Wahlberg on Departed 2 Jun. 30, 2008

Source: MTV

Mark Wahlberg talked to MTV recently about the prospects of both a prequel and sequel to the Oscar-winning THE DEPARTED.

"We may do another one, because it’s based on a Hong Kong film ['Infernal Affairs'], and there is a trilogy. So we may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys... They’re [still] developing it... If it can be better than the first, then great. I’ll be all for it. I’m not interested in going for the paycheck. I love ‘Godfather 2’ but, then again, I don’t like ‘Godfather 3.’”

Sometimes I can't stand Mark Wahlberg (THE HAPPENING), but then I just remember THE BIG HIT and I fall in love with him all over again. Seriously: even though that movie packs some of the worst CGI and some of the most ludicrous subplots you will ever see in your life, I defy you to watch it and not have a good time.

Oh, and so long as Scorsese and Monahan are back for this then I'm definitely down with it - THE DEPARTED was an unquestionable masterpiece.

Extra Tidbit: Wahlberg has a tattoo of Bob Marley on his shoulder.

I haven't seen any of the Internal Affair movies, but if they can make a trilogy out of them than I say go ahead and do it with the departed (if Scorsese comes back).

Meh. THE DEPARTED was the most I've enjoyed a Scorsese film (well, that and SHINE A LIGHT), and Mark Wahlberg was one of my favorite people in it, but I think I'd only be curious about other films if Scorsese and Monahan *weren't* back.

And THE HAPPENING? It rules, and so does Wahlberg.

Peace out.

Sorry, folks, I have to go with the Departed haters. this is for sure one off Scorceses weakest. Nothing about had that 'real' and 'gritty' content I expect from him. Even by gangster movie standards this one doesn't rate.

Prequel, sequel... I'd rather see the further adventures of Henry Hill.

as for "unquestionable masterpiece"... i find that statement questionable.

I for one loved The Departed and agree it's an unquestionable masterpiece. But it's different enugh that I'm not sure how possible it may be to do a sequel. A prequel maybe. As long as they assemble a quality cast and crew, I'm down for it. Although i'd love for Scorsese to return, I highly doubt he would. Monahan i'm not sure about.

This may be tough to do, i've seen Infernal Affairs and the Departed i was cautious about it at first cause Infernal Affairs is an amazing movie, but the issue with the sequel to Infernal is that it doesnt have Walberg's character he's made up for the American version but has the biggest effect. *****SPOILER****

In Infernal Affairs Mat Damon's character lives, but Dicaprio's still dies the same way.

so i'm wondering how they could pull it off.

PS - The Big Hit is always awesome, i have the picture of Crunch in my living room from the video store

...that Mark Wahlberg is the only guy who seems even remotely informed on the prospect of another "Departed" movie. I remember one time William Monaghan even said he wasn't interested in doing a trilogy like the Hong Kong movies. But Wahlberg seems to keep the rumor alive. Now, since I don't have any first-hand knowledge about this, and found "The Departed" to be a fairly enjoyable movie, if not quite on par with the original, I might welcome another film, but I sort of doubt it.

Well, I beg to differ. I thought 'The Departed' rocked a hard one, and I consider myself a rather big Scorsese fan (I own most of his movies). In fact, I'd say it's one of his best. Hell, on imdb it has 8.5 from an average of 167,000+ ratings.

So, what's the damage?
