STAR TREK The folks over at the TNMC managed to get themselves a draft of a shooting script for this summer's hugely successful STAR TREK reboot and there were some interesting things left on the cutting room floor. Here's a taste:

Right off the bat, we have a scene where Spock is born. The thrust of the scene is Spock's mother Amanda expressing her displeasure with Sarek when he isn't present for the birth and then doesn't understand the emotional implications of this. One gets the feeling that this probably happened an awful lot in this relationship. The script then jumps to the scene where Kirk is born, which is where the movie opened.

Extra Tidbit: Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci, who wrote STAR TREK, will apparently deliver a draft of the sequel by this Christmas.

on dropping off kirk
It's not like the Enterprise isn't a military ship with a brig or anything, so it makes *complete* sense to go slow down, go out of your way, and dump off a guy in an escape pod when you're only in a hurry to try and intercept a ship that's trying to destroy a planet with billions on it.

It's not like the Enterprise isn't a military ship with a brig or anything, so it makes *complete* sense to go slow down, go out of your way, and dump off a guy in an escape pod when you're only in a hurry to try and intercept a ship that's trying to destroy a planet with billions on it.

That contrived plot (I use the term loosely when speaking of Abrahms' Star Trek) device (along with quite a few others) is why anyone that bothered to look past the lens flares, explosions, and shaky cam, would see that the movie was lacking in the story department. It was like a three year old with severe A.D.D. trying to tell a Star Trek story.

watch the movie again JesseNick! Spock does not drop him off to die. The pod explicitly states for him to stay in the pod until a federation station, which was not far away, came to pick him up. Where do you think old spock took young kirk when he found him on the ice planet.

I wonder
I wonder if there was a scene that explained why the hell young Spock randomly dropped off Kirk on an ice planet to die. And I also wonder if there was a scene where they explained how the hell old Spock happened to be in the cave on the same planet that Kirk randomly ran into. I wonder if there's scenes explaining how... nevermind. The movie made no damn sense.

The sequel should be a full remake of "Space Seed." That being said, the real question is who should play Khan?

good writers
Orci and Kurtzman are good writers...but hopefully they see that writing overly-complex stories can really backfire (see Transformers 2). It worked for Star Trek, but the story was waaaaay too complex in Transformers 2, and the movie suffered for it. Hopefully now that they have the thing set up, we will get a straight-forward Federation VS Klingons extravaganza.
