By far one of my most anticipated films in the coming year is Spike Jonze's WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. As far as visionary directors go, Spike Jonze is well, um, the shit. When I first learned that Spike was tackling one the most eccentric, fantastical children stories of all time, it was equivalent to learning that Spielberg was making a film about the holocaust. It just fits. Unfortunately, the production has been hampered by rumours of incompetence and pesky studio interference. Let's just say the following quote by the film's producer Gary Goetzman is a welcome relief:

There was an Alan Horn conversation where he said his vision and Spike's vision weren't on the same page. We support Spike's vision. We're helping him make the vision he wants to make.

I must say it's rather refreshing that a unique director who clearly has a singular vision is being supported by a studio rather than thwarted. If you ask me, the hype-o-meter just increased on this puppy tenfold.

Extra Tidbit: James Galdofini, Forest Whitaker, Paul Dano, Lauren Ambrose, Catherine Keener, Catherine O'Hara. Now that's an ensemble.

Whoops...!
I thought this was talking about Spike Lee having final cut on his WWII movie....which interestingly has James Galdofini in the cast as well.

At least they didn't bring in somebody else to reshoot the thing.

I remember Horn's statement, which I felt was very much damage control, not supporting or denying Jonze's vision. At least Goetzman has gone on the record saying he wants Spike Jonze's vision on the screen. Is it final cut? Maybe not. A) This isn't news B) This is no way indicates that Spike Jonze has final cut at all, in fact it sounds like the studio is doing damage control and their company line essentially sounds like "We're doing this for his own good". If they were supporting his vision they wouldn't have made him reshoot the damned thing.

I don't know how to feel on this one.
It's damage control.
However, is it truthfully what's going on, or are they just trying to get people interested again?

Unless things go GREAT. Probably the last time some studio gives an arthouse director 100m.

Good news to wake up to. Im glad the director's opinion still counts on this project.

Thank God. Glad to see some support here instead of a butchering. I can't wait to see how Spike's vision will flesh this movie out. It's gonna be something.

Yes! I was worried here for a little bit when I read they weren't on the same page a few weeks ago.

This movie is going to be amazing. Can't wait.

Excellent. I was worried this film was going to get canned (if it hadn't already). Very excited to see how it turns out.
