Robocop teaser poster Jun. 11, 2008

Source: AICN

When rumblings of a ROBOCOP remake recently surfaced, I thought ‘nah, couldn’t be. Hollywood remake a classic? Preposterous!’ But lo and behold, here’s proof that MGM is indeed going ahead with their remake/re-imagining/revisiting/ of the popular franchise. The photo is a very primary teaser poster for the film that was snapped up at the NY Licensing show and gives us an idea of what the character will look like—essentially the same. I wonder who they’ll get to play him? Any suggestions?

Extra Tidbit: Paul Verhoeven initially considered casting Rutger Hauer or Michael Ironside in the lead role.

Hollywood is all about trends, right? One hit, then everyone follows the same pattern. So if Christian Bale, Tobey Maguire, and Robert Downey Jr. have set the trend, that a credible actor can really sell an action piece... why not Russell Crowe? Honestly, getting him to buy the script would be entirely difficult.. but why not? Talk about bringing something to the role.

Your thoughts?

Don't see shit like this, vote with your wallet. Don't go to see it, tell everyone not to see it. The only reason nothing original is made anymore is because people will pay to see rubbish like this. Parents: teach your children for god's sake. Scold them for spending yuour hard earned cash on this kinda stuff.

On the other hand, the idea of a cop who is also a robot could be a interesting 'new' movie if done right. Just don't call it Robocop. Call it "Policeman That Is Also a Robot"
I'd see that.

Not a good sign.

As for Christenson, thankgod most of robocops emotions are played out visually and not a lot relies on the actor, himself. Otherwise, this movie would be about as interesting as Jumper.

NO ONE REMEMBERS THE ORIGINAL SCARFACE?!?!? It's hard to remember something if you've never seen or heard of it in the first place, which is, unfortunately the problem with our society's view on visual entertainment. For the general population, everything that is new is lauded, and anything that is old is shunned. In my opinion, the original is FAR superior to the remake. The story never gets trapped by the filmmaker's conventions. De Palma's remake took the basic story of the original and changed around some things in order to make eveything BIGGER and BLOATED. In doing so, he lost a lot of the impact of the original, his style eclipses the story. I've ALWAYS found Scarface '83 to be the most overrated film of all time. It's mind-numbing to say no one remembers the original (your acknowledgement of it proves otherwise). I'm sure many critics would agree that Scarface '83 is extremely melodramatic obnoxious, and bloated, unlike Hawks version.

I say bring it on. But I will say that there was a rumor spreading around from MGM that they wanted to make a 3D Robo film much like Beowulf. This poster seems to confirm that thinking.

You know, it's funny just how many people in my High School didn't know that Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, or even The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were remakes. I thought everyone knew about TCM at least.

However, only a handful of kids I spoke to even knew the original DotD and THHE even exsisted.

My point is, I'm tired of unoriginality. Sure, I'm open for remakes, if quality people are behind them. However, we are drowning in them right now. Not only that, but 98% of the remakes being made range from disappointing to absolutely terrible.

I also hate having to explain, in conversation, which Dawn of the Dead, Prom Night, Halloween, The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Amityville horror, [insert remake here], I'm talking about. Somebody will think I'm talking about the remake and by the time I explain to them that there is another film, made in the 70s called Dawn of the Dead as well, I've already lost them and the conversation can't continue.

And no offense spacemonkey, you seem like a pretty cool dude, but those are the remakes that everyone always brings up when defending remakes. What is that? 1% of all the remakes ever made? Sure they are good, in fact "The Thing" is one of my favorite movies of all time, but those are just a handful.

Hollywood has ALWAYS remade movies...hell, 1940's 'Gaslight' got remade in 1946! And Bogart's 1941 'Maltese Falcon' WAS a remake (and the original was released only ten years earlier, in 1931).

Hollywood has ALWAYS remade movies...hell, 1940's 'Gaslight' got remade in 1946! And Bogart's 1941 'Maltese Falcon' WAS a remake (and the original was released only ten years earlier, in 1931).

Besides, there'd be almost as many years between the original 'Robocop' and a remake as there were between Lugosi's and Lee's respective Draculas...and I'd argue that Lugosi's Dracula was FAR more iconic than Weller's Murphy.

So, if a remake's done well (as with 'The Fly' or 'The Thing' remakes), and not poorly (as with 'The Hitcher' or 'Psycho' remakes), I really don't give a rat's @$$ what gets remade. A good movie (or remake) is good; a bad movie (or remake) is bad.

P.S.

Both adaptations of 'Lolita' were weak: the original was too goofy, the remake was too languid...and both leads, Dolores ('Lolita') AND Humbert, in both movies were too old for their roles.

Are you whiners aware that you don't have to watch the remake? MGM is a pretty powerful company, but I'm almost 100% sure that they can't force you to see it.

Also, I'm pretty sure they're not going to round up all the copies of the original and destroy them, so if you have a hankering for a good Robocop movie, you can probably still watch your copy on DVD.

And I have liked quite a few of them. You know what remakes Im talking about: Carpenters The Thing, Cronenbergs The Fly, Snyders Dawn of the Dead, Savinis Night of the Living Dead, to name but a few of the good ones.

So I dont completely shut down the doors on remakes cause they just might turn out to be good.

And lets face it, half of the time, these new "remakes" arent really remakes at all, they turn out to be just another sequel. And we get to see our favorite characters go on a completely new direction.

Plus, you will ALWAYS have the originals to go back to. If you dont like remakes, then just dont watch em! Thats all there is to it.

The memory of the original one wont be erased...they will always continue to exist!

Robocop 2 wasn't that bad. It had Peter Weller for god's sake! Not to mention some amazing special effects at the time. Hell, even the director of The Empire Strikes Back directed it. The only problem was the script and the storyline. Half of the time it made no sense at all! Why would someone take a brain out of a criminal mastermind and place it inside of a robot programmed to help the police...right....

Robocop 2, while it has it's flaws, is a guilty pleasure. It's entertaining.

Robocop 3 is the anti-christ of action movies. I don't need to say anything else about that movie.

However, back on topic.

Remaking Robocop is a really fuckin' stupid idea. No one can replace Peter Weller (See Robocop 3...the anti-christ..) and no one can make this movie ANY better. Robocop is PERFECT.

Hollywood is done for. No originality. When Nightmare On Elm Street (the greatest horror movie ever made next to Psycho, IMO) was green lit for a remake...I just lost all faith in Hollywood.

Please, someone, stop this remake. Hopefully this will wind up like Revenge of the Nerds.

I just watched Robocop 2 (what I could stand of it) for the first time since I was about six and that and the third (which even as a kid I knew was awful) and I think if they have to make a Robocop movie it should be Robocop going back in time and killing anyone involved with the bastardization of his image.

Name one good Robocop film OUTSIDE of the original.

Go ahead.

Huh?

What's that?

Oh, you can't. You know why that is? 'Cause they suck. I thought Robocop 3 was embarassing enough (one of the worst films of all time, IMO), but those damn Canandians picked up the series and continued cashing it out in some cheap ass direct-to-TV version of the material. Wow, speaking of falling from grace.

A remake for this film does kinda suck, but hey, at least there is nowhere to go but up. Right? ... right?!

Fuck you guys.

I think this is even a worse idea than making a new Terminator film. How do they plan on making this movie any good without it coming across as extremely cheesey? Granted, the cheesy tongue in cheek commercials and super-brutal violence is what made the first one so good, but I can't see a studio greenlighting a hard R brutal Robocop movie with the camp of the original. I won't be surprised if this ends up rated PG-13 and they go for a dark gritty feel ala Batman Begins or Casino Royale. That seems to be the way most of these reboots are made. Similar to their original, just with more realism and lots of darkness and shadows. It's getting kinda old.
