Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis Jun. 29, 2009

In his last directing effort, Matt Reeves smashed the hell out of Manhattan with a gigantic monster.

Now the CLOVERFIELD director wants to take his predilection for creatures down a few notches with a Americanization of the outstanding Swedish vampire movie LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.

Reeves tells the LA Times he was "hooked" by the original: "I was so taken with the story and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror."

Reeves has switched the location to Reagan-era Colorado, but how will he handle the touching yet touchy tale of a young outcast who falls for his new neighbor, an unusual but captivating girl who turns out to be a vampire?

Fans of the acclaimed original shouldn't worry too much if you can believe Bad Robot regular Reeves, who insists he's not going to go all TWILIGHT and drag the characters into their hormonal teens. "I have nothing but respect for the film. I'm so drawn to it for personal and not mercenary reasons, my feeling about it is if I didn't feel a personal connection and feel it could be its own film, I wouldn't be doing it. I hope people give us a chance."

Extra Tidbit: The remake will be titled LET ME IN, the English translation of John Ajvide Lindqvist's original novel.

Does the DVD have incorrect subtitles? How does one know if the version they are watching has the true subtitles or not?

Hay044,

supposedly the studio will be releasing a version with the original subtitles. Their is no plan to advertise that version but it will be marked with the term "theatrical subtitles" in the spec section on the back of the dvd.

I don't find the original all that great to be honest, so I can't see how a remake can truly destroy it.

Everyone below me said it better than I would.

I just want to know, does ANYBODY know where I can get a copy of the original with the real subtitles, as opposed to the ridiculously ill captioned US release?

if so PLEASE shoot me an email. Im dying to watch this again. I just cannot stomach the bad subtitles. I mean, when Morse Code in subtitles doesnt translate to ...

As far as remakes go the only ones worth doing are: 1) older catalog films that have faded from the public consciousness; 2) obscure cult films that deserve a mainstream audience; and 3) foreign films that have not appealed to U.S. audiences previously. This remake falls in the third category and for that reason I support it in theory at least. Foreign films make good remakes because lets face it American audiences do not enjoy reading subtitles and dubbing has always taken away from the aesthetic experience. Now its up to the director to do something smart and fresh with it while keeping the creative integrity of the original. The devil's in the details as they say.

I have a feeling it will turn out like Quarentine/[REC]. The original good and the remark sucking.

sure to disappoint
The director just isn't going to have the control to do what he wants with a project like this. The violence will be amped up. The actors will be older. The subtle and not so subtle exploration of young sexuality will be excised, and we'll be left yet another disposable PG-13 horror flick. I love my country, and hate to say that a flick is too subtle for mainstream audiences, but then Tran2...

No.
There is no reason for this. The original is a masterpiece, it's readily available everywhere, it's subbed (and probably dubbed) in english. It's a fantastic film, and does not warrent a remake that will overshadow and spoil the original. Want to make money? Have a big marketing campaign and re-release the original with wide distribution. People will see it. This is going to be written off as a...

It's a fantastic film, and does not warrent a remake that will overshadow and spoil the original. Want to make money? Have a big marketing campaign and re-release the original with wide distribution. People will see it. This is going to be written off as a basterdization by fans of the original, and (inaccurately) as a Twilight ripoff to everyone else. Stop before it's too late, please!

wasn't a fan of Let the right one in

But not much of a fan of "Cloverfield," either.

I don't get it, I mean I seriously don't understand it. If he has nothing but respect for the film and it means alot to him, why insult the original film-maker and remake it. To me it seems like " yes, I loved what you did. It was so touching and it really moved me. However, I can do it better" It's lazy, disrespectful and cheap. To me it seems like " yes, I loved what you did. It was so touching and it really moved me. However, I can do it better" It's lazy, disrespectful and cheap. Someone else has already done most of the work for them which they actually put effort into due to the fact that it was original material. Here's a radical idea, I mean it's so off the wall it's practically ridiculous to suggest but how about...get this...what if....I mean stay with me here....imagine if you actually made an original film? Crazy right? I mean it's just nuts!! It might actually work.

NO NO NO NO BLOODY NO!
""I have nothing but respect for the film."
Then why does it need remaking. God, I hate America. (ducks the flags being hurled my way javelin-style) Or rather I hate Hollywood's cultural imperialism.

On one hand...
1--I loved CLOVERFIELD
2--I believe in good remakes, even if they sound like awful, awful ideas at first
3--Reeves certainly SOUNDS like he's passionate about this, as opposed to just being like, "Oh sure, this could be fun!"

On the OTHER hand...
1--I *LOVED* the original (along with just about everyone).

2--The original isn't even two years old.
3--This is a remake.
4--The original title of the book, IN NORWEGIAN, is taken from a Morrisey song, "Let the Right One Slip In" - and just by switching it to American, "Slip" is dropped, and now the title is even more butchered. (But on that note, the girl literally does say "Let me in" at one point, I think...)

My verdict? I'll wait and see what happens.

I have not even seen the original, though it is tops on my to-do list, but this is just another sad sign in movies today. Seeing a movie and loving it should inspire you to make YOUR OWN movie not rip it off and remake it because it was in a different language. You can't do this in any other profession, at least not so blatantly. I am graphic designer, I have seen tons of great stuff from all o...

I am graphic designer, I have seen tons of great stuff from all over the place that really inspire and talk to me, but I don't steal their work just because it was done in another language.

I don't even care if he makes a good film, it is totally worthless and total bullshit.

I was fully prepared to dismiss this as the absolute wrong thing to do. But I can't help but kind of support it when the man speaks so passionately about his vision.

Having said that, I do still feel it is the wrong time to consider this. At least as a full-blown remake (I take issue with the label "re-imagining" in most cases).

If he liked the movie so much.. leave it alone.

This is one of my favorite films. Remaking this would be a disaster.

Matt Reeves i will hate you for this.

I fell asleep while trying to watch the original 3 times ... thought it was mighty boring. I'm down to see what a different director can do with the material (which has a good story to it)

Many musicians have nothing but respect for Jimmi Hendrix's music. Does that mean none of them should do covers of his tunes?

All talented filmmakers out there, go ahead and remake whatever you want!

If it helps, think of these remakes as covers instead of remakes, reimaginings, or whatever. It may or may not be better, but it will be different, and nothing's wrong with that. Variety is a wonderful thing. That's true with music, films, and ofcourse, women.
