By now, I'm sure you've all heard the news that, starting with the upcoming award show, the Best Picture nominees will be expanded from five to ten. But that's not all the Academy has in store for us. While there were rumors that the Best Animated Film category would be shuttered (with the thinking that the best animated film would simply get nominated for Best Picture), that won't be happening just yet though another category could still fall by the wayside. There is a distinct possibility that you could tune in on any given year and not see a "Best Original Song" winner announced.

This year the Academy has set new standards for being nominated for Best Original Song. All eligible songs are graded by a scoring committee and only those songs which are given a grade of 8.25 (out of ten) or higher are to be nominated. If five songs score higher than 8.25 (the maximum allowed), then there will be five nominees. If NO songs get a score higher than 8.25, then there will be NO nominees and the category will be scrapped for that year.

But what if only one song grades higher than 8.25? Does that mean that it automatically wins? Not quite. That would mean that the next highest rated song would get a lucky bump and get nominated to compete against the other song. This is all done in the name of cutting down the bloat in the show and getting more people interested in watching again (and, I assume, most people weren't interested in those long musical numbers).

Extra Tidbit: The Lifetime Achievement Awards will be given out at a separate ceremony, also cutting down on the length of the award show.

c'mon, i think that the lifetime achievement award should stay in the "big show". to take it out and put it in a different show kinda takes away the importance and respect it holds.

I can't say I'm excited for the 10 best picture nominess but cutting down on best original song is incredible. Scores are one thing but a fucking song? I get it.. they're written for/about the movie it's in... but having 5 compete when you always know the popular one is gonna win is ridiculous. Half the time they all suck and then we have to listen to them 5 different times throughout the night. Even the audience falls asleep

I like the change of 5 qo 10 for best pics, and like the lifetime achievment award having it's own ceremony, but one of my favorite parts of the show are the musical numbers. They should instead make it that only 1 song per film can compete. Seems fair to me.

After watching those video game awards on Spike,
I realized there were a few things they did that made a lot of sense.
For instance, only show the most interesting and popular awards and any performances live. And then have all the other awards played for people on the internet, which in the case of the Spike VGAs, were the hardcore fanbase of videogames and they absolutely wanted to know who won in every category.
The oscars have been in need of some big fuckin changes for a long time now.
and lets hope to GOD they dont shove that annoying as musical shit down our throats again, while totally changing the way i look at a badass action star forever.

They could have fixed the category by allowing one song per movie. And, you know, not committing one of the biggest snubs in history by not nominating The Wrestler.

I'm not even going to PRETEND to understand why they're doing all this.
However, I'm still annoyed at Springsteen's snub for The Wrestler at the last Oscars.

The Academy is forgetting what they are doing. They are putting on a show yet they want to get rid of the music. I'd theorize they're some of the only stuff (next to seeing who wins) that keeps people coming back. Montages and those ego-stroking tributes of the nominations have to go.

So, again. They're taking a category that we generally feel has been messed up the last decade (note:not necessarily the winners, but the nominees have been weird) and they're making it worse. Instead of obsessing over one movie like Slumdog they should have actually given a few other movies songs a chance. Now, no one has a chance.
