Weaver talks Ripley

The principals behind the ALIEN movies (well, at least the first two masterpieces) do love to taunt the fans with talk of returning to that xenomorphic franchise.

Sigourney Weaver recently discussed her iconic woman-warrior with MTV, and the possibility of seeing her on screen again. "There’s definitely uncharted territory for Ripley," she offered. Curiously, she may not feel the same about the Giger-crafted extraterrestrial, which she thinks has "become somewhat debased by this computer generated thing. I haven’t seen [AvP] but I just think if you overexpose the creature, that’s a mistake." Too true, my dear.

So does that imply that Weaver and director Ridley Scott would be interested in a Ripley film without the famous black killing machines? "We’d have to go back to the drawing board on [the alien]," she said. "What we’re interested in is taking the character of Ripley and seeing what other science fiction story we can tell about someone who has lived several lives."

While the prospect of Ripley's further adventures -- or another ALIEN movie that's not set on Earth and made by FX-obsessed filmmakers -- is intriguing, Weaver is almost 60 and Scott is 71 (and already working on a dozen other things), and James Cameron is busy creating new worlds and technology, so the unfortunate reality is that Ripley will probably remain in stasis while the Aliens are further savaged by inferior films.

I think it's time to put both franchises to bed once and for all. It really has run it's course, the antagonists have been exposed far too much there's nothing left to get excited about. I actually liked Resurrection and I'll stick up for it but does anyone want to see a near 60 year old Ripley running around with a pulse rifle again? It's gonna make AVP2 look like AVP1. Close the book on celluloid and continue on paper I say because any further directors attached to any further movies are gonna be third rate at best. No good director worth his salt wants to try and revitalise a dead franchise when there's nothing to explore. The Strause brothers I'm sure did what they thought was best but ultimately failed. The whole thing's gone very stale and should be left to rest before any more damage is done to it

It makes me giddy to know that the stars of brilliant films don't even see the half ass piece of shit sequels that are popped out after they're gone.

She speaks of AVP the same way we do. What a piece of shit those two movies were.

Would've been better if she collaborated with Cameron instead, but after all, Ridley started this franchise almost 30 years ago.

theirs so much left to do with the Alien though, how it was created, where it came from, the space jockeys. one day Alien will get this Dark Knight treatment and it will be done right.

Sigourney is a beautiful and talented woman who deserves better than to be stuck in a CGI crapfest cashing in on the Aliens name. 1986's Aliens will always be the best of the series.

Alien Resurrection was the first major balls up in the series - I'm a fan of Alien 3 and consider it a valuable part of the narrative arc, even if it wasn't the way Fincher wanted it. Bringing Ripley back as a clone wasn't the worst idea in Resurrection, but I do think it was a missed opportunity. If they'd brought her back as an android (a la Bishop) who didn't know what she was but gradually found out, for Ripley that would have been interesting given her experiences with synthetic humans. A b45tard of a plot twist to write well/explain away/justify but at least it would hold some relevance to the first three movies.

My idea of a great final Alien film would have Ripley fighting them on earth. My idea of a great final Alien film would have Ripley fighting them on earth. The films to me always seemed to represent the problem of what Eisenhower warned of a "military industrial complex", which is to say corporations taking the place of governmental duties; i.e. Blackwater, Haliburton, etc. But it lead me to wonder what if the company in the film(s) managed to create a device which could control and deploy the alien, and use it as a military weapon. They build this massive underground facility with various terrain and climates; which inevitabley produces different adaptibilities in the species. Ripley's shuttle is found, ALIEN 3/ 4 was just a dream, and shes brought back to earth; teaming up with protestors who idolize her to stop the release of this new "weapon". They invade the building with the intent blowing up the underground facility. Ripley intow carries the bomb and gets thrown into the underground facility during a scuffle. A alien is released haphazzardly during a shoot out between the feds and protestors in the main lobby which contains a massive glass tank with a few swimming aliens.; as Ripley runs through the underground facility that contains a mock New York, a suburban home'; etc. My final shot would be of Ripley in a single beam of light coming from an exit above; all around her are aliens coming out of the dark. At the last minute she looks up and detonates(?) the bomb; destroying everything.

I'm hip to this news!
Happy Annivesary H.R. Giger Museum! Beyond Aliens, Giger has created some of the most enduring images in art. Kudos!

Alien: Brilliant
Aliens: Excellent
Alien 3: Good
Alien Resurrection: Awful

Don't get me started on the AVP movies. Sigourney, you deserve better.

i can agree with Weaver that showing the aliens every 30 seconds like in the AVP films is a mistake, i would however love to see her back as Ripley. Hopefully they'll come up with some way to bring her and the rest of the surviving cast of Alien Resurrection back (including Ron Perlman). There are plenty more aliens in the universe for her to encounter, although they should be cautious, once they took the aliens out of Pitch Black, Riddick became a very uninteresting film/character.

They overexposed the aliens and used CGI in Alien Resurrection, which she co-produced, so I don't see what she's complaining about. Regardless, I'm kind of tired of the franchise anyway. Bring on Avatar!

I agree that the first two films are the only ones worth writing home about, but I don't think people should consider the third one a total disaster. If you remember ALIEN 3 was directed by a then newcomer David Fincher; then Brad Pitt saw the film and got him to direct SE7EN and the rest, as they say, is history. So when you think about it, it wasn't ALL that bad.

But, as badass as she is, I don't want to see Ripley unless it involves some xenomorph action.

I agree with her on the overexposure thing. The Alien will never be cool again in a new movie. The fact that Cameron was able to make it cool was a miracle in itself. But I don't really see the point in taking Ripley on other adventures. Why even call her Ripley at that point? Seems like something more suitable for a comic run.

they should just remake Alien3. I hope that doesn't sound naive. But the first two are masterpieces and if they can restart an entire franchise I don't see why they can't just remake 1 sequel.

they really need to explore the mythology of the Colonial Marines

It's called ALIEN . . . not Ripley. Ripley is one of the most iconic science fiction heros, but they essentially killed the character at the end of Alien 3. While I appreciated her performance in 4, that wasn't Ripley. And though she was surrounded by Aliens, without a sense of danger, the movie was incredibly limp.

There are only 2 options (that I can see) left. Script by Cameron, Directed by Scott, and starring Weaver.

Take off and nuke the entire franchise from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
