Jack Ryan Clooney? Jul. 6, 2009

George Clooney Kim Masters recently published an article on her "Daily Beast" blog questioning Sony head Amy Pascal's published motives for putting the kibosh on MONEYBALL, Steven Soderbergh's biopic on Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane starring Brad Pitt. Masters finds a conflict in shutting down MONEYBALL yet giving Clooney, a mediocre box office performer when not going by the name Danny Ocean, a development deal and supporting a James L. Brooks romantic comedy centering on…drumroll please…baseball.

At the tail end of this pretty interesting piece, she drops this little nugget: "Clooney also appears to be looking for his next commercial opportunity now that the Ocean’s franchise seems to be played out. A source says he expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan when and if Paramount attempts to revive the Tom Clancy series. Clooney seems to recognize that at this time in the world and this time in his life (he’s pushing 50), it’s time for some commercial maintenance." Interesting but weren't they supposed to be focusing on a young Jack Ryan? Isn't that the thing to do these days? Read the full piece over HERE.

Extra Tidbit: The last novel Ryan appeared in was 2003's "The Teeth of the Tiger".

That's not a bad idea. I'd love to see Clooney in some action role. He's good in "The Peacemaker".

...because when you pit him against Alec Baldwin or (yuck) BEN AFFLECK...then this is a brilliant breath of fresh air!

While I could stand to watch Jack Ryan stay off the big screen, Clooney is one actor I can get behind for the role.

While Alec Baldwin originated the role in probably the best of the series, Harrison Ford could sell himself in the role fairly efortlessly (probably because he was Harrison Ford). And so, George Clooney, who also has that effortless movie star quality about him, would be a perfect fit, especially given he's not unfamiliar with the CIA (but it could make it harder to do those little political movies).

Ryan Gosling is a Canadian, and Ryan is so American that I feel it needs a symbol. James Franco doesn't strike me as the man-of-action-and -analysis that has generally been what the character's been about. Besides, that sounds more like when they picked Ben Affleck just because he was the hot item at the time. True it worked for Baldwin, but at that time nobody'd heard of Jack Ryan.

And suddenly, I've gone off on a tangent over a franchise I'm not THAT into to begin with.
