WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

Audiences pay to see world end!

Looks like audiences were ready to see the world get mashed up by director Roland Emmerich again, as 2012 blasted into the top spot with $65M in its first three days of release alone. The film managed to make $225M worldwide in that same period, and had the 2nd highest opening for a "disaster movie" since Emmerich's own THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW opened with $69M back in 2004 (see the full list of top "disaster movie" openings HERE -- to note, Emmerich directed 4 of the top 5).

Last week's #1 movie, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, also held up quite well this weekend, losing only 25% of its audience from last weekend, and crossing the $60M after only 10 days of release. Looks like this flick will ape Zemeckis' previous mo-cap style X-Mas flick, THE POLAR EXPRESS and spread the love throughout the holiday season. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY also continued its storied success as it broke through the $100M mark.

But once again the big story of the weekend came from a smaller flick entitled PRECIOUS (I REFUSE TO ADD THE FILM'S STUPID SUBTITLE MENTIONING THE BOOK AND ITS AUTHOR). The film opened with a stupendous $100,000 per theater average last weekend, but couldn't crack the top 10 because it was released in only 18 theaters. This weekend, the studio jacked that total up to 174 theaters (still an extremely low figure), and the film rose into the top 10 and a 4th place finish -- with a still-impressive $35,000 per theater average (2012 had an average of $19,000 per theater).

Michael Jackson's THIS IS IT finally seems to be losing some steam, dropping into 5th place after three weeks of release (although it managed to become the all-time top-grossing music documentary, passing the $65.3 million made by the MILEY CYRUS concert movie last year), while THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS managed to hold on to its 3rd place spot from last week, while adding another $6M to its total (the film has already made its budget back). The one other new release of the week, PIRATE RADIO, managed to scrape up about $3M and an 11th place finish.

The two films to drop out of the top 10 this week include WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE ($73M) and ASTRO BOY ($18M). Oh, BOONDOCK SAINTS 2 also managed to jump from 21st to 14th place this week, as the film added another 146 theaters to its theater count (now 251 theaters in all). The film has grossed close to $3M in three weeks of limited release.

Next weekend sees the release of 3 wide releases including a "little film" you might've heard about here and there, entitled NEW MOON starring pothead Kristen Stewart and hottie Robert Pattinson, PLANET 51, an animated film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (sigh) and THE BLIND SIDE, the latest in Disney's arsenal of sports-themed films based on true stories that will make you cry (doh, apparently it's WB)-- starring a blonde Sandra Bullock and some country singer. Last year, the original TWILIGHT movie opened with $70M and ended up making $191M domestically when all was said and done. How much $$$ do you think NEW MOON will open with next weekend? VOTE HERE.

1. 2012 $ 65 Million
NEW
2. A Christmas Carol $ 22.3 Million $ 63.3 Million
3. The Men Who Stare... $ 6.2 Million $ 23.4 Million
4. Precious $ 6.1 Million $ 8.9 Million
5. This Is It $ 5.1 Million $ 68.2 Million
6. The Fourth Kind $ 4.7 Million $ 20.6 Million
7. Couples Retreat $ 4.3 Million $ 102.1 Million
8. Paranormal Activity $ 4.2 Million $ 103.8 Million
9. Law Abiding Citizen $ 3.9 Million $ 67.3 Million
10. The Box $ 3.2 Million $ 13.2 Million

It's actually sad that on a movie fan site like this people are advocating "leaving your brain at the door"... that type of philosophy just sucks and shows no respect for filmmaking.

I wish the movies I loved this year had that kind of Box office (Moon & Hurt Locker in particular)

To most of the below, don't allow Hollywood to have low standards. The 70s proved we could have good disaster movies that also had a good plot and engaging characters. See The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno as examples of this. Poseidon Adventure (original) even had a theme about God's role in the face of such random disaster, so a "dumb" disaster movie can also be a quality film. Hollywood has succeeded since then in lowering your own standards of what passes as entertainment, clearly.

I also think it looks like a refreshing take on the usual inspirational story, it's from John Lee Hancock who also made 2002s THE ROOKIE and 2004s THE ALAMO.

I love how it is in less theaters than Boondock Saints 2, but it has made more than double Boondock's 3 week take in one weekend.

Of course, 2012 is preposterous, but at least, if you compare it to Transformers, in 2012 you get to see whats going on, and get to contemplate the CGI. The first hour alone was worth the price of admission, so over-the-type, yet I couldnt stop laughing cause it was goddamn exciting and I didnt expect it. And it felt like Emmerich knew he was over-doing it and thought: "Meh! What the heck not?"
Its an average movie, but it'll become a guilty pleasure of mine for sure.
