McFarlane talks Venom Aug. 6, 2008

Though Sony is hot to spin SPIDER-MAN 3 villain Venom off into his own movie, Venom creator Todd McFarlane isn't so hot on the idea (UPDATE - a few readers have written it to clarify that McFarlane is credited as co-creating Venom with writer David Michelinie). Speaking to Newsarama, McFarlane says that making movies where the villain is the lead character isn't smar. "Those don't work. The reason they're so cool as a bad guy is because they're bad. And as soon as you try to give too much humanity to them, then you go, 'NO!'" McFarlane cites the infamous Halle Berry CATWOMAN as an example of how trying to spinoff a villain into a hero can result in a disaster. He also says that any new cinematic incarnation of Venom should have more of "a creep factor" than the Topher Grace version. The proposed VENOM movie might not ever happen and McFarlane isn't sure if it ever can. "I don't know if you can have a movie about a guy who goes out there and maims everybody and wins all the time." Good point and considering the dude created Venom, he should know a little bit about it. Do you think VENOM is a good idea? I was all pumped up to see the character in SPIDER-MAN 3 but was colossally let down when I saw the final product.

Extra Tidbit: When McFarlane created Venom he had no idea there would be a human inside the suit.

It may not get made, but having the villain lead is not impossible; anybody ever watch Dexter? You're feelings are always split; do you like the serial killer because he kills other serial killers, or do you hate him because no matter what the cause, it's wrong? Venom's the same; he turned "good" in his own maniacal sense...

The only way I could see it working is if there are two of them; the normal villain we know and then maybe a secondary one coming from the same place hunting him down. You could delve into a back story of their existence then and learn that not their entire race is maniacal as him. But that is so similar to other stories it would probably suck anyway.

or just wait 10-15 years and restart the franchise. and i'm not really one for that either. batman, so far, has been the only restarted franchise that was better than the original.

Venom is cool. But he is a villian. They had to make him like the Punisher for it to work. That'd be lame.

Spiderman 3 sucked.

agree with McFarlane. Frankly, it wouldn't get made anyway. Same reason why From Hell had to be changed so much from the graphic novel. Hollywood simply WON'T make big movies from the killer or bad guys point of view, Monster being the only exception. but i guess to have it from the villains pov in hollywood, it's got to be based on a true story.

I'll admit, there were few points in life more disappointing than sitting in that damn IMAX theater for as long as I did BEFORE Spidey 3 started at midnight, and got that sh*tstorm of a movie. Personally, they should have cast someone else as venom, and the only Venom we should have seen in that movie was at the clocktower...yeah, I know it would have been a massive c*cktease, but atleast he would have been set up for his own Spidey movie and not rushed into this one. I actually wouldn't be totally against the idea if they used Venom in a different movie, like spidey 4, with a new actor and just pretended that number 3 never happened...thats what I like to do! And on topic, a Venom movie where he's a good guy can't work, like MacFarlane said...but a Thunderbolts movie...hmmm

McFarlane is pretty much dead on. And plus, this movie is pretty much damage control for all the fans who were clamoring for Venom in SM3. Marvel and Sony royally fucked up with Venom and now they're trying to say sorry. Too little too late fellas, this movie idea is just throwing Venom under a bus now.

Venom in Spider-Man 3 is the perfect example of fanboy wishes, paired with studio greed, destroying an otherwise decent idea.
It should have been clear to everyone that Venom's origin is far to complex to fit into one film. Especially in a franchise that took three films to deal with Harry Osbourne's (equally complex) transformation into the second Green Goblin.

I agree, I don't see any way they could make it work, and ESPECIALLY not with Topher. I don't have a problem with Topher as an actor, but I never thought it was a good idea having him cast in order to mirror Peter Parker like that. Spidey 3 was just not good, and it was because Eddie Brock and Venom were thrown in and handled so half-assedly. [Not a real word, by the way.]

Topher wasn't a good choice for Eddie Brock, and Venom just failed to impress. He wasn't done right, so we didn't REALLY see Venom in Spidey 3 anyway! So basically... Spin WHAT off?

As much as I'd like to see some justice done for the character on screen, I'm pretty sure Sony will f*ck it up this time as well. Venom's on-screen incarnation has been damaged to a huge extent, and it's gonna' take a lotta' hard work and a lotta' explanin' to patch things up with the fans. Unless Sony finds some way to do that, I don't think we need to see Venom on screen any time soon.

Venom in "Spider-Man 3" only sucked because all we saw was Topher Grace...not Venom himself. By using Topher too much, the creepiness and fear that Venom uses was gone.

Todd McFarlane knows his shit, not just on Venom because he created him but in general. For example, he understood how crappy the Spawn movie was(this broke my heart indefinitely).
