Favs on Iron Man 2? May. 6, 2008

With its massive opening weekend, it wasn't a huge surprise that a sequel to IRON MAN was announced by Marvel yesterday. What is surprising, however, is that director Jon Favreau isn't already locked up for a second strike at the super suited Stark.

"We've been speaking informally about it, and in concept we would all love to work together again," Favs tells EW of what we all simply assumed. "There's no formal arrangement yet, but in theory we would all love to see it happen.... There's definitely a lot of ideas that we all have now. There's definitely a level of enthusiasm from myself and the cast to tell more stories."

Favreau also gives his thoughts on the AVENGERS movie ("I think it would be a very smart third film in the Iron Man series") and talks about how the "risk" of Downey paid off huge. Check out the interview RIGHT HERE.

Extra Tidbit: Note to Marvel: do whatever is necessary to get Favreau back behind the wheel. Downey is already contracted to return, but Favs is almost undoubtedly the guy responsible for the finished movie's creative success (with the box office earnings being additional proof), so please get on the same page...

My guess that the delay in signing Favs up for future Iron Man films is simply that he hasn't yet negotiated his contract with Marvel yet. I'm sure that Marvel would love to have him helm more films -- they just needed to find out how well Iron Man was going to do financially before working out his compensation, rights, obligations for the sequels.

While at WonderCon he mentioned that if Iron Man did well, he could have a shot at directing the Avengers movie. However given the timeline proposed by Marvel (IM2 in 2010 and Avengers in 2011) it seems unlikely he could do both. If proposed with a choice, would you go for IM2 or Avengers? ...Him too probably

Jon Favreau said he had a vision for three pictures and where the story would go. I think a bigger question is does the studio share that vision? I hope he returns and is able to complete a trilogy.
