By far one of my most anticipated films in the coming year is Spike Jonze's WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. As far as visionary directors go, Spike Jonze is well, um, the shit. When I first learned that Spike was tackling one the most eccentric, fantastical children stories of all time, it was equivalent to learning that Spielberg was making a film about the holocaust. It just fits. Unfortunately, the production has been hampered by rumours of incompetence and pesky studio interference. Let's just say the following quote by the film's producer Gary Goetzman is a welcome relief:
There was an Alan Horn conversation where he said his vision and Spike's vision weren't on the same page. We support Spike's vision. We're helping him make the vision he wants to make.
I must say it's rather refreshing that a unique director who clearly has a singular vision is being supported by a studio rather than thwarted. If you ask me, the hype-o-meter just increased on this puppy tenfold.

At least Goetzman has gone on the record saying he wants Spike Jonze's vision on the screen. Is it final cut? Maybe not. It's damage control.
However, is it truthfully what's going on, or are they just trying to get people interested again?
Unless things go GREAT. Probably the last time some studio gives an arthouse director 100m.
