Roth goes PG-13 Apr. 25, 2008

After putting his promising career on the line with HOSTEL 2, you’re damn right Eli Roth wants to make a PG-13 blockbuster next. The horror director told reporters backstage at the NME awards that he’s two weeks away from finishing a script inspired by the recent success of CLOVERFIELD and TRANSFORMERS. "This will be my first big-budget, PG-13, mass-destruction movie," Roth said. "I went total chaos and pandemonium." I love Roth’s confidence. He feels like all he has to do is put the words on the page and the movie is as good as made. But Roth won’t be going to Lionsgate, the indie shingle who made CABIN FEVER and his HOSTEL movies. Roth is bringing this to the “big guns” as he puts it. Roth also had this to say:

"I feel like I pushed the violence in R movies about as far as I can push it. I feel like I'm bled out. I wanna switch it up. Everyone I know has been saying 'When are you gonna do a movie my kids can see?' And finally, I'm gonna make a movie that 13-year-old kids can see."

What do you think? Does Roth have blockbuster chops, or will he be lost once he finds himself out of the hard R horror world?

Extra Tidbit: Roth hinted towards a big announcement on this film next month.

He IS a bad writer, of dialog that is. But I'll still follow him to daycare for this next flick.

Good director, absolute shit writer...Might be good if he gets someone with talent to pen the script.

Thank god roth figured out that Trailer Trash movie was a piece of shit idea, I think he should make a r-rated comedy, the beginning of Hostel was way funnier than Eurotrip

There is nothing to make of this movie yet, but Transformers + Cloverfield? Unusual.
I can only say I'm not digging it right now because besides Thanksgiving, I've only thought of Roth as a talentless hack. Who knows though.

Yeah, this should be good, just what we've been waiting for. Obviously, the lack of success of 'Hostel 2' has screwed this guy up. He's basing his new script off two films that had great potential, but turned out to be pure idiotic trash. Get your head right, and stop jocking what other hacks are doing. Grow up, before your potential is nowhere to be found in your future projects.

Roth's a fantastic director. He's not I mean, what is a hack? Someone who makes bad films in every possible sense of the word? Someone who only does it for the money? Whatever people consider it, I don't consider him one of those. His films are wonderful. I am a huge horror fan, both classic and recent, and I love his films. They give me the feeling that suspense and gore gave me as a kid. They're not "boo scare" horror, but they're great. He's a horror geek, a movie geek, and he makes movies that he knows he would've wanted to see at our age. Or still would want to see. And it works for a lot of us.

You may think he is a hack, but he is one of the greatest modern horror directors to some of us. Or maybe just me, but I am pretty sure there are more of us.

Having seen neither of the HOSTEL films (nor having much interest to change that), I can't quite say I'm excited or annoyed.

But really: "EVERYONE he knows has been saying 'When are you going to...?'" Really? Everyone?

So much for TRAILER TRASH, I guess. And CELL, for that matter (I seriously DOUBT it could be damped-down to being PG-13...that is, unless he films it to be rated-R or beyond, *then* cuts it down to 13).

Why am I even talking about this?

His comments about how no one saw his film because of pirating just PO'd me more. How about the fact that it sucked! He will be non-existent in 5 years anyway, directing the likes of Sci-fi channel stuff anyway. Screw Roth.

I've always wanted to see if Eli Roth or Rob Zombie could make movies that are devoid of blood and gratuitous nudity and profanity.

I can't wait to see what Eli Roth comes up with. It may not be the best product that could have been made, but he gets major kudos from me for actually attempting to veer away from hard-R territory.

I am hoping for the best, but anticipating the worst.

Can't be any worse than Nick Palumbo, at least... ugh.

.. it's an interesting question. But, even though Eli is bound to get some hate from this real quick, I have to say that I respect Roth actually attempting to stretch his legs. It sounds like, at least, that this will be a big departure from the Hard- R trap that many directors (Rob Zombie, Alexandre Aja) don't seem to want to leave.

Then again, Roth always talks a lot, but his films are nowhere near as good as he makes them out to be. I guess we’ll wait and see, but I’ll keep an open mind until we hear more about this. I've always thought Roth was a decent director, he's just made some terrible movies.
