Nimrod on Predators
There's been a short list of names swirling about the internets as potential directors for PREDATORS, including Neil Marshall and Marcus Nispel. But as we heard last week, Hungarian helmer Nimrod Antal was the one who seemingly was at the top.
AICN got in touch with Austin neighbor and chum Robert Rodriguez, who's producing the project, and verified that Antal is indeed the man now in charge of the skull-collecting extraterrestrials. RR says Antal is "an outstanding presence, a great communicator full of ideas, and upon meeting him you can immediately understand how he is able to wrangle cast and crew and get the best out of everyone."
Rodriguez says it''ll be a "character driven action movie" and while the script is still being written (which seems dicey considering the release date is a year from this weekend), he gives a taste of the story: "it still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group)." Read what else the prolific behatted multitasker has to say on the topic RIGHT HERE.
Nimrod's films so far are the Screen Gems horror flick VACANCY and his excellent debut KONTROLL, a comedy-thriller set entirely in the Budapest subway system. His heist thriller ARMORED (which supposedly secured his place in the PREDATORS chair) has been kicked around the schedule but is due later this year.

Let's hope we actually get a character driven action movie.. god knows we need one after Transformers.

"Vacancy" is one of the best horror films in recent memory. It's horrific without being disgusting, frightening without being trite, barbaric without being cruel. It has characters who, rather than being patently stupid, do things I wouldn't have thought to do in order to escape their situation. It also has an ending that is bittersweet without being hackneyed.

In other words, a shockingly intelligent B-movie thriller.
Unlike the far more pessimistic and cruel "The Strangers," with its ridiculous slasher-film coda.
