NYCC: Del Toro's next? Apr. 21, 2008

At this past weekend's New York Comic Con, I had the pleasure of seeing Guillermo Del Toro in all his blustery glory at the HELLBOY II panel (a full report on that will be up soon). In between curses and rants against studio interference, the big man let us in on a project he's cooking up - one of his self-described "little movies" ala THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE and PAN'S LABYRINTH.

It's called SATURN AND THE END OF DAYS and thankfully it doesn't sound like the Governator will be anywhere near this... What he calls his final movie about "childhood and horror", it tells the tale of the Apocalypse, as seen through the eyes of a small child going to and from the grocery store. "What would happen if the Apocalypse was viewed while you were doing errands," Del Toro pondered. "You go back and forth and nothing big happens except the entire world is being sucked into a vortex of fire."

Del Toro also mentioned that he still wants to do H.P. Lovecraft's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, but is still waiting to find financing for the complicated project... Finally, he mentioned that we should hear a definitive announcement about THE HOBBIT and whether or not he's on board within the next couple days.

I saw him this weekend at Comic-Con and he is the man! I remember him explaining this picture and thinking the entire time that this would so be something to come out of his head. hes an awesome individual, he was droppin f-bombs left and right but was still very sincere and cool with his q&a from fans. The end was the best cuz he totally made this 15year old's life by tellin him he was gonna dedicate some of the hellboy 2 art to him. it was just an awesome experience to see such that del toro was such a cool dude! :-)

I want Del Toro to do "The Hobbit", so he can, as expected, knock it out of the park and get financing for "At the Mountains of Madness". However, in the meantime, this sounds like an awesome concept.

I am ONLY waiting for news for AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS as of now.

Also, I thought it was set in stone about THE HOBBIT. Hmh. Odd.

'At the Mountains of Madness' is still the one I most want to see. Seriously, what with all of the incongruously campy adaptations of his works thus far, Lovecraft must be spinning in his grave.

I'm still waiting for the day when "At the Mountains of Madness" begins shooting, that is one creepy as hell story and one of my favorites from H.P. Lovecraft. Honestly, while I dig The Hobbit, I would rather see del Torro go after AtMoM first.
