Wild Things dying? Feb. 21, 2008

Source: CHUD

We had heard little to nothing about WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE until that clip surfaced online a little while ago but now CHUD are reporting that the film is on the verge of dying. Apparently Warner Bros and Legendary are considering whether or not to re-shoot the entire film. "Suits at Legendary and Warner Bros are not happy with Max Records, the actor playing Max, the mischievous boy who is crowned King of the Wild Things. Worse than that, they don't like the film's tone and want to go back to the script drawing board, possibly losing the Spike Jonze/Dave Eggers script when they do it. Apparently the film is too weird and 'too scary,' and the character of Max is being seen as not likable". Spike Jonze reportedly has final cut on this thing so he can't be forced to redo everything, but either way firing him and bringing on an entirely new team is possible and not out of the question either. In fact, it isn't even without precedent, given EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING. I can understand that the suits might be worried about having spent $75 million on a quirky art-house flick, but Jesus, don't bring Spike Jonze on if you want a paint-by-numbers kids movie. When you hire that dude you know you're getting some shit that's gonna be out there. Personally, even though the footage we saw was way, way early, I thought it looked brilliant. How do you guys feel about this?

Thank God he has final cut and the cache of a couple of Oscar nominated movies. Of course its going to be idiosyncratic, but the story is weird, and Eggers and Jonze don't make carbon copy product. Kids' tolerability for scarieness is so underrated too. I remember half the shit I watched as a kid being frightening as hell. The more you create a fantasy world that kids can relate to (ie Wild Things), the more they get into it. Kids like being scared just like adults do. Obviously adults usually require blood and violence and terror and stuff, but theres no reason that they couldn't release whatever Jonze puts together. If they market this right, it'll appeal to older children AND adults. Cut two trailer, one for the kids, one "from the director of Adaptation andn Being John Malkovic," and put them infront of different movies. Secure a PG rating, and you're good to go.

I kinda not seeing how this whole thing is possible, because the studio would have had to see the script prior to shooting, not to mention the dailies Spike was shooting. Seems odd that now the studio is objecting this late in the game, but stranger things have happened...And have the suits read the friggin' book?! Of course it's gonna be a little out there. I think they're too used to releasing crap that they wouldn't know if a good film bit them in the ass and shagged their wives...

I have a feeling that the Jonze version would be nothing short of classic. The best kids' movies are slyly subversive, truth be told, anything dealing with a kid's imagination is bound to be frightening.

...but I figure whatever Jonze has/had in mind can't be THAT bad. I mean, Maurice Sendak's book is an absolute classic, and doing it justice will be a difficult task for any director. But Jonze won me over with "Being John Malkovich," so anything the man does (that's not "Jackass") is gold (or at least copper) in my mind. Unless he were to absolutely fuck up Sendak's story. Having said that, I'll bet my bank account he knows better how to bring this thing to life than the people who sign his paycheck.

Films are for audiences. Film makers make films. People watch films. When can we tell the second-guessers and cowards who clutch at the purse-strings to fuck off and stop screwing with our art?

I've been super excited for this (as a lot of you are, I'm sure, and why don't the fans have a say? After all, us adults will probably be a large chunk of the profit either way, since most of us have grown up with the book. I wish they would hear us out, there's a deeper meaning to the book than 'dark' and 'scary', and kids definitely pick up on those underlying themes in kids movies than a lot of adults do.

Please, Warner/Legendary. PLEASE HEAR US OUT.

Obviously no one had Warner Bros. had ever read the original story.

Can you imagine a Spike Jonze movie of this caliber sitting of a shelf collecting dust? To re-shoot with another director would be a most retarded decision. [link]
