Spielberg does Ghost! Apr. 15, 2008

DreamWorks has acquired the rights to the classic Japanese manga GHOST IN THE SHELL and will adapt the series into a 3-D live-action feature. Producer Avi Arad (formerly of Marvel Studios) was shopping the project around Hollywood where Universal and Sony were also in the chase. But Spielberg himself took a particular interest in the project and once that happened, it was all she wrote. Says Spielbergo: "GHOST IN THE SHELL is one of my favorite stories. It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks." GHOST began as a manga in the late-80s and was eventually adapted into three anime films, two TV series and a number of video games. It's unclear what plot the DreamWorks movie might take considering the different variations of the franchise all followed different story and time lines. You can expect the same covert ops unit in a futuristic society. It doesn't appear that GHOST would be a project that Spielberg is interested in possibly directing. I would expect his involvement to be similar to how he worked on TRANSFORMERS. Jamie Moss, who wrote STREET KINGS, is writing the script and can expect a couple of phone calls from Spielberg.

Extra Tidbit: In one of their rare interviews, the Wachowskis said GHOST IN THE SHELL was a big influence on THE MATRIX.

GITS is what got me into anime in the first place. If anyone can bring this to live action i believe he one of the very few.

Just hope Akira doesn't get fucked up.

I love Ghost in the Shell, not so much for the although excellent first Anime Film, but for the fact that the whole Ghost in the Shell universe can have an unlimited amount of good stories to tell. I don't know if you've seen them or not, but just the idea has a simple brilliance to it! Now that Speilberg is attached just makes it that much better. I as i'm sure many others know that if not for GITS, we would have never even heard of "The Matrix." I sure hope they continue "The Matrix" universe as well. Hell even if you just did a live action part of the first two segments of the "Animatrix" (The Second Renaissance that is) would be awesome. Although the story has been told, it could be easily fleshed out some more and made into an excellent feature film. Even those that didn't like the first 3 matrix films might like this story. Anyone else think that would be cool?

Tom Tykwer would be awesome, Alfonso Cuaron too, or even Mark Romanek.

The key will be casting Major Ksunagi (or whatever they Americanise her name to). It needs a relatively young, beautiful girl, who can act, do stunts and fights and is willing to do quite a bit of nudity.

Street Kings was pretty awful, in my opinion, so I'm not excited for that writer climbing aboard.

But in other news, the rest of these nuggets are just amazing. Can't wait :D

this is great news. i just wish spielberg would direct it himself. they had better find a good director, this project would be a dream job.
