We learned a couple of days ago that filmmaker McG is developing an American version of the brilliant UK television show SPACED. And the creators are none too happy about it.

For the record, those original SPACED masterminds are the wonderfully demented gents behind SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright. The ingenious British show ran two 7-episode seasons, and followed an aspiring comic artist (Pegg) and a writer (series co-creator Jessica Stevenson) who pretend to be married in order to get an apartment meant for professional couples only. The entire hilarious run, loaded with more comic and genre film references than anyone could count, was directed by Wright.

Sadly, Wright found out about McG and Fox's intended remake at the same time we did -- he read it in the trades. Needless to say, he's a bit steamed -- while venting at his MySpace blog, Wright admits that he has no ownership rights or financial benefit of the property, but a courtesy call about the remake would have been at least polite.

McG has WILL & GRACE writer Adam Barr working on his McSPACED script in the fruitless attempt at bottled lightning. Perhaps they'll simply realize that what made the show successful can't be effectively reproduced for the TWO AND A HALF MEN audiences.

The UK show has only aired on cable a few times in the States and a DVD has been delayed due to music clearance and other issues, but you'd be wise to track down the show by any means necessary.

Extra Tidbit: I'm still amused that NBC tried to do a US remake of the UK sitcom COUPLING... which was a ripoff of the US sitcom FRIENDS. Yeah, hard to believe that failed miserably.

It's bad enough that they're remaking this, but it's even worse that McFuckhead never told Wright & Co. that he was doing so. There is no way in hell that this will live up to the original, and it's sad because most people in the US will have no idea what it is, and therefore assume it's something original. This is worse than the planned Escape from New York remake. Why McG, why? Why mess with something that's already perfect?

And if you don't have an all region DVD player (which cost about $50) by now you really don't deserve to see the original show, which is available at Amazon.uk. (region 2 format). Jog on.

Go direct another fucking Charlie's Angels movie, "McGinty". Leave the masterpiece that is Spaced alone. US remakes of hit UK shows are almost universally shit.

Of course, thus far there have been, what, three attempts to do a U.S. version of Fawlty Towers? And all three have, rightfully, long since been forgotten.

And that U.S. version of Ultraviolet never got past the pilot; nor did the U.S. version of Doctor Who (but at least Who aired, which is more than UV ever did).

Oh, by the by, the U.S.'s also eyeing Life on Mars.

I don't care if McG wants to go and make Charlie's Angels. Hell, I don't care if he remakes Transformers. But if he remakes Spaced, I, for one, will vow never to see a single movie of his again. Ever. And how could he not at least tell Wright, Pegg or Jessica Stevenson about it? Thats a problem right there. McG? Do. Not. Touch. Spaced. Or I will hunt you down.

Spaced was a brilliant show that was made better by the fact that it was Brits who were huge fans of American pop culture. That just can't be replicated. Plus Wright brought a really stylized look to the show that no American TV director is smart enough to match (McG earned some of my respect though the "Chuck" pilot he directed, but he can't direct every episode). Then they're going to bring in some obnoxious actors who just come nowhere close to Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson. Ughhhh!!!
