteration by aliens, only to be cast in every teen role since, I have come to the conclusion I really don't like that guy. Either it's the hair, or he needs to move out of high school already.

Donnie Darko captured lightning in a bottle and no matter what cast, screenplay, and/or director who are desperate enough to sign onto a "sure thing" because of the built-in fan base of a cult classic, this will not be a quality endeavor. I can't possibly see where there is anywhere to go from the first film, which just means they will rehash incredibly general themes from the first one with no real continuity of the storyline, throw in a couple familiar faces of some minor characters from the first movie, and essentially waste two hours of our lives in a hapless attempt to cash in on the notion that fanboy loyalty knows no bounds because we will blissfully hand over our $10 since the name "Donnie Darko" appears in the title. Whoever is producing this needs to wake up, stop insulting our intelligence, and put their time and energy into something original.

Am I the only one who thought "Donnie Darko" was dull, pretentious garbage? Whenever I hear Richard Kelly's name bandied about as the next brilliant creative Hollywood mind, I think of this movie and wonder, "what for?"

Put this next to "Memento" and "Requiem for a Dream" on the shelf of most overrated bad movies of all time.
