They're arguably the two biggest science-fiction franchises in the world: STAR TREK and STAR WARS. And if you're one of the many who watched STAR TREK this past weekend you may have noticed some similarities to that other STAR franchise. The young hero, the old mentor, the warp speed, bar fights, exploding planets... While I wouldn't say that JJ Abrams' STAR TREK is ripping off STAR WARS, it's just interesting to see how much modern sci-fi is inspired by STAR WARS. Check out the comparisons courtesy of College Humor below!

Extra Tidbit: Does this mean that Kirk and Uhura are brother and sister?

I do admit, being a loyal Star Wars fan, that Star Trek was a damn good flick but cmon people stop nutting over it. No Star Trek film will ever surpass the greatness of any of the original three Star Wars films. NEVER.

huh?
Of course there are similarities but only because they're both sci-fi flicks...and that's where it ends. Let's not forget that Star Trek came WAYYYYYYYYY before Star Wars and already had a huge fan base before Lucas penned Star Wars. So no moonz...Star Wars was the more likely to have borrowed some scifi ideas from Star Trek. I'm not taking anything away from Star Wars because I like both, I le...

I'm not taking anything away from Star Wars because I like both, I lean more towards Star Trek though, but let's give credit where credit is due. Star Trek paved the way. At least Gene Roddenberry never sold out the way Lucas did.

I think there are some similarities. Moonz, how does that bandwagon ride? Good shocks? Handles well? As a complete story, the star wars SAGA is awesome. I want you to redo your thinking. Watch it 1-6 and you'll get it.

I my valuable opinion, the only reason we all liked Star Trek was because it reminded us of how awesome Star Wars used to be. Screw episodes 1-3, I want a redo.

that's a stretch
the problem with the video is that both stories are so classic.

Most movies are based on Joseph Campbell's writing: the reluctant hero who wants something and goes on an adventure to get it. that is the story of most mainstream movies. Period.

Warp Speed, For The Record
A) Warp speed comes directly from the original show, therefore, if one of the Stars had to have stolen it from the other (which is complete and utter stupid bs), Wars stole it from Trek. Also, can't we just love both? In my house, we grew up on Trek and Wars. Plus, Episode 3 was good.

I like Star Trek, I love Star Wars.

For the record morons, the two things are incompatible. The only thing the two franchises have in common is that they take place in Space and start with Star. Star Wars is a complete fantasy in another galaxy (guess how damn far away), Star Trek is supposed to be a happy version of Earth's future if we get our shit together and stop fighting ourselves and start kicking Klingon and Romulan ass. It is unfair because to most the last good Star Wars movie came out 20 some odd years ago, and the other side has a brand new movie which is damn awesome don't get me wrong, but Star Wars (the first one, untouched) is far superior by all means than any Star Trek movie. Also Star Trek doesn't actually rank that high to most of the Star Trek fans I know. Most put in at 4th or 5th in line.

Also I died laughing reading this:
"Star Trek's special effects were by ILM, ergo: Star Trek cannot exist without Star Wars."

This thread is silly, but I just have to write something anyways. :)

The thing is that Star Trek is a lot older than Star Wars (and Alien), and Kirk was a rebellious young man in the old version as well, so was Picard.

But I would not go so far as to say a ripoff from any franchise, if something, its like "the fire duece" said; a classic hero story.

I like the old Star Trek series and films, but I think this new movie is a well needed fresh and cooler way of presenting the franshise. And because ST have a connection to reality, which SW don't have, I do not think a comparison is in order. Even though I understand why some people want to.

The storyline is a classical hero myth storyline. So really Star Wars is a rip. And i didnt know Han And Luke "hated" eachother. Nope this is a stretch. Also Star Wars fans are probably just a little pissed that Trek got an awesome update and Lucas shit on his franchise.

there was clear wars influence on the new trek. which is fine and all, every sci-fi film these days is in some way influenced by starwars, except bar fights, exploding planets and crazy alien creatures, these were never elements of star trek.

Also, to be fair, they took some of Star Trek out of order to make it seem like more of a fit...

thats the tip of the iceberg... Star Trek has a number of scenes directly lifted from all 3 star wars and even Aliens.

Enjoy Star trek, it's awesome, but leave your brain at home.
