Spawn sequel talk

Like a lot of comic fans in the early 1990s, I read the first few dozen issues of SPAWN comics, watched the animated series and suffered through the abhorrent live-action movie. But comic guy Todd McFarlane isn't quite done -- he's hellbent (ahem) on getting another SPAWN movie made.

Although while discussing his intended approach, it seems that McFarlane basically wants to make a SPAWN movie... without Spawn. This time, Spawn won't be a former CIA operative who returns from the netherworld with living chains, bad skin and a thirst for vengeance -- instead he'll be a completely silent, little-seen boogeyman in a bigger story: "I'm not going for Freddy Krueger horror and I'm not going for Spider-Man action superhero," McFarlane reveals. Or doesn't. "I'm not even going for a guy who's going to sit there and talk. You're never actually ever going to see him in his cape or costume in any kind of direct light. It's just going to be this thing that's just going to come, and if it's there then buddy, you're going to have a bad day."

Hmmm. McFarlane (who plans to write, direct, produce and independently finance the project) calls his planned film a "reboot" and also makes a number of other questionable statements, including an uncomfortable number of comparisons to JAWS. Read the whole interview RIGHT HERE!

Thanks to 'Shaun N.' for the heads up!

Extra Tidbit: SPAWN director Mark A.Z. Dippé’s follow-up FRANKENFISH was a surprisingly fun low-budget monster schlock most notable for its quality carnage, special effects work and a delectable bikini-clad China Chow.

I actually had the pleasure of meeting Todd three times. The very first time I met him was a Dodger game where he was displaying his Mcfarlane Baseball Collection. When I met him I asked him if he was ever going to make a sequel to Spawn. He replied by saying, "Yes, I'm the process but this time it'll be more about Sam and Twitch and less of Spawn. As a matter of fact Spawn will be sort of like...

He might've changed his plans but I personally didn't like the movie much but I digged the animation. I heard he's in the works of re-creating the animation and I saw a couple of images and it looks awesome!

NOTE TO MCFARLENE: Nobody frickin` cares about "Spawn" anymore. You blew with that first monstrocity of a "movie".....the worst comic-book movie ever made.

McFarlene`s been running his mouth about a new 'Spawn' movie for years....it ain`t gonna happen.

Not sure what to think
I'm not the biggest Spawn fan or anything but that idea sounds kinda weird. I guess Spawn is McFarlane's cration, so let him do what he wants with it. It can't be any worse than the last flick.

How can he make a Spawn movie that doesn't feature Spawn? That's doesn't make any sense. Plus, I honestly didn't think that the first one was all that bad. At least the characters looked pretty good and the story was there.

Spawn needs a reboot
Well, Mark A.Z. Dippé's Spawn from 1997 was laughable and cheap, but entertaining, crap at it's best. The scene where The Violator (that fucker gave me a headache) is dressed like a cheerleader killed the entire movie

In other words: A reboot is very welcome.

The last time I saw the "Spawn" movie was, oh, about when I was 10 years old, give or take. And, of course, being young, I enjoyed it. But I haven't seen it since then, and I'm pretty sure if I watch it again it'll suck.

But I digress.

I agree with Doc Venture Jr, what's the point in making a "Spawn" movie WITHOUT Spawn?? What would the storyline even be? A bun...

A bunch of bad guys running around and see Spawns eyes or something in a dark alley, then poof, they're gone? It'll be redundant for me to say this, but this is definitely a shitty idea.

my opinion... HBO series sucked. The animation sucked hard! The comic lost what it had going for it soon as he quit penciling (although Capullo developed into a much better artist then McFarlane ever let himself become). His covers for Korn and Swollen Members... yup, sucked. His latest music video for that shitty Disturbed cover of a pretty decent Phil Collin's fronted Genesis the shit... as i...

His latest music video for that shitty Disturbed cover of a pretty decent Phil Collin's fronted Genesis the shit... as in it actually was shit (ah, you didn't expect that huh!!). Finally, his pearl jam evolution video was "OK" at best. Oh, and though it doesn't need to be said, I'll say it anyway.. the live action movie was terrible! So what makes him think he could suddenly make a good movie on Spawn, and even better, without Spawn. Personally, I don't mind the idea... it's his invovlement at all that screams "don't waste your time or money on this!" But his toyline makes some nice stuff... done.

i really liked the Spawn move (although it was pretty shitty) and i'm all for another one but i'm not sure about this whole Spawn going to be a very minor side character thing. still i'll definitely give it a look, could be great

Sounds terrible...
Why not make a Batman movie where he's not Bruce Wayne, wears a bat costume, or drives the batmobile? Because then it wouldn't be Batman. Sounds more like this is going to be a cheap horror flick with some japanese horror overtones ala Ju-On more than anything based on the Spawn books.

If they can capture the sickening awe of the HBO animated series in live action form, then I don't see why it couldn't be a kick-ass flick. Perhaps David Fincher's Spawn.
