Night talks Unbreak 2 Sep. 23, 2008

Shyamalan has been talking about a sequel to UNBREAKABLE since the movie was released in 2000 but sadly it's been nothing but talk. As has been revisited numerous times, Shyamalan was freaked out by the critical and fan reaction to the film and that scared him off his planned trilogy. While as recently as this summer Shyamalan was saying he wasn't interested, he's now saying he might be game again. He told MTV:

I believe in that movie, I love that movie, and I should just go start writing the second one...I’ve still been thinking about it a lot and wonder if it’s too late...UNBREAKABLE is the comic book thing I should do — I keep coming back to that.

So it's not exactly a declaration that an UNBREAKABLE 2 is definitely on the way but at least he's softening on his stance after holding a grudge against us for all these years. Sam Jackson also told MTV about what the sequel was originally supposed to entail: "I broke out of the mental institution. I’m out there doing stuff and [Bruce Willis] after me. It’s very cool. He still wears that rain thing, that windbreaker."

I would've loved an UNBREAKABLE sequel in 2002 but in 2010 I'm not sure I'm as excited anymore. Are you still down for an UNBREAKABLE 2 or 3?

Extra Tidbit: At what point during UNBREAKABLE did you start to catch on?

This is a must. Night, you gotta make this film. Unbreakable deserves another trip around the block. I want to see where it all goes. Even if its not a mystery. Just give us a good story and direct another amazing film.

It's probably more worthy of a sequel than a lot of films that get one anyway, but I guess he's have to make it without detracting from the original concept. As a self-contained film it's fantastic - as a trilogy?... parts 2 and three would have to be really, really good. still, done right it could be the ultimate deconstruction of the superhero genre - i'd be interested to see what M. Night comes up with.

Bring it on!

He needs to do Airbender first (and he really should only DIRECT that film), but he shouldn't release Unbreakable 2 any later than 2012. Bruce Willis isn't getting any younger.

First off, Unbreakable is possibly my favorite superhero movie of all time. I think that it pulled off the genre in a very subtle manner. Although a sequel would kick much ass, I think that it would defeat the purpose (in my opinion) of the original. It don't think that it could have that same subtle drama vibe to it.

An UNBREAKABLE sequel would not only be appreciated in my book, but long overdue. Shyamalan wrote the best comic book screenplay I've ever seen. It is an amazing tale that had the misfortune of being way ahead of its time, as well as a horribly misleading marketing campaign by the studio. This movie paved the way for 'HEROES'. Funny how that series all but apes UNBREAKABLE, yet it is considered outstanding by viewers and many critics. Shyamalan was the visionary who first saw the brilliance of putting a real-world superhero tale on celluloid. I hope he grants us a follow-up.

I love Unbreakable, and selfishly want to see the sequels happen, but the truth is the market has changed. After the Batman relaunch (which you might argue owes something to Unbreakable) we have even higher expectations for these types of movies.

The first one was made before we had a dark 'real world' kind of hero movie. Now we've got Batman, and soon Kick-Ass as well. If they make this sequel, it won't do well, and by that I mean it will make even less money than the first.

So while I will be happy if they make it, the trade-off will be the death of M. Knight in Hollywood. And that would be sad, even with the Village and all...

Night is incredibly talented. Started strong with Sixth Sense(though not his first) and Unbreakable which still stands as his best work. I loved Signs, the Village was...diferent, but he needs to know his audience before. I totally respectr him as a filmmaker because of his failures. I was once told, if you are not failing, then you are not being courageous. At least he is willing to try things and be creative and be different. He is in danger of becoming Tim Burto, where you se 2 seconds of footage and you know its a Tim Burton movie. I like Tim, but most of the timme, nothing new.
Unbreakable is Night's masterpiecce. For the sequel, he will have to up the Ante without turning it into Matrix Reloaded if you know what I mean. It would have to be a blend of Pirates 2 and Dark Knight. Really strong story with moments of levity and a gripping cliffhanger.

Which I think thats a good move for Shyamalan. Give him a good four years before coming back with an original story. Avatar should be epic though. I hope.

I'm not sure if Night still has it, but I think the pressures of not screwing up what is now a cult classic would be strong enough to force him to write something worthy.
