Goonies still going?

For as long as I can recall, there have been rumors, hopes, promises and threats that 80s fave THE GOONIES would return. The source has been anyone from fans to the original stars to director Richard Donner himself, and the format has been everything from a remake to a straight-to-DVD sequel to a Broadway show.

But now (or again) it sounds like an actual legitimate theatrical sequel is finally in the works. Moviehole has it on good authority that Warner Bros. are currently pursuing a GOONIES follow-up, a straight sequel intended as a major release, with high-priced writers now kicking a script into shape. Rumor also has it that it will feature a new gang of kids but some of the original cast might return, pending availability (okay, Josh Brolin aside, that was a joke).

Will it finally become a reality this time? It would certainly be a relief to Donner, Corey Feldman, and probably a few other former kid actors. The original Spielberg-produced flick followed an adventurous band of kids with descriptive nicknames such as Data, Mouth, Chunk and whatever those chicks were called, as they found themselves involved with robbers, hidden treasure, and a mutant with a sweet tooth.

Extra Tidbit: Actor Jonathan Ke Quan (aka Data, aka Short Round) was part of the stunt crew on X-MEN.

I hope they wont treat this like shit, same way they treated Lost Boys II.

If its big budget action adventure comedy, and if it has the right director, then count me in.

If its going to be a lame lifeless carbon copy of the original, then count me out.

I think that it might work if:

Corey Feldman's character, who is now a D list actor, is beat up by an angry crowd.His old friends from the first movie come to his rescue. After some small talk they realize that Feldman deserved the beating and they also give him an ass kicking. THE END

I think this will be far too little and a little too late but if The Beard gets behind it then maybe not. I personally would love to see them all grown up, still living in Astoria and reluctantly pulled back into some sort of adventure, treasure hunt type thing. The only way most of the cast would return would be if Spielberg himself asked them to, we'll see

A new gang?!? I don't want a new gang, I want the original cast. I don't care if they have to come back as older or if they're CGI as kids... no, wait a minute. That's just sacrilege.

how about this...
A Sloth orgin story. All jokes aside handled right this could be alright...the only problem is the target audience, 8 to12 year olds, have probably never seen or heard of the Goonies.

Nope. Now out of all the remakes that have been coming out and/or announced to come out...the Goonies is the one that truly has a place in my heart. I wanted to search for treasure so bad when I was a kid. I'll definitely wait it out for more news, but it'll be hard to not be cautious.

i dont mind the whole "handing of the torch" shit that Balboa seems to dislike, but the only problem, kid actors these days just cant pull off the kind of acting needed for films like this anymore, it would just be another Sandlot 2, or Spy Kids, kind of corny, 'i want to kill myself' kind of shit

It would certainly make me happy as long as they were able to get the principal actors back, but like I said in another post, if they pull the "handing the torch to a new and younger group" kind of bullshit cop out it will completely ruin it. Hopefully they have better sense than that. I say bring it on!
