Saw V release date Dec. 11, 2007

Saw IV Ever since the release of SAW II, we've been wondering about the release of SAW V. Namely, whether we'd be having a fourth sequel to the SAW franchise next year or whether they'd take a year to rest before they gave us another four movies back to back. Of course, the franchise is an enormous cash cow so we should have figured Lionsgate would keep pumping yearly installments until they stopped opening at number one, which at this point seems to be around SAW XXV or SAW XXVI. All this is to say that the David Hackl directed and Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton scripted SAW V has got itself a release date, at least according to Maple Pictures, Lionsgate's Canadian distribution arms, and its October 24th, 2008. It's coming, folks, and it'll keep coming for the foreseeable future. Thanks to Roger for the heads up!

Extra Tidbit: How long do you guys think they'll realistically keep this going? 8? 9?

Even if the Theatrical releases fall off, you know they'll keep this thing going on DVD for the next 20 years. Sequels, prequels, etc. They'll probably stop using number eventually though.

People must not be paying attention. How exactly did Saw III wrap things up? We still didn't know what had happened to Eric Matthews--whether he was alive or dead. We didn't and still do not know what happened to Dr. Gordon, Daniel (Matthews' son), etc. There were A LOT of things completely up in the air. That's what I don't think people are getting here. This isn't Friday The 13th where it's just going to keep going on and on. There is a specific path that it has taken and over the next two movies everything is going to be resolved and it VI will be the finale. People seem to think a series should end with everything up in the air.

I've tried to come up with logical explanations for why we need SAW V and VI, other than "it makes money," which I know, is part of the business. I've tried to tell myself that maybe they'll come up with new ideas, but sadly, that's like telling myself that the earth will become square, which is basically pointless because obviously it won't happen. At least, I hope the earth doesn't become square. That'd be kinda weird.:)

I've been enjoying the franchise from the git-go, and you know why? Not because of how yucky they get - in fact, I mostly dislike movies so dependant on gore for their scares - but because they are SO plot-heavy. With each subsequent movie, you can't see the previous movies the same way again; each movie adds a whole new bunch of twists in new directions AND manages to reveal that there were twists where you weren't even thinking of looking. That's some good writing there, and that's why I didn't mind the open-ended double-take ending of SAW IV; I just knew that SAW V was going to come someday, and that would mean further revelations.

All said and done, I *do* hope there's only one more movie after V, *NOT* because the franchise is getting old, and not even because I'm worried about it starting to suck (but of course that would be bad)...but because if they can wrap up the entire story in a 6-movie span, I'll think this is the most successful and well-organized horror movie franchise EVER.

Twisted Pictures, I hope you were reading that - make it 6, and make 'em ROCK!

Saw III ended it all, so I knew IV would suck, which it did! They won't stop until they run this series straight into the ground, ala poor Jason.

I personally thought the third wrapped it all up, but when you make the money you make with the dinky budget why not make more? It is basic business! Besides as far as sequels go this isn't a terrible one.

I think the real question is by what number to they drop the numbering system and start adding shitty subtitles (i.e. "Saw: No Mercy" or "Saw: Retribution")? I say around 7 or so.

I was mad about how IV ended. It was amazing, but I was mad. I got even more pissed when I read about the 2 year hiatus because there was no way I was waiting that long for answers.

That being said, even to those none movie buffs out there, which is the general public, I thought the 2 year thing was dumb, because keeping the movies fresh in peoples minds was a smart move, by taking a year off, people would start to forget about the Saw movies and move on to the next big franchise. People will want answers and now they will get them.
