A 3-D remake (or late sequel) to the 80s suburban horror treat THE GATE has been in the works for a while, but it sounds like it's finally ready to roll like a creepy little stop-motion monster.
According to B-D, the update has finally finished the financing process and will begin production in Germany this summer with director Alex Winter (yep, Bill S. Preston, Esq. from the BILL & TED flicks). Oscar-winning FX guru Randall William Cook (KING KONG, LOTR) was originally attached to direct, but he obviously didn't have a time-traveling phone booth.
The original fashion-dated flick starred a young Stephen Dorff, who discovers that a portal to hell has manifested in his backyard thanks to an unlikely combination of celestial alignment, deceased family dog, fallen tree, weird friend and heavy metal lyrics. The rift unleashes all manner of chaos, mostly in the form of mischievous little demon minions. You can taste a nostalgic sample below.

Between occasional features (like the underappreciated FEVER), Winter has been keeping busy directing BEN 10 movies and contributing to the brilliant/idiotic Adult Swim show "Saul of the Mole Men".

I guess they really have completely run out of movies to remake. It's only a matter of time before we see a freakin' Scream remake.
