Juno? No, I don't... Jan. 17, 2008

Source: JoBlo.com

The following is an editorial and does not necessarily reflect the opinions of JoBlo, JoBlo.com or Batman. But, for the record, Batman would totally hate this movie too.

It's highly possible that when all is said and done, JUNO will be one of the most financially successfully indie movies of all time. It's got a 93% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes and our own reviewer gave it a 9.5/10. It will surely receive Oscar nominations for its script, it's actress and possible for itself. And at the end of the day, I can't figure out what the hell I'm missing.

Before you ask, I'm not a victim of overhype backlash. I was lucky (??) enough to see JUNO before the hype machine kicked into overdrive so all I had heard was some relatively positive feedback from people I knew who had seen it. I even sought out local press screenings, which I never do. Leading up to the screening, however, I began to get a sinking feeling I wasn't going to enjoy the movie.

There are some movies you know you're going to love. Like TRANSFORMERS. I mean it's completely ridiculous, riddled with plot holes and full of hammy acting. But c'mon! It's giant, fighting robots! That's why I went to see it and that's why I liked it. Then there are some movies you just know you're not going to like. JUNO was shaping up to be one of those movies. Just the clips and commercials alone had me skeptical. Like that scene where Juno refers to Michael Cera's new girlfriend as Soupy Sales. Maybe I'm waaay out of touch with 16-year-olds but does Soupy Sales have a big following among high school juniors? Philo Kvetch references are the norm? (I'm 30 and even I had to Google that...)

Sure enough after about 15 minutes, I almost walked out and I never walk out of a movie. But I stuck through it for reasons I'm still not sure. "Maybe all the funny parts are towards the end," I told myself. Not quite. I couldn't help but think throughout the entire affair that if the script stopped trying so hard to be clever, it would be SO much better off. Why must the wisecracks come at such a rapid fire pace? JUNO doesn't have a bad script, it just has an overwritten one.

I've heard people say JUNO is a "hilarious comedy" but I can count the amount of times I laughed exactly once. (For the record it was Jason Bateman's reaction after he asks whether she's named after the town in Alaska.) And I never heard audible laughter once in the entire theater I was in watching it.

But seriously...this is what passes for funny? Saying words like "gob" and drinking gallons of Sunny Delight and using "Phuket, Thailand" as an expletive? "Honest to blog"? That's funny? OMG, she's calling on a hamburger phone!! LOLZ!!!

The good news is that I don't seem to be alone with my opinion. Just look at these quotes from reviews:

JUNO is "so heavy...with self-conscious cleverness" - Variety
"I’d spent the first 15 minutes or so gnashing my teeth and checking my watch." - The New York Times
"Juno is not a great movie." - Time Magazine

See! I feel vindicated. Wait, JoBlo is handing me a note. What?! These quotes are actually from positive reviews? Yup, it turns out that people who liked the movie agree with me. So why do people like it so much?

My disclaimer to the above is that I believe that almost everyone involved with this film is extremely talented. I was singing the praises of Ellen Page back in HARD CANDY days and this movie only furthers the genius of Cera and Jason Bateman. And while everyone is talking Page for an Oscar, the real performance in this movie is Jennifer Garner is the chilly soon-to-be adoptive mother. There's a Best Supporting Actress candidate right there.

Not since the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy have I felt so woefully out of the collective consciousness. But I don't have very exotic tastes and I tend to skew pretty mainstream so I have a hard time believing I'm the only one out there who is mystified by the success of JUNO.

So let's open up a debate. Not a flaming e-mail/post match because that will do nothing but make me cry. I'm talking about a healthy discourse on the merits of JUNO. Those who love it and those who hate it share your reasons below. Maybe we can get to the bottom of this mystery.

Finally saw it... It was fine, I smiled a lot, but never really laughed out loud. Those songs were driving me effing crazy after a while... Where's the Jason Bateman love? He was the best thing in it - him and J.K. Simmons. Best picture nom? Give me a break. (The best actress nom I can live with, but even that seems a stretch. And if it wins Best screenplay - which it will - I'll totally "friggin" vomit. Haha see that, "friggin" - like in the movie.)

Juno's over rated-ness reminds me of Little Miss Sunshine. The theater for that movie was laughing its collective nuts off but I'm sitting there thinking, "These are dramatic scenes! What the hell is so funny?!" And nominations for Abigale Breslin? She's a little girl playing a little girl, damnit!

I kinda' liked Juno because I see so many of these "indie" flicks that, when it comes down to it, are so full of pretention and smack of effort that when Juno actually entertained me, at least to some degree, I didn't leave the theater with a bad taste in my mouth (I'm looking at you Dan In Real Life).

Maybe the reason these types of films get so praised is because the average person doesn't go seeking films outside of the standard Hollywood type. So, when this comes along they simply praise its difference.

Didn't read the whole thing but I totally agree. I saw this at Toronto Film Fest before the hype machine kicked in, and the whole while when people were getting super excited, I was just saying "what the hell is all this about?" I tried to tell people, but they were commited to this being great. It just felt unnatural (despite being praised for being natural) and for trying too hard to be quirky and artsy when Napoleon Dynamite or Little Miss Sunshine could pull it off perfectly. I did think that Jennifer Garner/Jason Bateman stories were good though.

When I first saw the trailer I thought it looked cute, and I knew right away it would be this year's Little Miss Sunshine (a movie I found pretty underwhelming, but some parts I loved so much I had to buy the DVD...and Breslin's just so darn cute). What bothers me is these little quirky indies get so much damn attention for being written in some "free-spirited" woman's sleep when movies like 3:10 to Yuma only get praised for about two months. God, that movie was fucking awesome and I guarantee it'll hardly get any recognition at the Oscars this year.

But have no fear, there's still hope for the little guys like Juno.

...yay?

I'm still not even sure if I want to see this.

I'm sorry, but my reasons for hating this movie are probobly the weirdest out there.

I liked this movie up until the divorce talk. Seriously, what the hell is up with this constant character flaw? I am so tired of seeing broken marraiges, divorce, one dead parent, or anything involving a story where someone is unhappy with their spouse or boy/girl friend.

It seems like that is the only way to make a character broken nowadays.

SPOILER:

Heck even in Cloverfield, the main character's girlfriend cheated on him.

WHY???

Anybody else feel this way, good for you...in my book, but if you don't well then you are more forgiving of overused plotlines.

This always happens to me. Whenever a movie comes out that all the critics loved and gets numerous nominations and everyone says is an amazing movie including the people I know who've seen it and everyone just goes on and on about how perfect the movie is, I usually think it's just OK, am tempted to pretend it's good just so I won't be shunned or think it just plain sucks. Then, the few times I actually like the movie that critics love and gets numerous nominations and everyone goes on and on about how it's so amazing, the second I admit to anyone that I like that movie, there's just an outpouring of hatred for that movie that follows.

I know it sounds vain and egotistical but it happened with one of my best friends. He recommended 'Pulp Fiction' to me, lent me the DVD and the second I watched it and said I loved it, his exact reply was "It's ok, it wasn't that good". It's just disheartening that this happens so often especially now since I really did like 'Juno' and that same friend who pulled the switch on me about 'Pulp Fiction' liked 'Juno' as well so I was just happy that we actually agreed on this movie. But then, like clockwork, even though the guy who reviewed the movie on this site liked it too and I pretty much went to see the movie based on his review, someone who's opinion I actually respect doesn't like the movie. Hell, I liked 'Transformers' too so it's not like our tastes are so different. Oh well, it's just a movie. Rock on, sir.

Anyhow, earlier this very day I wrote in these forums that I felt the film was terribly overwritten, and Juno herself is arrogant and desperately up-herself. However, the story and the acting individually do not suffer from this, neither does Reitman's direction.

I felt like I was "tricked" into seeing Juno because the trailers didn't seem to promote the (annoying) dialogue that was spoken throughout the movie. Had I known prior that girls would be calling each other "dude" and that one of them thought of and uttered the phrase, "Honest to blog!" I would've thrown smoke bombs into the theater every day of the week so that no one would have to be in there to hear that ghastly, dare I say "hip" response.

But hey, it's a movie and movies don't always have to be realistic. The movie doesn't suck. It's sweet in its own right. Changing the script would not make it better, it would make it into another movie. It would probably turn into something like Knocked Up (which I personally didn't like, but ask me about that later).

The fact that other people loved this movie and I didn't pissed me off for a couple of days. But then I said to myself, so what if I didn't LOVE the movie? I didn't HATE it either. I'm kinda in the gray area about this one. And I'll leave it at that.

This reminds me of a joke that Woody Allen told at the end of Annie Hall. "This guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, "Doc, my brother's crazy; he thinks he's a chicken." And the doctor says, "Well, why don't you turn him in?" The guy says, "I would, but I need the eggs." I guess I would like to bash Juno for its all-too-clever script but then again, I liked how it dared to be original. So you can't have one without the other.

It's cool you didn't like the movie. It's one of those "cup of tea" kind of flicks, in which case this wasn't yours. But, I will say this... if you're gonna mention getting what you wanted from Transformers, you probably shouldn't follow that with a "C'mon!!!", especially after you gave many reasons why it was so disappointing. I mean... c'mon!!! Get it? But seriously, that movie could have easily been so much better, and you could have still had your fighting robots. 2 words... it sucked! And if I had a third word, I'd say it sucked balls! But back to Juno... it's a fargin' sweet story, with original and subtle relationships. A complete breath of fresh air for me, someone who watches 8 or more movies a week. Cloverfield is out, and although conceptually its damn cool, it fails where Juno excels... it's characters. Quality writing is priceless.

i think i made a similar, yet much more brief comment along these lines a few days ago. overwritten is the key word as far as this movie goes.

the characters don't have normal dialogue in this movie - they have idealized dialogue. their quips and clever comebacks are the kind of thing we might think of after a conversation is over, and then wish could go back and say.

i'm surmising that the writers for this movie probably collected a bunch of cool or witty comments from their lives that they never actually had a chance to say, and decided to populate a movie script with them. a nice idea, but it doesn't make for a believable movie.

I don't understand why people are saying that teenagers don't talk like this?? The interesting, eccentric, smart ones do talk just like this! I'm not saying they say the exact same made up stuff but they have there own type of language. Maybe I'm the minority here but at least in my high school they did! I remember people said "mug" in the place of any noun, or would just randomly yell Harliaght! (which means absolutely nothing). The girls would use things like flutterby instead of butterfly, and preckle instead of purple. These are only the very few that I can remember. The dialogue in this movie may be SLIGHTLY exaggerated but in my experience it isn't by much.

Also if you notice not everyone talks like this. Michael Cera's character never used any of the strange dialect found throughout the movie. Also I think that Rainn Wilson's character was just making fun of Juno.

A lot of people are saying the story was good, but I felt it did not have enough about her teen pregnacy. Her parents acted like it was just another day and didn't seem that shocked. The script didn't detail what's it's like to be a pregnant teenage girl in school, and the relationship between Michael Cera and Page looked fabricated (i know it was, but movies are supposed to feel real). The story was unrealistic and the script was trying too hard to be funny. On the plus side, great performances by Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner. I liked the actors in the movie, but not the movie itself...

Well, this is the same way I feel about many movies this year...Gone Baby Gone (how is it that I and like all of ten other people are the only ones who see the horrible directing and editing job in this movie) and Michael Clayton (how is this different from every other generic legal thriller?) for starters...so join the club there.

Personally, I really enjoyed Juno a lot. I thought it was a very good movie and it's going to make my top 10 list for sure. I can see what you mean about the dialogue but different movies have different styles and I thought Juno had a charming and different feel to it that comes from the dialogue. And taking that away would've taken away a lot of its uniqueness as a film. There's plenty of films out there that deal with these issues in a more straightforward dramatic way so I mean, I think Juno stands out by doing it differently. And yes, a lot of it did make me laugh. But I mean, it's hard for me to debate this cause you don't have much more information...you seem to hate on the dialogue but what about the story? I thought it was a poignant and honest look at teen pregnancy there...and you said yourself, the performances are excellent. Unlike Little Miss Sunshine last year, even though these characters speak quirky dialogue, I felt like they could be real people and not constructs - they have enough depth in this film to flesh them out even if they all speak the same kind of odd lingo. If the dialogue is the only thing you really hate on and that's enough for you to hate the entire movie, then I mean, there's really not much debating that can go on. You either like the dialogue or you don't. Matter of personal preference...ie: I fucking hate Napoleon Dynamite. I think that has the lamest dialogue ever and I didn't laugh once in the first 50 minutes (forced to watch it in drama class and we never finished it and I never intend to).

That said, you said your theatre didn't break out laughing. Well I saw it at the Toronto International Film Fest and it KILLED the audience. People were dying of fits of laughter throughout the film and it got a standing ovation at the end. So maybe you were seeing it with the wrong audience (I remember seeing Talladega Nights in theatres and there were a ton more laughs at the Borat preview before...there were maybe a few chuckles in the entire film and it pretty much dragged that film down for me).

I have to say that I had a rough time with this movie as well. It's not that I don't believe 16 year-olds aren't smart enough to know soupy sales or even coin phrases like "Honest to blog", it's just I don't believe they would ever say these things. I worked as a substitute teacher and teenagers just don't speak like this. It felt like she tried to squeeze a joke or smart alec reference in wherever she could. It just didn't have a natural flow for me. And the word "morose" also got to me for some reason. I'm not saying it was a bad, but i don't feel it was good either. I maybe laughed twice through out the entire movie. I don't know: To each his own!- Better movie than this out right now, Sweeney Todd...

I find it amusing that a lot of people who hate Juno for being too "pretentious" are naming No Country for Old Men as their favorite movie of the year. If that isn't the biggest hypocrisy of the year, then I don't know what is.

For the record, I liked No Country, but Juno felt way more heartfelt and sincere and just wanted the audience to have a fun time. No Country wants to frustrate and confuse you, so you'll mistake what is an otherwise B-movie plot for an arthouse film. In my opinion, that movie tries way too hard to appeal to snobs. Javier Bardem gave a good performance, but his character is nothing more than a terminator or Jaws, no depth at all.

1) Ellen Page. She was PHENOMENAL in Hard Candy and that has quickly become one of my all time favorite movies. She was the main draw for me to see Juno and I thought she gave another high quality performance. I gave both movies a hardcore netflix 5/5, but I did like Hard Candy better.

2) The other acting. Every single supporting actor gave amazing performances. Every one of them.

3) The script. People are saying it's too "quirky" or whatever, but I thought the writing was excellent, from the story to the dialogue, I just loved everything about it. Everybody has a different sense of humor though, and I'm extremely hard to please when it comes to comedies. For instance, another recent pregnancy comedy, Knocked Up, didn't make me laugh at all. I hated it, but I know a lot of people loved it. Now, when I saw Juno I laughed constantly through the entire movie. The whole theater was laughing too, it was a very fun moviegoing experience. The humor just really worked for me and Ellen Page in particular really nailed the jokes. Is the dialogue too clever and unrealistic? I thought it worked and didn't scrutinize it the same way I wouldn't question the dialogue in an episode of Seinfeld or Veronica Mars. I didn't care whether or not someone would actually say this stuff, but I loved what was coming out of their mouths and the delivery, especially Ellen Page's, really sold it.

And let's not forget the serious parts of this movie. I dug the dramatic scenes as well and found several parts to be very moving. Juno's conversation with her dad, the part where she expresses her feelings to Michael Cera's character, Jennifer Garner's final scene, all that stuff was extremely well done.

4) The soundtrack. These songs were all great and fit the movie perfectly. I definitely want to buy this soundtrack.

5) The directing and cinematography. Thought both were perfect and did the material and the actors justice by being just as excellent.

while i agree with some of your feelings regarding the film (though i did enjoy it as a whole), i have to agree that this article is fucking ridiculous. yes, we've all heard and, for the most part, agreed that the script has a few too many name drops of diabo cody's favorite obscure musicians and films. yes, the dialogue is a little too gilmore girls-esque. this isn't a revelation, and it seems pretty clear that the only reason you unloaded your feelings about the film was to get a few "finally someone said it!" responses. your opinion on this film isn't unique; ironically it's starting to become hipper to hate on "juno" than to praise its fast-paced, super-hip dialogue. please use a little more digression next time you get the urge to go "against the grain" and keep it to yourself.

I actually really enjoyed the movie. That said, it's been overpraised a bit I agree. The theater I was in actually chuckled quite a bit throughout the film, and me with them.

The biggest issue here was some of the lingo used. It's like the puzzling slang in "Brick" only closer probably to how kids actually talk. Having said that, Cody's script overdoes it a bit.

I'm not mystified that people like this movie. I'm just surprised to what extent they like it. It may be good, but it ain't no first- or second-place in the movies of 2007.

Thank God! I honestly thought I was the only one. I have never watched a movie so self-aware of how cool it was trying to be! This movie infuriated me!
Every "quirky" phrase, every "wacky" [link] Awful.

Remember when you watched cool little movies like Lost In Translation or Rushmore or Napoleon Dynamite, movies that were quirky because they didn't try to be. These movies had great characters that were brought to life by great actors who were able to put their own spin on the dialouge.

Juno never afforded its actors the oppurtunity because every actor was written in the pretentious, trying-too-hard voice of the screenwriter.

I get that your "out of place/diamond in the rough" main character is different, but is it neccessary to have her like only the coolest quirky bands like The Melvins and Mott the Hoople?!? Seriously, Mott the F**king Hoople?!?

Oh, and the scene that put the nail in the coffin for me...Juno walks in to the kitchem to find her father...a heating and air-conditioning repair man who named his daughters Juno and Liberty Bell...he takes one look at her and says, and I quote "Hey there larger than life version of my eldest daughter, why so morose?"

Morose? F**king morose? Who uses the word morose? Seriously? It was too much, too prtentious, too self-aware.

Oh yeah, and the choice of finding the "quirkiest" little independent songs from around the globe. Hey, I'm a girl with a guitar who can write 3 chord songs that don't rhyme! Awesome! Now go sing your songs in front of a bus, thanks.

I can honestly say that despite its incredible cast (Jason Bateman, you are a gift from God), this movie was one of the worst experiences I have even had...EVER...and I saw Jeepers Creepers 2 and Dude, Where's my Car in the same day.

Hopefully this movie will be snubbed at the Oscars just like it was at the Golden Globes and then it will be forgotten and hopefully then all the copies of it will be put in that smae gigantic warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark and then all the overly self-important film geeks will remember that No Country for Old Men, The Orphanange, There Will Be Blood and Once also came out last year and they can go back to discussing those films loudly at Starbucks instead of the this piece of sh*t.

In the end, and I know this is an easy joke, but I think that this little pregnancy flick should've been aborted.

You just have to get past some of the stylistic excesses. The first ten minutes of Juno sucked. I hated, hated, hated the whole scene with Rainn Wilson. And I hated how she shouts "Thundercats are go!" when her water breaks. Ugh.

But you know what? Who really cares? So a few of the lines in the movie are a little too quirky. The thing is, the script pretty much earns it because most of it comes organically out of who Juno is - a very intelligent 16-year-old girl who still isn't nearly as intelligent as she thinks she is. The story is very sweet and takes us to surprising places - Jason Bateman's entire plotline I didn't see coming at all, and he's brilliant in it. And for every groaner of a line, there are three more that are perfect. "I try really hard, actually."

Two more notes: (1) I wish people would stop comparing this to Napoleon Dynamite. ND was a story-less piece of dog crap. (2) No one was laughing in the theater you saw it in? Really? I've seen it twice in theaters - once in NYC and once in rural Pennsylvania - and both times the audience ate it up.

first off: i agree with everyone else saying that this should be posted as a "counter-review".

second: very true.

i squirmed for the first half hour or so of juno and thought of leaving. i only THOUGHT of leaving & didn't actually follow through because i had the misfortune of going to the film with friends & thusly, was in it for the long haul. when the lights came up we discussed our thoughts on the film and found that we had all wanted to leave within the first half hour. in its defense, the film did settle into a nice little groove after that and the prospect of staying became less of a daunting task, but the baffling problem remains that this undeserving film is getting outrageous heaps of praise left & right. ebert just named it his favorite film of 2007. seriously, ebert?? i honestly saw no more worth in juno than i did in napoloeon dynamite or superbad. fun, funny & off-kilter comedies, true, but best film of the year / oscar-worthy? maybe in a year where there weren't many notable films coming out, but not a chance in 2007. juno = no country for old men? juno = zodiac? sweeney todd? hell, juno = knocked up? no, no, no, a thousand times no.

the most obnoxious part that stayed with me after the lights came up was the image of a williamsburg-style hipster chick sitting at her computer, typing away & thinking about how clever what she just wrote was while i watched the film - authentic character development / interaction be damned! (i should note that this is the same way i feel whenever i watch kevin smith's films - smith just typing away, incredibly pleased with himself) "it's about a taboo topic! i'll just throw in some hipster slang, reference obscure pop culture and show off my knowledge of old punk / garage bands and this thing will practically write itself! hehehe... sonic youth is tame compared to iggy & the stooges - classic! now for the big scene decisions: should i have juno mouthing her sherlock holmes pipe while saying this or talking on her *giggle* burger phone? maybe i could have some more unbearably cutesy moldy peaches songs playing in the background while she's talking on her burger phone! in a recliner on someones front lawn while drinking sunny delight!! that's it! i've struck COMEDIC / DRAMATIC GOLD!!"

phew. sorry about that. just had to vent a little.

finally, anyone else bummed to see jason reitman go down the "napoleon dynamite" route and shamelessly ape wes anderson's style on this one? his direction for "thank you for smoking" was confident & bettered the already hilarious script. why did he drop that & decide to emulate (i.e. rip off) anderson for "juno"? pressure from "hipster chick writer"?

Look, I HATE high school girls. I mean, there are without a doubt the most explosively emotional people on the face of the earth. So with that said, I say this. The first half an hour of Juno is just that and mainly because THATS JUNO! But as the movie progresses she really grows up. I mean watch her friend in the movie and see how much Juno changes by the end compared to her. I think you almost have to be annoyed before you can begin to love this character because in real life, a person like Juno would have that exact same reaction on people.

I agree with you on sometimes feeling way out of the collective consciousness (I too loathe the Lord of The Rings movie) but completely disagree with your article (if it's even that really). You start off saying you saw this before the hype, as if that somehow gives you an air of credence the rest of the world doesn't have, but then essentially go on to say "I just don't get what everyone else sees in this" for the rest of it... That sounds an awful lot like you just don't get the hype and therefore don't like the movie.
Also, you start the article stating you liked Transformers, one of the worst movies of the year. I can't believe movie sites still sing it's praise... It's absolutely ridiculous. Of course, this site was kissing it's ass five minutes after the teaser hit the net.
Catiness aside, I really do get some of your criticism, the overly clever dialogue did sometimes get to me. And I especially get your first fifteen minutes, because I was thinking the same thing, not that I should walk out but rather that it was feeling a bit like a more skillfully made Napoleon Dynamite (Another film I feel is absolutely terrible) but once Juno starts to get into her pregnancy, all the superficial childishness of the film really slides away as Juno herself begins to mature. Sure, Juno herself is still really clever, but that's sort of the point. This isn't the "typical teenager that everyone could relate to gets knocked up and reacts how everyone would" it's the story of this one, kinda kooky fucked up funny girl and how she reacts to it.
All in all, I disagree greatly, but I think it's cool you wrote something against the grain... I just think maybe there were other movies that should have had this treatment (Namely, Transformers, Lord of The Rings) but then the backlash would just be too much.

I completely agree that this movie was lame. I read about all these good reviews and everything and saw the hight rating on rottentomatoes.com and so I convinced my girlfriend to go see it with me and then 10 minutes into the movie I felt I had wasted my money. How good can a movie be when its main character is absolutely annoying. She is one of those people who are overly sarcastic. I don't mind sarcasm but on that level it's just annoying. The other characters were perfectly fine. As little time Cera had on the screen, he provided the most chuckles from me. I totally agree Mike, this movie is officially overrated.

Not only that, but the movie never addresses her pregnancy the way it should. We barely see how it affects her at school, her parents only pretend to be appalled, and Michael Cera is criminally underused and underdeveloped. Juno may not be the best picture of the year, but it certainly is heartfelt. And while the script is wisecracking, it is much funnier and wittier than most of the comedies in release. The performances elevate this movie higher, and seeing J.K. Simmons doing something besides yell at Peter Parker is always a treat.
The audience I watched it with seemed to be laughing quite a bit. And we all recognized the talent. What it really comes down to is that Sideways wasn't as good as the critics made it out to be, neither was Little Miss Sunshine. But when there are so few comedies on the awards watch radar these days we all need one we can root for. This year that comedy will have to be Juno.

I haven't seen the movie AND my expectations are not high for it, due mostly to the hype, but I agree 100% with Indy7solo.

Why is this an article? Why not a review? The article reads like an excerpt from Mike Sampson's personal diary. Or rather, one of the 5,000,000,000 posts on any internet movie message board.

I've read JoBlo's edict about the purpose of this site and the opinions inherent in every article, but those opinions usually tend to accompany some small shred of news.

EDIT: I should also note that my opinion of the article is most likely biased seeing as how any article that includes the phrase, "There are some movies you know you're going to love. Like TRANSFORMERS," immediately throws up a red flag for me.

I suppose we can agree to disagree.

I saw this film a few weeks back and the only thing I can really say about it is that I went in optimistic and I left feeling the same way.

The movie didn't go above or beyond what I thought it was going to be and that was fine in my bood. The only true complain I have with this movie is ELLEN PAGE. Whoever wrote the script wrote Page's character to be way too sarcastic and obnoxious. I can handle a snarky teenager in a comedy, but they way they wrote her character was almost like they were trying to justify her immaturity as being mature.

Overall Juno was a pleasant film to watch and I will probably rent it when it comes out for another viewing; but I'm telling you right now this film is not Oscar worthy, the actors are and that's about it....minus Page.

I think what makes Juno a good film is that it is endearing. It's a movie that somehow finds a balance between indy and commercial film. The hipster dialogue is over-written but it felt that Diablo Cody found her character after the first few pages and in turn the actors found their characters. It's an endearing film with likeable characters. I said it to myself that more movies should be made the way Juno is made. It's like the "Little Miss Sunshine" of this year.

I didn't expect to like this movie so when I got dragged to it I felt the same way you did... but I enjoyed it because I thought it would be even worse. What I hope comes out of it is the same thing as you - an Academy Award nom for Garner. I've never liked her before but man did she blow me away in this one!

I agree that the style and dialouge might rub some people the wrong way, and that is fine. What I'm curious is why not contribute a counter-review for the site, rather than making a call to arms for all the haters just so you can feel vindicated with your disapproval of a film. It is ok to not like something that is loved by a mass consensus. And instead of trying to rain on its parade and purposefully damage the film in the online community, you could have simply stated your thoughts in a review and let the readers react, rather than asking for the negativity to come out.

I feel the same way as the positive-yet-negative reviews. The film is overly clever and oft times beyond implausible. But... it's kind of like the best case scenario. All the things that you wish you could say right under the circumstances. Like when you look back and think to yourself: "I should've said that."

I also like to point out to people that the only character in the movie who ISN'T given snappy one liners and made overly clever is Jennifer Garner's character of the yearning to be a mom but barren working woman. What statement this is trying to make is fairly obvious.

I don't agree with the hype. There are a lot of problems. But sometimes a movie can have value without being a masterpiece. Not all food is steak. Doesn't mean a hamburger (phone, ha! Couldn't resist) won't do the job of filling your stomach.

FINALLLY... thanks so much. Juno for me is one of the most overrated movies ever (besides the Departed, LOTR and some other stuff).

Juno just came out in Australia today and I'll be seeing it soon. Though it's nice to see a differing opinion to go with the acclaim.

I agree with this article for the most part. Juno is a pretty good movie overall, but it's not that funny and the first 15 minutes are horrendous.
