Farrell as Watson??

UPDATE 2 - That was quick. We kept in close contact with our source last night and finally got some confirmation. An offer was sent out to Farrell last week but he has passed on the role of Watson.UPDATE - Though some are doubting the veracity of this news, we checked back in with our source who was quite confident and said they "know for a fact" that Farrell is in. Let's sit back and see how it all plays out!

For quite some time it was rumored that Russell Crowe was in talks to star as Watson alongside Robert Downey, Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's aptly-titled SHERLOCK HOLMES. Then Latino Review broke the scoop that Crowe was in fact in talks to star as Professor Moriarty not Watson. That begs the question, who is starring as Watson. We put our own Sherlock hats on and busted out the novelty magnifying glass to get to the bottom of that mystery. What we found was something we didn't expect (and no, it wasn't the butler).

According to our sources Colin Farrell is in talks to star as Dr. Watson in SHERLOCK HOLMES. Colin Farrell strikes me as neither a doctor nor a writer (both professions of Dr. Watson) and frankly after his turn in MIAMI VICE, I'm having trouble picturing him as anything but a greasy-haired Sonny Crockett. But our scooper reminds us that SHERLOCK HOLMES is less tiptoeing and collecting clues and more kicking ass and taking names.

After digging around I was told that as of right now no one is "officially" signed on to play Watson but our sources are saying Farrell is the guy. It's not who I would pick (to be honest I don't know who I would pick) but they've already hooked me in with Robert Downey, Jr. and Russell Crowe. I'll have to trust Guy Ritchie on Farrell. What are you thoughts?

Extra Tidbit: It would be interesting to see Downey, Jr. working together with Russell Crowe and Colin Farrell since Downey, Jr. has said he based his TROPIC THUNDER character Kirk Lazarus on those two actors.

I agree that Gleeson would be great, but Colin Farrell is an underappreciated actor, possibly due to the fact that he's been in some bad movies (MIAMI VICE, ALEXANDER) but they weren't bad because of him. IN BRUGES is one of the years best films, and I think Farrell will fit nicely alongside RDJ.

I thought Colin Farrell did brilliantly in IN BRUGES, and he generally plays a wormy side character well. But Watson? No f*cking way.

Now if it was BRENDAN GLEESON, *now* we're talking a good Watson!

Colin Farrell is a very talented actor. It will be awesome to see him next to Russel Crowe and Downey Jr.

Farrell and Downey are brothers

See those round faces, bushy eyebrows, button noses and all? Even the manic style? They could end up being very funny together. They sure dont look like Holmes and Watson though, more like Mario bros.

As much as I didn't like Colin previously, salamimansam is right. Check him out in In Bruges. After seeing that, I think I'm gonna have to go ahead and say he'd do a good job.

IN BRUGES

Just check out IN BRUGES. That film should allay any fears. He shows he can be vulnerable, very funny and more. He would make a great Dr. Watson.

Actually, I believe it was more the writers who based Kirk Lazarus on Crowe and Farrell because if you read any interviews with RDJ he said that he didn't base his character on any one person. At least all the interviews I read, and I read a lot, maybe I missed one.

I don't know that I can picture him as the brainy type either but we do know that he can kick ass and if they're lookin for some humor, he was pretty genius in In Bruges.

This must be some really ball-busting, explosive Sherlock we're talking about. I thought maybe Mark Strong would wind up as Watson, which in the world of Conan Doyle wouldn't be a bad choice by any small measure. But this should at least be interesting if indeed Farrell has been cast.

Errr...

Hmmm well you've gotta admit Ritchie's possible cast is...unexpected. Not sur e about Farrell as Watson but I think Downey Jr is a good choice as Holmes (if he can do a convincing accent) and Crowe would be a great Moriarty.
