Zack and Miri banned? Oct. 16, 2008

Source: AP

If they want to call the movie ZACK AND MIRI that's fine, but Zack and Miri cannot make a porno on my bus shelters.

That's a quote from Philadelphia deputy mayor of transportation Rina Cutler who has banned advertisements from ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO at city bus shelters and public billboards. Kevin Smith's film, which was famously sold to The Weinstein Co. on a six-word pitch, is getting into hot water over one of those words: porno. The Associated Press is reporting that "15 newspapers and several TV stations and cable channels" have refused to run advertisements for the film in addition to bans by Philly and Boston. One Boston-based professor said that the ads "send a message to children that working in the porn industry is an acceptable occupation." A rep for the Weinstein Co. said that to get around the newspapers that have refused advertisements they might come up with some creative versions of ads that block that word "porno." This is of course after the MPAA banned the original poster for the film that hinted that Zack and Miri were going down on each other. As you might expect, somewhere Harvey Weinstein is sitting in his office and eating this controversy up like cake.

Extra Tidbit: How do children even know what a "porno" is?

I was talking about explaining porn to my kid....Porno doesn't just degarde women, it degrades men. However, it does so with a wink to everyone involved. You cannot take porn seriously, can you? If any of these stars' motives was to target woman the way you say they do, I am sure they would get out of the business. These people like to have sex - why not get paid to do what you love.

pornography in and of itself does not depict women in a bad light. Does it ever? of course, but it also depicts men as nothing but walking penises. But so what? It's porn. Sometimes there is very tasteful and beautiful nudes, sometimes there is a chick getting brutally raped. Now, you could make an argument that the former might be okay, and the latter is not, and I might agree with you*, but pictures (moving or otherwise) of people (of whatever gender) fucking is not bad. There is nothing inherently demeaning about filming sex. It can be sometimes, but it isn't always.

Plus, don't you think that porn stars LIKE what they do? If they want to demean themselves, how is that any of your business?

*but probably not

My kid? What are talking about? Did you even read my post? I made no mention of either children or parents. Like you, I also hate it when parents blame a media outlet for something when it is their responsibility to protect their children. I DESPISE it, in fact! NOTHING in my post had anything to do with that. Also remember that I myself said that I thought the censorship was wrong. What I was mainly responding to were the schmoes saying pornography is just "providing a service" (according to Powerslave) and that there is nothing wrong or illegitimate in pursuing a career in porn. I made that VERY clear in my post. I went on to state that these opinions were, IMO, wrong, because pornography is not simply "providing a service" and being in pornography runs deeper than just "having sex for money". To believe that is to never look past the surface. Every form of media has an ultimate intent and purpose beyond just making money, whether those involved in it realize it or not. You cannot tell me with a straight face that pornography does not depict women in a deceptive, inaccurate fashion. You also cannot tell me that pornography supports treating women with dignity and respect.

To end this post, let me leave you with an infamous quote from Larry Flynt to think about:

"Women are here to serve men. Look at them. They've got to squat to piss. Hell, that proves it!"
-Larry Flynt, Founder/Owner/CEO of the Hustler Corporation (I can get you sources for that quote if you need them)

Sex - defined as the activity of life concerned with sexual desire desire or reproduction, any act affording sexual gratification.
So 'Sex Drive' and 'Sex & the City' both fit those definitions. Yet there would be no porno if it weren't for sex. I wonder if it would be different if the title used 'Pornography' instead of 'Porno.'
You are blowing this way out man. Let parents be parents. This is just another piece of media to blame for their lack ability. I have a daughter and when she is old enough to ask me a question of this nature (she is only 2) I will be a grown up and explain it to her. Pornography has been around as long, if not longer than movies. Suppose this was a documentary, no one would care. Remember the doc. called F*CK.....Exactly nobody made a big deal about that title. Just because your kid may see this doesn't make it wrong. Get over it.

It's a movie and it's not real. So what's the question? The word porno which is posted several millions of millions of times on the internet which children have more access too than anything else these days. If kids want to know what porno is, they'll find out and if adults don't know what it is, they're liars. This isn't an MPAA censorship, this is about a mayor plying for a another term. Who cares? Let's protect our children from other things, things that can phyiscally and mentally damage them, not words. Sex goes with porno so don't think there's a difference between the two. Porno involves sex, face it and deal with it.

IGNORANT SCHMOES HERE!

First off, quit complaining about censorship because you know it amounts to more money at the box office!

Second, the word sex (including Sex in the City and Sexdrive) is not the same as the word porno. I am not saying it is right to censor either of these words, since I am anti-censorship myself, but to think porn is the same as sex is INCREDIBLY stupid. Sex is a very broad word that can refer to men and women in general, marital sex, or a freaking orgy! Porno, on the other hand, is a much more specific word that refers to an industry where people have sex on camera for money. Clearly there are very few schmoes here who have taken a course in semantics!

To the people who have claimed that there is nothing wrong with pornography and that it is a legitimate profession are not only wrong, but disgustingly so. Pornography preaches a message about women. There are not to be loved and cherished as wonderfully unique, individual human beings. Rather, they are objects of lust to be used for the pleasure of men (Linda Lovelace herself testified to this). Also, pornography has an addictive quality, and it is one of the most common addictions in this country (the US). It is an addiction that destroys countless relationships and marriages every year. Pornographers know this, and have crafted a pornographic rhetoric that constantly refers to male orgasm, because they know that climaxing while watching porn creates a mind-body connection to the pornography, and becomes somewhat like a drug addiction. They need the pornography to receive that chemical high. Why do you think there are such extreme forms of pornography out there? It is primarily for those who have become desensitized and require pornography more and more extreme to receive that same chemical high. I do not have time to post it here, but I can (and have) applied deconstructive and feminist criticsm to create a very compelling argument against pornography.

As for this particular news, I already stated I hate censorship, so I am displeased to hear this news.

And Kevin Smith is SOB. To show only Katie Morgan's breasts after this funny girl showed EVERYTHING on HBO shows (let's forget about porn she made) is the act of cowardice! Of course, it's based on Mr.Skin's description. That atrocity does not make you angry but ads do? Shame on all of you!

Yeah, this is fucking stupid.

And as posted below, it's also rather offensive to those working in the porn industry. I see nothing so morally repugnant about doing porn. The porn industry provides a service that many, many people appreciate, which is why it's a multi-million dollar industry.

And from what I understand, the movie isn't about the porn industry, but about a couple of broke losers making a porno on their own, in order to make some money so they don't get evicted. So the connection to the porn industry is pretty thin, it seems. I was 7 years old at the time, but I don't think there was any major controversy about Boogie Nights making kids think the porn industry is super great, and that clearly has far more to do with the actual porn industry than this movie. I don't really want to go into the same old spiel about censorship, the job of parents rather than the government, the crazily unbalanced amount of censorship applied to sex as opposed to violence, because we've all heard/said it before, but it all applies.

But to keep more strictly on topic, I realize the controversy is concerning the title and not the content. But seriously, didn't they already change the poster because they thought it was offensive? Now they want to change the fucking title? What are they afraid of? It's not as if kids exposed to the word 'porno' will invariably end up giving blowjobs on camera at 18, regardless of what age they were exposed to the dreaded word.

I don't know, I'm out of opinions right now, but damn is this ridiculous. Well, at least the upside of the overexposure and instant gratification the internet provides the current generation is that the effectiveness of the backwards-retarded censorship policies that are always trying to be implemented by someone or other is all but nonexistent.

Oh well. At least we'll get to see the movie, regardless of whether or not we can see the poster on Philadelphia's precious bus shelters.

I agree with everybody else on this board, why can "Sex and The City" get so much advertisement for its movie, but "Zack and Miri Make A Porno" can't. Our society really needs to grow the hell up already. They're acting like this is the end of the world.
