I bought my ticket to THE DARK KNIGHT this morning, and when I held it in my hand, I did that thing that sex is supposed to make you do. Gross, I know, but kind of awesome too. While I was eating a meat lasagna in front of the computer today, I found myself just entering 'Batman' in JoBlo Video to see what came up. What I came across was the trailer for the original BATMAN, which led to the trailer to BATMAN RETURNS, which then led to the trailer for BATMAN FOREVER. And it's amazing to see how far we've come. It's really fascinating to watch them literally get worse and worse. And then shockingly better with BATMAN BEGINS at the end. See what I mean BELOW.

BATMAN

BATMAN RETURNS

BATMAN FOREVER

BATMAN AND ROBIN

BATMAN BEGINS

RELATED VIDEO LINKS:
joblo - jack nicholson - trailer - tim burton - batman. superhero

Extra Tidbit: No matter how good Nolan's versions are, they'll never top the amazing scores of the originals.

Well I always get egged everytime I say this but Batman Returns is still the best Batman movie made IMO (though I haven't seen TDK yet which does sound fantastic provided its not over-hyped and its actually THAT good.) Mostly cause of the villains and the dark humor. Visually it was also more impressive and stylized than BB which I like.

But yes, watching these make me wanna pull out the old ones again. I really enojoy the first two a lot. BB was good and BF was just meh... B&R was a total suckfest though. Had the worst trailer too.

As I said in an earlier post in this thread, Kilmer and Carrey pretty much made Forever for me. Kilmer was a pretty good Bats/Bruce and had he been given a better platform, could've made an amazing one later on.

Clooney was a simple waste of a talent. He had great potential that was lost in a crudfest that was B & R.

But talking about modern Batmans..It seems we've forgotten about the old legend who was also great in his take as Bats/Bruce...

...that being ADAM WEST =D

I have no problem with any of the Batman films save for B and R , and even that one has a special place in my heart because it failed as a Bat film on every level but it's highly enjoyable as campy , moldy , cheese . One of the best bad films ever made and it features the most gratuitous usage of neon in any film ever made .

The first three are great , and they still hold up today . Keaton was and still is a terrific Wayne / Batman . The performance was mainly internal , but he did an unbelievable job of creating two very distinct personalities concerning his alter ego , something i don't think Bale accomplishes ( he's just Bruce Wayne with a costume , not the embodiment of Batman when he has the suit on much like Keaton was ) .

Don't get me wrong , he's great , but Keaton is still the best . He exudes a touch of psychosis when he is in Batman mode . Bale's take is the masterpiece theater method acting version , Keaton's is the working man's version , a truly dark and disturbed avenging angel with demons . Bale seems slightly annoyed that his parent's were murdered , you never get the sense of rage that boils beneath the surface of Keaton's Bat .

I love Kilmer take on the characters also , he balanced his pathos with his sense of duty effectively , and he underplayed the fantastical aspects when he was Batman ( even when he was surrounded by neon :) ) . He was smart enough not to come back for the fourth , but he could have easily made another great one if Schu didn't lose his mind .

So , the first 3 are great , the 4th blows chunks but is still oddly entertaining , BB is great , and no doubt Tdk will be terrific , but i do see a dismissal of the first 4 now that the series has been revived , and that's a shame , because it just means you'll miss out on some Batman greatness .

ps - Nolan has taken some cues from Burton's versions , even if people don't want to give the older films any credit . Remember the journey to the batcave in BB , when he jumped through the waterfall with the tumbler . Uh , that is a variation on the rescue of Vicki Vale and the subsequent journey to the batcave in Bat 89 ( the song Descent into Mystery played as they approached the cave ) . That scene is magical , it was the first time we saw the batcave in Burton's version , and the one in BB doesn't hold a candle to it .

I never understood all the hate for Forever. It really is not that bad a movie Everyone did great in my opinion. And Val Kilmer was a great Bruce Wayne and wasn't nearly as bad of a Batman as People say he was. I mean Dude, even Bale cracked stupid Jokes in Begins. "Does it come in Black". I mean come on. Batman was great for its time, Batman and Robin is fucking horrendous and Returns is just 'eh' to me.

..it's really obviously the beginning of the end for the franchise. For instance--Batman cracking stupid jokes ("I'll get drive-thru"). Kilmer is much better as Bruce Wayne than he is Bats. Let me say with no homophobia intended that the fetishistic crotch shots at the beginning of the trailer are just more than a little gay...and laughably gratuitous.

Jones' Two Face is also unforgivable, both he and the character deserved far better. And Jim Carrey's stupid mind-reading blender device; since when was Edward Nigma a mad inventor?

After repeated viewings, I find this movie can be enjoyed on certain levels, but wouldn't this have been a better flick if they had just subtracted Riddler, Robin, Nicole Kidman, the neon, and Schumacher and just had Batman facing off against Two Face? Maybe that's what the next Bat-flick will be like---one can hope.

Batman Forever was okay, Kilmer and Carrey were the 2 saving graces of the movie.

My Brother and I got a laugh from the Batman and Robin trailer.

Begins was great but The Dark Knight Trailers take the crown.

And Elfman's Scores for Batman '89 and Returns own all.

I agree with beatrixkiddo, Batman & Robin was the only truly bad film in the original four. Still, I won't lament its existence. It's an important piece of the puzzle that led us to the Nolan Batman universe.

As for the Elfman score... Ehh, I'm really not too fussed on it. It has its place in the over-the-top Batman flicks of the 90s, but to me it'd seem out of place in Nolan's version.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and I might get shot down but the only one I really hated was Batman and Robin. Micheal Keaton, no matter how old or lame will always be my Batman. Yes, I like Christian Bale, but Keaton! He was Beetlejuice for crying out loud!

They weren't all to a tee like what the comics were, they had that outlandishness but they just came off as a silly rendition of an animated series. But they did have their good moments.

Danny Elfman is an amazing composer even though I think he gets lazy sometimes.

It's Batman in movies! How often did you dream about seeing your fave comic book character in real life? No matter how lame it was.

Wow, that voice-over in the last two trailers was unbelievably cheesy. If they did that in TDK trailer I'd have second guesses about its awesomness. And Danny Elfman's batman music is some of the best film music ever, but I don't think it would fit right with Nolan's Batman. Although Begins was my favorite comic book movie ever, I still have an appreciation for the older movies, much like I can still appreciate Sean Connery as Bond even though Craig is a total badass.

And I've wanted to see Firefly portrayed in movie. Some major potential for epic fights between him and bats.

And Danny Elfman's score is 2nd only to John Williams' Superman theme. Bloody brilliant.

ugh that was painful to watch.. they did indeed get progressively worse. I disagree about the score tidbit... Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score fits the mood much better. BarryShaft was right in saying its a more mature take on the score. I agree.

I have always felt the same way about BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS.. they were reasonably good films.. but lets face it.. Tim Burton shouldn't have directed a Batman movie, and Michael Keaton, as much as I like him, shouldn't have played batman. Tim Burton is great at creating bizarre worlds and telling odd and colorful stories, and Michael Keaton is a comedian.

Apart from that, we all know that the other two were awful.. I did think that Val Kilmer played a pretty good Batman, but was stuck into a really shitty movie.

Forget the old ones though... Batman Begins is one of my favorite movies, and the Dark Knight.. well.. i've said enough.

Killer Croc and Ventriloquist-as long as he's not Jeff Dunham :) would also look cool on a dark version. Or probably Man-Bat to see how Batman would fight a flying villain.

Or in the end, a catfight between Harley and Catwoman.

Man the trailers for Batman and Batman Returns are terribly put together, I have a hard time believing those left a trailer house. The Batman and Robin trailer was actually pretty well done... Which is pretty ironic seeing how terrible it was.

I don't know, Elfman's Batman score is fucking awesome if not overly simplistic... but Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard put together one hell of a score for Batman Begins and I personally can't wait to see their work on The Dark Knight. Even if they don't have a "Batman Theme" I think it's still a more mature take on the score.

As far as the score, yes Danny Elfman is the man, however the new scores for the Nolan versions of Batman kicks a lot of ass.

If Nolan does indeed do a trilogy, what villain would everyone like to see? I want Bain to end the trilogy.
