Zack And Miri NC-17 Jul. 24, 2008

Ladies and gentlemen, the MPAA does it again. Kevin Smith's latest ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO has received the ratings kiss of death. NC-17. The reason? "Some graphic sexuality." So let me get this straight. In the last year onscreen I have seen women raped, heads blown to bits, limbs removed from bodies and Ryan Reynolds attempt to act. Yet somehow, a low-budget comedy that I will assume deals with sex comically and realistically is forbidden to those with an untrained eye. Now the overwhleming task lies on the shoulders of one Kevin Smith to chop this film all the way to an R rating and make it commercially viable. Goddamn I love Hollywood.

Extra Tidbit: GRINDHOUSE was orginally rated NC-17 but was chopped up to obtain an R rating. We all know how that turned out.

Please stop making news stories a soap-box for your opinions on movies/actors...we don't care what you think about them, but we do care when it's brought up for no other apparent reason than to get people angry.

Hey hey hey, I like Ryan Reynolds!

I think it is a bit ridiculous that this is getting an NC-17, when these dime-a-dozen horror movies can have graphic violence, nudity, and much more, and they gets R's. I mean you can even have mass violence in PG-13 movie now-a-days. I just think the MPAA as a whole is pretty bogus.

The MPAA, ever since I can remember, has always been much more strict when rating low budget and/or independent films, but much more lenient on big budget studio films that need a certain rating to make their money back.

Basically, if the MPAA applied the same standards to EVERY film, could not be bought, and if all theaters would show movies of any rating (other than porn), there would be far less reason to complain about the MPAA.

I heard Grindhouse didn't have problems, which surprised the hell out of the filmmakers. Then again, maybe they pre-emptively cut the film.

Personally, I think since Smith is not stranger to the MPAA, and this thing is a comedy about porn, they oughta just keep the NC-17(or unrated) and make a huge viral campaign so people still turn out to see it.

And this coming from a guy living in the so-called Bible Belt.

this isn't like it's the first time smith has had to cut a film down from an nc-17... if i'm correct, the only film to get by on first review with an R was clerks 2 (other than jersey girl, of course). if i'm wrong... eh, there are worse things to be wrong about.

i'm sure that, regardless of the cuts, smith's legion of internet sycophants will love every frame that remains intact in theaters, regardless of the actual quality of the film. and c'mon, it's not like he's going to forgo for the self-indulgent unrated 2-disc director's cut blah blah blah DVD set he does for every one of his movies. hopefully this one has the "scott mosier brushes his teeth!" special feature - i've been waiting with baited breath for that one, let me tell you!

by the way, are you proposing that "grindhouse" failed because it had to have cuts made and, therefore, WASN'T longer? i thought the 3 hour running time was the primary deterrent for people going to see it... other than it having an extremely niche audience, of course. still, what a blast of a film!

Yeah it matters DarkElfa because theatre chains won't carry films with an NC-17 rating so essentially this is the death knell for the film. 12 minutes of cuts is one hell of a lot.

I'm pretty sure the MPAA just hates Kevin Smith. He claimed that Clerks was originally rated NC-17, and, without cutting anything, all it took to get it to an R was a phone call from Harvey Weinstein. Ever since then, the MPAA have been total assholes, giving Smith no leeway at all and being strict as shit.

If Hollywood wants to submit to a ratings system, they should at least have a board that monitors the group's ratings. They are unchecked and have an alarming amount of power without having to be held accountable for it's misuse.

I'd much rather see a full on gang bang than a child being raped and murdered.

I think that's a tad more offensive.
