Polanski erupts Feb. 2, 2007

Oscar winner Roman Polanski will next direct the ambitious and expensive epic POMPEII about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. The film will be based on the novel of the same name and, like another disaster flick TITANIC, will follow a young character "emeshed in politics and romance" before the volcano's explosion in the third act. Robert Harris, author of the novel will write the script with input from Polanski. Financing for the film will come from private funding sources as do most of Polanski's modern films. Polanski said in a statement, "It will be very dependent on visual effects," the first time the director has worked on a FX heavy epic like this one. The film is currently budgeted at $130 million and is expected to begin shooting in Italy this summer. Polanski confirmed that no US distributors have been approached about coming aboard the film and likely wouldn't until later in the process. Neither of the two late-90s films on volcanoes (VOLCANO and DANTE'S PEAK) fared very well with critics or at the box-office but could POMPEII be a major turnaround? GLADIATOR meets TITANIC?

Extra Tidbit: The infamous volcanic eruption took place one day after the festival of the Roman god of fire,Vulcanalia, in the year 79.

And what a coincidence we have here, because I just happen to loathe and hate those who defend pedophiles in long winded diatribes about their art.

Oh and don't blame me, we all know you were thinking of naked 13 year-old girls before I mentioned them... pervert.

My fear is not that it will be turn into a big blockbuster style movie all about explosions, but that in fact since Polanski has no experience making such a movie, it will be the opposite. We'll get 2 hours of teenagers falling in love during the festival the day before and then an hour of people running around screaming that the world is exploding, but never seeing it until the very end when everyone looks on from safety except the one main character who died. I normally wouldn't criticize so early in a project, but, the other Polanski arguments aside, I don't think as a director he can pull this off.

GrayCalx, you couldn't have worded your comment in a more vile, disgusting, and completely insensitive and unintelligent way.

You cannot compare Jackson to Polanski because, unlike the case with Polanski, Jackson's pedophilia has never been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt. Although I very much believe the man is guilty, the fact that we can't be completely sure with Jackson, yet completely sure with Polanski makes a huge difference, yet it should be the other way around because of this, where Polanski is vilified and Jackson is somewhat forgiven.

See . . . it IS possible to talk about Polanski's pedophilia in a mature, sensitive way.

As far as the movie is concerned, comparing it to Dante's Peak and Volcano is really rather pointless, as this film will be a period piece, whereas the others were set in modern day.

Oh, and thanks for putting the imagery of naked 13 year old girls being shot into the arms of a rapist director. That is certainly responsible imagery to be putting into the minds of the minors to view this site!

Don't take it too personally. I have always loathed and hated extreme and hateful sarcasm, and I always will.

Some how I don't think it was really the fact that those other movies had volcanoes in them that made them so unappealing, bro. It might have something to do with how dumb and cheesey and lame they were. I have a feeling in the end this won't turn out to be as comparable to those two. But that could just be me.
