WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

"This
is it" beats "Paranormal"

So let me get this straight: "Hollywood"
thought it made sense to release Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 in late
August, release the highly praised Halloween-themed TRICK 'R
TREAT straight to DVD and release the Michael Jackson
concert movie during the first weekend since 1998 in which October
31st actually falls on a Saturday?!? Wow. And these are the
same peeps green-lighting shit like OLD DOGS and DISASTER MOVIE,
right? [Note: In case you haven't guessed, I'm in a
"Hollywood sucks" mood today].
Bitching aside, Michael Jackson's THIS IS IT
apparently disappointed forecasters who thought the film would
gross about $40M this weekend. The film has made over $100M
worldwide since its debut on Wednesday (Japan led foreign
territories with $10M), but might not be the great success that
many had hoped (Not sure, but perhaps there has been a little too
much Jackson coverage in the media already? Just a thought).
The same might also be said about the most recent
SAW movie, which despite getting better reviews than previous
installments, is likely gonna finish with the least total
dollars by any SAW movie (SAW- $55M, SAW 2- $87M, SAW
3- $80M, SAW 4- $63M, SAW 5- $57M). Maybe the
filmmakers will take a year off next year? Maybe?? Naaaaah!
The "indie flick" of the year,
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, continued its winning ways over the Halloween
weekend (props to Paramount for the amazing marketing job on this
film to boot), adding another $17M to its coffers, which now total
close to $85M (for those not yet aware, the film only cost about
$15,000 to make). Despite finishing in 16th place with about
$500,000, BOONDOCK SAINTS 2 actually managed an impressive $6,800
per theater average in the 68 theaters in which it was released,
likely promising a wider release at some point.
Next weekend sees the release of 4 new releases
including DONNIE DARKO director Richard Kelly's return to the big
screen with THE
BOX starring Cameron Diaz, the latest George Clooney yuck-fest
entitled THE
MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS (which
our man Chris Bumbray LOVED!), Robert Zemeckis' return to the
world of strange animated characters in yet another round of A
CHRISTMAS CAROL, as well a creepy looking movie starring Milla
Jovovich called THE
FOURTH KIND (and if you can convince me of a valid reason
why the studio didn't release this movie THIS past weekend, I'll
send you a crisp new dollar bill....makes no sense to me!!). What
film do you think will be #1 at the box-office next
weekend? VOTE
